The Couven Museum is situated in the heart of Aachen on the site of Charlemagne's imperial palace. Complete interiors dating back to the 18th and early 19th centuries are presented in a baroque building that houses the former Adler Apotheke, as well as a ceremonial hall, various parlours, intimate rooms and a kitchen that portrays the servants' activities. Apart from furniture, the exhibits include paintings and painted wall coverings, stoves, fireplaces and matching accessories, grandfather and pendulum clocks, chandeliers and candle sticks, windows and doors, as well as porcelain vessels exhibited in glazed dressers. Originally, all these exquisite works used to demonstrate the social status of the well-to-do citizens that acquired them.Eighteenth-century Aachen furniture is made of oak and solely decorated with carvings. The museum also presents two dressers from neighbouring Liège, thus making comparison possible and underscoring the particularities of Aachen furniture.

Im Herzen Aachens auf dem Areal der Kaiserpfalz Karls des Großen liegt das Couven-Museum. In einem barocken Wohn- und Geschäftshaus mit der alten Adler-Apotheke, wird Wohnkultur des 18. und des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts im Zusammenhang vollständiger Interieurs präsentiert. Es gibt einen Festsaal, diverse Salons und intimere Räume, eine Apotheke nimmt auf die Geschichte des Hauses Bezug, die Küche zeigt das Reich der Dienerschaft. Außer Möbeln gehören gemalte Wandbespannungen und Gemälde, Öfen und Kamine nebst Zubehör, Standuhren und Pendulen, Leuchter und Lüster, Fenster und Türen zu den Exponaten. Nicht zu vergessen die in den Vitrinenschränken präsentierten Porzellane. Die ausgestellten Werke hatten schon zur Zeit ihrer Herstellung repräsentativen Charakter: wohlhabende Bürger präsentierten ihren Reichtum. Aachener Möbel des 18. Jahrhunderts sind aus Eichenholz gefertigt und nur durch Schnitzerei plastisch dekoriert. Das Museum lässt sie in ihrer Eigenheit erleben und bietet zwei Vitrinenschränke aus dem benachbarten Lüttich zum Vergleich.

Dr. Rudolf Kircher (1885-1954) war von 1912 bis 1943 Redakteur der "Frankfurter Zeitung," zuletzt als ihr -Hauptschriftleiter-. Das Interesse der Forschung galt bisher seinem Versuch, eine liberale Zeitung auch im -Dritten Reich- zu erhalten. Die Arbeit untersucht die Zeitungsartikel, die Kircher zwischen 1920 und 1923 veroffentlicht hat, und stellt bisher unveroffentlichte Materialien zu Kirchers Biographie aus Archiven in Berlin, Dortmund, Karlsruhe, London, Marbach und Rom vor. Nach Kirchers Verstandnis war Politik der unermudliche Versuch, Handlungsmoglichkeiten aufzuspuren. In der englischen Demokratie sah er die grosse Aufgabe vorbildlich gelost, die Menschenmassen der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert in den vom Burgertum gepragten Staat zu integrieren."

This volume C 1 is the first supplement volume to "Phosphor" C which was published in 1965 and covers the compounds of phosphorus. Starting with the binary species formed between phosphorus and hydrogen, the present volume deals with the neutral mononuclear compounds PH through PH ; the ions featuring the same stoichiometric composition are s covered in separate sections. PH and PH are the major initial gaseous decomposition products of PH and, thus, also 2 J intermediates in many of its gas-phase reactions. Both molecules and their ions have been thoroughly investigated by a variety of modern, high-resolution spectroscopic methods during the last three decades. The coverage of their physical, and mostly molecular, properties re­ presents the largest part of the first two chapters (PH and ions pp. 2 to 47; PH and ions pp. 47 2 to 111). PH is the only compound described in this volume which is thermally stable under normal J conditions. It is the phosphorus analog of ammonia, but exhibits, however, a quite different chemical behavior towards most elements and compounds. The majority of its physical, and in particular spectroscopic, properties have been determined in great detail since the sixties, partially in regard to spectroscopic investigations of the atmospheres of the outer planets.

Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original Iiterature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com­ pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Valurne 7 contains Iiterature published in 1972 and received before August 15, 1972; some older Iiter­ ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.
