Jewish Foreign Trade Officials on Trial

Jewish Foreign Trade Officials on Trial

Veronica Rozenberg; Arthur House

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC

sidottu
This book deals with six trials, conducted by the Romanian state against Jewish key officials employed in state-owned import-export companies between 1950 and 1960. It begins with a presentation of the political realities of Romania following the Communist Party's rise to power, in particular those regarding its relationship with Romania's Jews and Gheorghiu-Dej’s policy of National Communism. Rozenberg describes the criminal procedure used in the staged economic trials follows and then examines this procedure based on the legal system of the period, as exemplified by the six analyzed trials. The Românoexport Jewish officials' trial is analyzed in depth, as the case study of the whole book. This book concludes by bringing to light two phenomena that dissipate some mystique surrounding the events: first, the state's practice of using its legal system as a means of oppressing the population; and second, the stereotypical image of "The Jew" which the regime in Romania developed. Despite its supposed anti-religiosity, it held on to centuries-old prejudices against Jews as pariahs, with supposed allegiance to foreign elements preferred over their surrounding society, even to the point of betraying and exploiting their own country.

Blue House: Ten Years on the Way Home tells the struggles, traumas and tragedies of a family in the former USSR during Stalin's reign, pre-WWII. Dispossessed of the happy home and wealth they built through their own sweat and labor, they were forced to withstand horrors and hardships as their daily bread...when there was any bread. Their arms were their pillows; their consciences were their best friends. Silent soul-pain and physical pain did not dim their faith, for their spirits, minds and love endured. "Educate your spirit and mind to be strong. Walk firmly and confidently," states first-time author Veronica Braila. "Believe in better times, no matter what." And Braila's blue house became the haven of hope that held this family's hearts.About the Author: Veronica Braila is an entrepreneur and a devoted mom. She lives just outside of Chicago and is originally from a small country called Pridnestrovia. She enjoys reading and spending time exchanging stories with others about life and faith. Veronica hopes Blue House: Ten Years on the Way Home helps others to believe in love, have faith, and forever be in touch with God throughout the journey called life. "It doesn't matter what is going on now," Veronica says. "Trust the path you're on because it will lead to the right place."

This book uses the V4 countries as an ideal political environment for testing shifts in Euroscepticism and illiberalism in the dynamic context of the “politicising moments” of multiple crises. It analyses what kind of Euroscepticism prevailed in East-Central Europe during the COVID-19 and Ukrainian war crises and how it changed compared to its manifestation during the earlier Eurozone and migration crises. With this, it looks at how, and under what circumstances, Eurosceptic narratives were linked to illiberal ones. The authors reveal that Euroscepticism and illiberalism are more than pure coincidence and highlight the conceptual connections between them showing how Euroscepticism and illiberalism cross-fertilise and reinforce each other. This book is of key interest to scholars and students of Euroscepticism, Central-Eastern European, party politics, illiberalism, politics in the period of crises and more broadly to European and EU studies, comparative politics and area studies.

On a snowy night in February, at the improbable point in Lower Manhattan where Waverly Place intersects Waverly Place, a photographer named Leo meets Veronica for the first time. Starkly beautiful, mysterious, aloof, she leads him into a world where illusion blends seamlessly with reality--a luminously transformed city where powerful underground streams crisscross beneath the streets, a city of dragonpoints and Tibetan mysticism where real time is magically altered. Ten years have passed since Veronica's father, the famous magician Albin White, disappeared while performing a dangerous feat of time travel before a packed theater audience. White's disappearance was no accident: he was sabotaged by his apprentice Starwood, who interfered at a critical moment and sent him hurtling into the past, free to explore other eras but with no means of returning to the present. Until Veronica finds Leo...

A NEW YORK TIMES TOP 100 BOOK OF THE 21ST CENTURY Alison and Veronica meet amid the nocturnal glamour of 1980s New York: one is a former modelling sensation, stumbling away from the wreck of her career, the other an eccentric middle-aged proofreader with a meticulous eye. Over the next twenty years their friendship will encompass narcissism and tenderness, exploitation and self-sacrifice, love and mortality. Moving seamlessly between the glamorous and gritty '80s, when beauty and style gave licence to excess, and the broken world of the decade's survivors twenty years later, Gaitskill casts a fierce yet compassionate eye on the two eras and their fixations. Veronica masterfully evokes the fragility and mystery of human relationships in a world where love is rife with frightening artificiality. Evocative, raw and entirely unique, Veronica was shortlisted for the prestigious 2005 National Book Award in the USA.
