Waverley is an 1814 historical novel by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Published anonymously in 1814 as Scott's first venture into prose fiction, it is often regarded as the first historical novel in the western tradition. It became so popular that Scott's later novels were advertised as being "by the author of Waverley". His series of works on similar themes written during the same period have become collectively known as the "Waverley Novels".

Edward Waverley stammt aus englischem Adel. W hrend sein Vater in London eine politische Karriere als Parteig nger der Whigs macht, damals die Unterst tzer der Monarchen aus dem Haus Hannover, wird Waverley von seinem Onkel aufgezogen, der ihm die alten jakobitischen Werte vermittelt, also die der Anh nger des Hauses Stuart. Auf Wunsch seines Vaters beginnt Edward eine Laufbahn als Offizier beim britischen Milit r. Wegen eines Missverst ndnisses und wegen falscher Anschuldigungen kann er von einem Urlaub in den schottischen Highlands nicht zur ckkehren und schlie t sich dem zu dieser Zeit (1745) in Schottland ausbrechenden zweiten Jakobitenaufstand an der Seite von Charles Edward Stuart an, der den britischen Thron mit Unterst tzung insbesondere aus den schottischen Highlands von der 1714 durch den Hannoveraner Georg I. begr ndeten britischen Dynastie f r die Stuarts zur ckerobern m chte. Walter Scott (1771-1832) war ein schottischer Dichter und Schriftsteller.
