William L. Wright (1868–1942) was born to be a Texas Ranger, and hard work made him a great one. Wright tried working as a cowboy and farmer, but it did not suit him. Instead, he became a deputy sheriff and then a Ranger in 1899, battling a mob in the Laredo Smallpox Riot, policing both sides in the Reese-Townsend Feud, and winning a gunfight at Cotulla. His need for a better salary led him to leave the Rangers and become a sheriff. He stayed in that office longer than any of his predecessors in Wilson County, keeping the peace during the so-called Bandit Wars, investigating numerous violent crimes, and surviving being stabbed on the gallows by the man he was hanging. When demands for Ranger reform peaked, he was appointed as a captain and served for most of the next twenty years, retiring in 1939 after commanding dozens of Rangers.Wright emerged unscathed from the Canales investigation, enforced Prohibition in South Texas, and policed oil towns in West Texas, as well as tackling many other legal problems. When he retired, he was the only Ranger in service who had worked under seven governors. Wright has also been honored as an inductee into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame at Waco.

The Victor And The Spoils: A Life Of William L. Marcy is a comprehensive biography of the American politician William L. Marcy, written by Ivor Debenham Spencer. Marcy was a prominent figure in American politics during the 19th century, serving as a United States Senator, Governor of New York, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State. The book provides a detailed account of Marcy's life, from his early years in rural Massachusetts to his rise to political power in New York and Washington, D.C. Spencer explores Marcy's political philosophy, which was based on the principle of ""spoils"" - the belief that political power should be used to reward one's supporters and allies. The book also delves into Marcy's personal life, including his marriage to Cornelia Knower and his relationships with other prominent figures of the time, such as Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. Throughout the book, Spencer provides a nuanced and balanced portrait of Marcy, highlighting both his successes and his failures. The Victor And The Spoils is a must-read for anyone interested in American political history and the development of the American political system. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

The following pages contain the life of an eminent citizen of the republic. The compiler's object has been to present him, as he moved along, from point to point, in his own thoughts and actions. Most of General Cass's time has been passed in public occupation; and, hence, the propriety of bringing out this work during his life-time. It is believed that no topic of public concernment, for fifty years past, has been introduced, upon which General Cass has not expressed his views. In most instances, official position required him to do so. Readers may differ as to the value of these views; but all wall concede that his history would be imperfect without them. To do justice to him, the compiler, in some instances, has presented his entire argument - especially upon the British claim to the right of visitation and search.
