Amphibians of East Africa

Amphibians of East Africa

Alan Channing; Kim M. Howell

Published in Cooperation with the Wildlife Conservation Society"East Africa is well known for its wealth of plants and animals, represented in game reserves, such as the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Maasai-Mara in Kenya, and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Nature Reserve in Uganda. These reserves and others like them have been the localities of wildlife television documentaries that cover the well-known large mammal predators, the crocodiles, the herds of migrating buffalo, and, of course, the gorillas. Less well known, but playing an important role in the East African ecosystems, are the amphibians. The ancestors of the present-day frogs and caecilians were in attendance before the rift valley started to form, and long before the first true mammals shook off the last vestiges of their reptilian ancestry."--from the IntroductionIn the first field guide and reference book about the amphibians of East Africa, Alan Channing and Kim M. Howell provide identification keys and detailed accounts for 194 frog species and 9 caecilians. These descriptions will be of great interest to all herpetological enthusiasts, travelers to the region, and conservation biologists who track the health of amphibian populations. Amphibians of East Africa is exhaustively illustrated with 185 color images on 24 plates, 24 halftones, 74 line drawings, 202 maps, and 1 table. The species accounts are comprehensive--they include a statement of description, known habitat preferences and distribution, advertisement call, and breeding biology. If known, the characteristics of tadpoles are provided in their own chapter. The authors explain the meanings of the amphibians-- scientific names and list local names and other common names. A section of notes and a guide to key references for further reading complete each species account. The frogs found in this volume include representatives from 8 families: squeakers (Arthroleptidae), toads (Bufonidae), snout-burrowers (Hemisotidae), tree frogs (Hyperoliidae), narrow-mouthed frogs (Microhylidae), clawed frogs (Pipidae), common frogs (Ranidae), and foam-nest frogs (Rhacophoridae). The East African caecilians are from the families Caeciliidae and Scolecomorphidae
Housing, the State and the Poor

Housing, the State and the Poor

Gilbert Alan; Ward Peter M.

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
Originally published in 1985, this book is concerned with the housing and service needs of the poor in Latin America and how they are articulated and satisfied. It examines the aims and implementation of government policies towards low-income housing dwellers and tries to relate those policies to the wider interests of the state. It discusses how the poor perceive the constraints on barrio servicing and improvement, their involvement in community organisations and the role the community and its leaders play in influencing state action. Since housing and servicing issues directly impinge on the interests of politicians, bureaucrats, landowners and real-estate developers, as well as on those of the poor, patterns of provision mirror closely the nature of the relationships between the poor and the wider urban society. The main theme of this book is thus the allocation of resources within urban society and the operation of political and administrative power at city level. The book will interest not only those concerned with housing and planning but also those who wish to understand social and economic policies towards the poor in most kinds of Third World city.

In Teaching Matters Most, Thomas McCann, Alan C. Jones, and Gail Aronoff make the case that the single most important factor in continuous school improvement is the quality of instruction in schools. Unlike other books that stop at evaluating teachers and instruction, these authors argue that school leaders must work to grow the instructional capacities within their schools. To meet this goal, they offer school leaders a three-step process that involves:(1) envisioning what good teaching looks like (2) measuring the quality of current instruction against this standard, and (3) working relentlessly to move the quality of instruction closer and closer to the ideal.

We have a new star on the literary horizon. M. Alan Jacobs' first book is a world-changing meteor of a story; fast, furious and brilliant. Unraveling Jacob's fantastic and highly dangerous mysteries is H.I. Tech, a 16-year old genius plucked from surburbia and dropped into one of the most frightening scenarios mankind may one day face... This is as good as it gets and Jacobs is just getting started. -Terry Moore (Strangers In Paradise, Echo) It's July 1999. Yale astronomer Raymond Marsden's discovery, RM 1999, is closing on earth, and Marsden thinks its impact will spell the end of the world. But instead of destroying the earth, RM 1999 survives its impact deep in the Amazon basin. All life around it dies, and RM 199 lies waiting in a massive crater of its own making, hidden from sight by conditions that seem to defy the laws of physics. Reclassified Object Alpha Bell Tower, RM 1999 is quarantined by special forces and probed by the best minds. But soon contact with their remote site is lost, Raymond Marsden vanishes, and events snowball toward Hippocrates Isaac Tech, a 16 year old outcast and reluctant prodigy. H.I. Tech may be an outcast, but he is not alone. If he were, he might have a shot at the ordinary life he desperately wants. He might even have a chance with April Waterston, who hates his guts. But this life is not to be. H.I.'s father is Dr. Jules Verne Tech, "Doc" to H.I. and "scientifi c trouble-shooter" to his bosses in the Pentagon. Doc never says no and never goes on a job without H.I. But before Doc's mission to the Amazon can begin, kidnappers target April. It seems she and H.I. share more in common that she can stand. Her mother, Dr. Kay Watersone, was in charge at the Bell Tower site. So now H.I.'s mission is personal. Save April. But it's not so easy, because she still hates his guts, and Doc's CIA escorts may be playing a double game. What awaits them all is a human horror beyond their worst fears and a powerful presence that is not of this world. H.I. TECH is the first book in a trilogy. It's an electrifying thriller with the scientific know-how of Michael Crichton, the military technology of Tom Clancy, and the spy stuff of Ian Fleming. H.I. TECH pushes the action and attitude to eleven, careening toward global catastrophe with pulse-pounding glee. The second book in this trilogy, Doc's Rules, is now available on Amazon.

Fulfilling a wish to live in a remote location and the great luck of finding Morgan Spring was a dream come true. The author and Linda, his childhood sweetheart, quickly realized Morgan Spring was a perfect place for retirement and an extended honeymoon. Morgan Spring opened its pages to teach about the day-to-day living where mail came three days per week and where the water was beyond quenching. Their little spot, surrounded by a meadow often filled with elk and a forest with breezes singing through the needles of evergreen trees, offered habitat for wildlife precious to dangerous, from mushrooms to birds, wildflowers to backyard skunks. Thinking of birds invited forays into how some birds acquired their names and occasional swoops into bird business such as catching flies. Morgan Spring is witness to a rich geological history beginning in the shadow of Mount Mazama of the Cascade Mountains. The richness of human history ranges from bad to good and entertaining. The health of the ecology of Morgan Spring country is also varied, but its outcome hopeful. We rarely saw neighbors. When we did, it was a delight knowing that they also loved Morgan Spring.

Research into pain has grown exponentially over the past few years, and our understanding of mechanism and pharmacology has also developed. Trigeminal neuralgia often goes unrecognized or is mistaken for other causes of facial pain, and while the cause often cannot be determined, it can be associated with multiple sclerosis, herpes zoster, and various tumors. With newer medications and advances in surgical techniques, patients with trigeminal neuralgia now have more treatment options than ever before, and it is important that clinicians are aware of these in order to improve their care.Clinical Manual of Trigeminal Neuralgia familiarizes clinicians with the diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia and describe the range of current treatments available. Key areas covered include diagnostic procedures, medical and surgical management—including gamma knife surgery—and guidelines on non-pharmacologic therapy.Written by a team from one of the leading centers for the study of neurologic head and neck pain, this book is a highly practical reference for the clinician dealing with common and difficult-to-manage problems in this area.

50 Studies Every Ophthalmologist Should Know presents key studies that have shaped the practice of ophthalmology. Selected using a rigorous methodology, emphasis has been placed on landmark studies which have influenced current ophthalmology practice guidelines. For each study, a concise summary is presented with an emphasis on the results and limitations of the study, and its implications for practice. An illustrative clinical case concludes each review, followed by brief information on other relevant studies. This book is a must-read for ophthalmologists, especially those in training or preparing for board review, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about the data behind clinical practice.
What Price Civil Justice?

What Price Civil Justice?

In Britain the costs of justice - to taxpayers and litigants - have been rising faster than GDP. For efficiency reasons and to encourage innovation, reform is required and some action is already underway. But reform is complicated because 'justice' is a complex product - bought on 'trust' by many consumers and with precedent and spillover effects. Some good ideas for reform are already in circulation. But there is a case for experimentation rather than trying to work out in advance which ideas should be implemented. Market forces should have a bigger role in the civil justice system and there should be more competition in the provision of dispute resolution services. Probable features of a reformed judicial system would be competitive tendering, better information for clients about alternative ways of proceeding and more power for trial judges to control the passage of a case. The supply of judges also needs to be addressed: court fees could be determined by market forces and the proceeds ploughed back into judicial capacity. Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures allow parties a choice of jurisdictions. ADR produces precedents, to the extent they are required, and does not need the threat of litigation in the background. A big advantage of ADR is that it avoids monopolized law which otherwise tends to produce inflexibility, bad rules and politicization.

The Déjà vu Experience, Second Edition covers the latest scientific discoveries regarding the strange sense of familiarity most of us have felt at one time or another when doing something for the first time. The book sheds light on this mysterious phenomenon, considering the latest neurophysiological investigations and research on possible reasons why déjà vu is often associated with a sense of predicting the future or knowing what happens next.In addition to summarizing the major historical and contemporary theoretical approaches to the déjà vu experience, this book aspires to stimulate additional research on this curious subjective phenomenon. Drawing on research from a range of fields including psychology, philosophy, and religion, it aims to demystify some of the more unsettling, spooky-seeming aspects of the déjà vu experience, elucidating possible mechanisms and underlying reasons for its occurrence. This edition has been thoroughly updated throughout to include over 200 new professional articles and book chapters related to déjà vu that have been published in the 18 years since the original book.By placing the scientific study of déjà vu within its historical context and covering a broad range of perspectives on the subject, this title will be invaluable to upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers of Cognitive Psychology, specifically those focusing on Memory Phenomena.

Why would anyone bid $3. 25 in an auction where the prize is a single dollar bill? Can one “game” explain the apparent irrationality behind both the arms race of the 1980s and the libretto of Puccini’s opera Tosca? How can one calculation suggest the president has 4 percent of the power in the United States federal system while another s- gests that he or she controls 77 percent? Is democracy (in the sense of re?ecting the will of the people) impossible? Questionslikethesequitesurprisinglyprovideaveryniceforumfor some fundamental mathematical activities: symbolic representation and manipulation, model–theoretic analysis, quantitative represen- tionandcalculation, anddeductionasembodiedinthepresentationof mathematical proof as convincing argument. We believe that an ex- sure to aspects of mathematics such as these should be an integral part of a liberal arts education. Our hope is that this book will serve as a text for freshman-sophomore level courses, aimed primarily at students in the humanities and social sciences, that will provide this sort of exposure. A number of colleges and universities already have interdisciplinary freshman seminars where this could take place. Most mathematics texts for nonscience majors try to show that mathematics can be applied to many different disciplines. A student’s viii PREFACE interest in a particular application, however, often depends on his or hergeneralinterestintheareainwhichtheapplicationistakingplace. Our experience at Union College and Williams College has been that there is a real advantage in having students enter the course knowing that virtually all the applications will focus on a single discipline—in this case, political science.
