Juli 1805 in Verneuil, Frankreich, geboren. Nach dem Studium der Rechtswissenschaft begab er sich 1831 mit seinem Freund Gustave Auguste de Beaumont de la Bonniniere auf eine Studienreise in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Tocequeville versuchte in seinem Buch " ber die Demokratie in Amerika," welches 1835 erschien, die Zukunft und die Auswirkungen demokratischer Tendenzen in Europa aufzuzeigen, die er anhand von evolution ren beziehungsweise revolution ren Entwicklungen ber mehrere Jahrhunderte glaubte belegen zu k nnen. Er sah diesen Prozess als "Werk Gottes (Tocqueville 1985, ber die Demokratie in Amerika)" an, da er von der politischen Elite zwar ber die Zeit nie gewollt, und doch durch gewisse Automatismen unterst tzt, oder zumindest nicht verhindert wurde (vgl. Tocqueville 1985, S. 21). Er hielt es f r unm glich, sich diesem Prozess zu widersetzen. Sein besonderes Interesse galt den Auswirkungen auf sein Heimatland Frankreich, das er in seinem Buch immer wieder als Referenz und Vergleichsobjekt heranzog. Als Untersuchungsobjekt w hlte er Amerika, das f r Tocqueville das einzige Land der Erde darstellte, indem die Grundlage f r eine dauerhaft funktionierende Demokratie schon gegeben war. In den folgenden Essays, werde ich drei Kapitel aus dem Buch " ber die Demokratie in Amerika" n her beleuchten.
