This research monograph gives a complete discussion of the theory of the discrete-time hyperbolic map. Both scalar and matrix representations are considered. The dynamics of the map are analyzed and discussions of stability, quasiperiodicity, and chaos are included. Several applications are discusssed, the most important being the discrete-time linear time-invariant quadratic regulator. The results obtained from this analysis are then extended to the continuous-time linear regulator. A discussion of the linear quadratic regulator with negative state weighting provides some important insights into the general regulator theory. The results contained in this monograph should be accessible to the first year graduate student or advanced senior undergraduate. Interested readers should also have a background in ODE's, difference equations, optimization theory, and/or digital control theory.

Rudolph Virchow (1821-1902) was a leading figure in the medical, political and intellectual life of Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century. His most famous work was "Cellular Pathology". Virchow wrote many books and edited several journals, including ‘Virchow’s Archive’ and was a member of numerous professional societies. This book is a compilation of Virchow's memorial addresses on nineteen of his teachers –especially Johannes Müller and Johann Lukas Schönlein – colleagues and students as well as one concerning Morgagni. There is an introduction to the man and his times, and copious editors' notes to explain allusions and events mentioned in the text with which some modern readers may be unfamiliar. The author lays out the early Ptolemaic tax system, describes the changes in the capitation taxes during the reign of Ptolemy II, discusses the other state and temple revenues, and then reconstructs the prosopography and provenance of thirty-nine tax payers whose names occur frequently in these initial studies. Having set the stage, the author then provides editions of sixty-one ostraca from Harold Nelson's collection that include an important group of early Ptolemaic Demotic, Greek, and bilingual ostraca, mostly tax receipts. One late Ptolemaic account ostracon (Cat. no. 3) is also published here since it concerns the business of choachytes, who figure prominently in the group of early Ptolemaic ostraca. The book concludes with full indices, and each of the ostraca is illustrated in drawing and photograph.
