Camel's Bastard Son

Camel's Bastard Son

Thicke Vaney Books

In a post-Trump world, Billy Kos, occasional poet, uneasy lover, and pot salesman, meets Kalma Voyles, a student and teacher. Billy believes she is the woman of his dreams, and his dreams are made of the usual surrealism and lust. It's your typical boy-meets-girl, boy-gets-girl, boy-loses-girl, something-goes-horribly-wrong-with-the-time-machine story. Billy's courtship, marriage, and ensuing distress, bring him to the edge of himself. In Memphis, in this near-future, in this country marginally changed, where prejudice and misogyny have returned to daily life, Billy Kos loses more than his heart. He loses his home. He loses his world. Camel's Bastard Son is a Vonnegutian journey into love and the unknown. It's about change and adjustment to change, the kind of change that happens like a seep, and the kind that happens like idiot lightning.
Filippo Sassetti on Trade, Institutions and Empire
The Florentine traveler, merchant, and academician Filippo Sassetti was one of the premier economic thinkers of the late Renaissance. Well known for his ethnographic observations, Sassetti was also a commercial writer of the highest caliber—at once an original thinker and a remarkable witness to how Europeans even at the margins of empire were beginning to reconceptualize power and wealth.Unique among commercial theorists of the period, Sassetti offers a first-hand perspective on commerce in both the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean. This volume translates (for the first time) the Discourse on Mediterranean Trade and a selection of the principal Indian Letters, with extensive historical notes. These are preceded by a lengthy essay positioning Sassetti as a figure in late Renaissance political economy. It makes the case that Sassetti was an early theorist of what might be termed the pragmatic tradition of free trade—in his case, a project linked to his analysis of commercial institutions in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.Provoking an invaluable overview of trade in the Indian Ocean in the late sixteenth century, this volume is an excellent specialist text for postgraduate students and professional historians.

Introduction to Analysis is an ideal text for a one semester course on analysis. The book covers standard material on the real numbers, sequences, continuity, differentiation, and series, and includes an introduction to proof. The author has endeavored to write this book entirely from the student’s perspective: there is enough rigor to challenge even the best students in the class, but also enough explanation and detail to meet the needs of a struggling student. From the Author to the student:"I vividly recall sitting in an Analysis class and asking myself, ‘What is all of this for?’ or ‘I don’t have any idea what’s going on.’ This book is designed to help the student who finds themselves asking the same sorts of questions, but will also challenge the brightest students."Chapter 1 is a basic introduction to logic and proofs.Informal summaries of the idea of proof provided before each result, and before a solution to a practice problem.Every chapter begins with a short summary, followed by a brief abstract of each section. Each section ends with a concise and referenced summary of the material which is designed to give the student a "big picture" idea of each section. There is a brief and non-technical summary of the goals of a proof or solution for each of the results and practice problems in this book, which are clearly marked as "Idea of proof," or as "Methodology", followed by a clearly marked formal proof or solution. Many references to previous definitions and results. A "Troubleshooting Guide" appears at the end of each chapter that answers common questions.

Vegan Witchcraft is the first book to blend theories of animal rights, feminism, and modern witchcraft in pursuit of total liberation.Perhaps the most foundational of all ethics in modern witchcraft is the creed: Do no harm. Despite this, multi-species suffering persists in non-vegan witchcraft. Vegan Witchcraft examines this intriguing conflict, unpacking the role of Nonhuman Animals in modern witchcraft from a vegan feminist perspective to illuminate inequalities that persist in alternative spiritual practices in the West. Recognising Nonhuman Animals as comrades instead of consumables, vegan witchcraft confronts the harm imposed on nature, humans, and other animals and identifies witchery as a powerful conduit for social change that draws its energy from plant-based foods, multispecies solidarity, and feminine power. The book critically analyses popular witchcraft pathways in Britain and America to interrogate the many ways in which Nonhuman Animals are overlooked, objectified, or exploited, highlighting theological inconsistencies and missed opportunities that might be overcome to create a stronger practice for women and their communities. It reimagines witchcraft practice and lore to manifest justice and compassion for fellow humans, Nonhuman Animals, and nature. Veganism is advanced as a magical practice of self-care, community responsibility, conscious consumption, societal transformation, and environmental protection. The book calls for the redirection of the modern witch's path toward a just world and away from the systematic symbolic and material exploitation of Nonhuman Animals that permeates witchcraft today. This book will be essential reading for those interested in critical animal studies, animal rights, ecofeminism, vegan religious studies, environmental philosophy and witchcraft.

This book examines scholastic conceptions of final causality through the methods and concerns of historical theology. It argues the history of final causality is most profitably understood according to the interplay of regularity, order, and intentionality as interpretive categories. Within this analytic framework, the author explores the history and theological implications of final causality from Aristotle to Nicole Oresme, utilizing shifts in the dominant interpretive category to clarify how final causality could change from one of four co-equal explanatory strategies in Aristotle to the cause of causes in Avicenna to a merely metaphorical cause in Walter Chatton. Theological debates – ranging from questions of creation, the relationship of primary and secondary causality and of the ultimate good to secondary goods, the autonomy or instrumentality of nature, and the compatibility of chance with providence – motivated many of these changes. The chapters examine final causality in Aristotle and the commentorial tradition from late antiquity to medieval Arabic sources and then consider in detail various scholastic understandings and uses of final causality. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of historical theology, systematic theology, scholastic thought, and medieval philosophy.
