Danny Lyon: American Blood
Karma

sidottu
A half-century of social change in America, documented in the writings of Danny Lyon, photographer and author of The Bikeriders and The Destruction of Lower Manhattan “From the beginning, even before he left the University of Chicago and headed south to take up a position as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Danny Lyon dreamed of being an artist in language as well as in pictures,” writes Randy Kennedy in the introduction to American Blood. In 1961, at the age of 19, for example, Lyon penned a brutally satirical article for a student mimeo magazine in which he argued for the deterrent power of prime-time televised executions (“the show would open, no doubt, like a baseball game, with a rendition of the National Anthem”). Lyon is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking work in photography and film. Less recognized is the extensive body of writing that has broadened and reinforced his reach, in both the pages of his own publications and in others as varied as the Los Angeles Times, the New York Review of Books, Aperture, civil rights publications, underground magazines and Lyon's blog. This 400-page volume spans republished and previously unpublished texts from nearly six decades of his career, comprising a vast, meticulously archived history of American social change. Also included are conversations between Lyon and Hugh Edwards, Nan Goldin and Susan Meiselas. As Kennedy writes, Lyon’s collected writings, “remarkable as both artistic and moral models, remain far too little known, especially for an author who has seen what he has seen and possesses the rare ability to write about it as he speaks; Lyon is a world-class talker, funny, wise, sanguine and indefatigable.” Danny Lyon (born 1942) is one of the most influential documentary photographers of the last five decades. His many books include The Movement (1964), The Bikeriders, The Destruction of Lower Manhattan (1969), Knave of Hearts (1999), Like a Thief’s Dream (2007) and Deep Sea Diver (2011).

Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a collection of fifty full-color drawings based on my memories of growing up "different". All along the way of development, I was told I was doing it wrong. Like all gay or creative kids, I knew I was different from the others and they knew it too. I wanted to create this book to help illustrate those moments, but also to help the reader remember their own stories. I wasn't the only little boy who put on something fun and tried to entertain their parent's guests, I'm sure of it. If you grew up with a different point of view, this book is for you. Flip the pages and watch Danny grow from birth to eighteen in fifty drawings. Each page a step in personal discovery. When I grew up there was no help for me. There was no one telling me that I was fine just as I am. I needed to make sure that the adult me sent out the word that you are not only fine but beautiful. Be you. It's your life and the people who love you deserve to know you not the person you play. If you have someone in your life who doesn't fit the mold, I hope this book helps you to see it's OK to be different. Enjoy Danny's growing up. I did --Dan Crowley, Author & ArtistPraise for Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative"Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative, shows us what it means to grow up heart-open and human. But few saw us that way when we were kids. So Danny, with his winsome humor-filled drawings, reminds us of those wonder years, as we struggled to find our place under the rainbow. I feel like I am coming home again, but this time, in a happy and healed way. Bravo, Danny Shine on --Christopher Radko, award-winning designer "Dan Crowley explores with humor and empathy all the various childhood pitfalls in growing up gay in a less than fabulous world. Many were right out of my childhood, such as spotting a doll you always wanted in the bedroom of a friend's sister. So much of it hit home." --Mel Odom, Artist "Dan Crowley's book, Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative is a wonderful thing. It speaks to children who may need to know they're not different and that their lives are not a mistake. Youngsters who are curious about their own sexuality before even knowing what that word means. And it speaks in a way their straight parents may be unable to because they don't have the words nor the experiences. It does so in a sweet, gentle, and funny way. And adults will learn, too; about same-sex relationships from a "knowing" point of view. This book is a gift in every sense of the word." --Steve Kmetko, award-winning journalist"Dan Crowley has a natural gift for homily, for taking lived experience and expressing stories of love and gratitude, inspiration and grace. He also has a silly, sweet (and slightly wicked) sense of humor. Danny, Growing Up Gay & Creative combines personal and universal stories about growing up gay -- the good, the bad, and the embarrassing -- and reminds us it's all worth it, if only we will persevere." --Tom Bachtel, Illustrator, and Caricaturist, Longtime Illustrator fo the New Yorker's Talk of the Town

Danny, may have been pretending to use his tablet, but he really was thinking about what his dad had said while practicing his speech in the car, "If humans had never asked questions we would still be living in caves. It takes smart people to solve our problems and smart people get smarter by seeking information from smarter people and that is why we are here today "Danny jumped up from his chair. His Dad was right, Danny was struggling with reading, and he knew he needed help, he needed to talk to the smartest person he knew. He needed to talk to . . .Grammy Danny, kind of groaned, he knew his ABC's. Grammy replied yes, Danny did know his alphabet, but did he know how just 26 letters could create more the than 140,000 words that were currently being used in our English vocabulary? Did he know that six of those letters were, like the big shots of the show, because at least one of them had to appear in every one of those words? Learning to read was like chipping away at a giant iceberg. Recognizing the letters and reciting them in order only chipped away a tiny sliver However if he knew how to figure out words he could knock off a very big chunk and that would help him read. Grammy had one more question. Could Danny tell her what the most important word he needed to know in any story? Danny said of course, he could not, no one could, not even a genius Grammy laughed and made a very loud buzzing sound to let Danny know, his answer was wrong The most important word to know . . . is the next one And if he learned how to figure out words, he would never have to worry about his ability to read a book After all books are just words strung together to make sentences, sentences are strung together to make paragraphs that are strung together to tell a story and Grammy had a story she was about to share

At times hilarious, at times heart-wrenching; full of wit and wisdom, "Danny Boy" is a must-read for anyone struggling to care for a special needs child. This true story explores the lessons we can learn from people with disabilities and the reasons why a loving God allows some to struggle and suffer, while others enjoy healthy bodies. Told from the perspective of the oldest sister in a family with a severely disabled child, this collection of real-life, behind-the-scenes experiences highlights the difficulties, disasters, and poignant moments that inevitably happen when caring for those with special needs. See the effect these experiences have had on each member of the family over the course of nearly 35 years of round-the-clock care for brother and son. Prologue: "I was not quite eight years old when Danny was born. Even at that young age I can remember the exact moment I knew my life, my family's lives, everything we had known up to that point had changed forever. It was evening in early summer. I walked to my parents' bedroom at the end of the upstairs hallway wearing a soft summer nightgown and lurked silently, just inside the doorway. Mom and Dad stood side-by-side, arms around each other with their backs to me, looking down on their newborn son as he lay under the bilirubin lights in his crib. I don't remember any words being spoken-only that I think mom was crying. Or maybe the baby was. What I do remember as the scene was forever stamped on my consciousness is that I knew something was wrong. Maybe not even wrong. Just different. This baby was different. And somehow, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again. And it never has been."
What if your nose was full of tiny monsters, or you had one who liked to swing in your hair? Well there's no room for tiny little critters round here, so join Danny and Dad and make them disappear Danny's Monsters is a story of a young boy called Danny and the various monsters who live upon him. This short, fun and brightly illustrated, rhyming story, will have your children laughing out loud, as Danny and his dad find quirky ways to get shot of those pesky little monsters
