Daniel was written during a time when God’s people were struggling to discern how to remain faithful, even as their lives were dominated by the political and cultural forces of the Empire. Daniel’s central themes have remained relevant ever since: the challenge of remaining loyal to God despite the alternately seductive and threatening voices of imperial powers; the indispensability of humility before God; the perpetual problem of human arrogance and failure to recognize the overarching power of God; the insatiable and life-denying human thirst for power and control; and the call to find in God the source of just, joyful and abundant living. As people today try to make sense of a newly emerging global reality, Daniel continues to speak an important word about faithful living. Who truly controls our lives? To what or whom do we owe ultimate allegiance? To whom do the kingdom, the power and the glory belong? This book invites readers to consider the questions that Daniel raises and then live out the answers.
The Book of Questions

The Book of Questions

Edmond Jabès

The Book of Questions, of which volumes IV, V, VI are together published here, is a meditative narrative of Jewish Experience, and, more generally, man's relation to the world. In these volumes the word is personified in the woman Yaël, silence in her still-born child Elya. Even though words imply ambiguity and lies, they are the home of the exile. A book becomes the Book, fragments of the law that are in some way unified, where past and present, the visionary, and the common place, encounter each other. For Jabès every word is a question in the book of being. Man defines himself in the world against all that threatens his existence- death, the infinite, silence, that is, God, his primal opponent. How can one speak what cannot be spoken?

"To take the wrong door means indeed to go against the order that presided over the plan of the house, over the layout of the rooms, over the beauty and rationality of the whole. But what discoveries are made possible for the visitor! The new path permits him to see what no one other than himself could have perceived from that angle. All the more so because I am not sure that one can enter a written work without having forced one's own way in first." - from In Place of a Foreword

Don Juan's sexual conquests have gained him an infamous reputation all over Europe. When the Devil himself begins to drag him to Hell, Don Juan makes a bargain: In exchange for another ten years of life, he will commit to doing the Devil's dark work himself by bedding as many women as possible and leaving them wanting and devastated.A decade later, the Devil catches up with Don Juan in Venice. Through a dizzying melange of puppetry, riddles and mysterious women clad in masks and cloaks, the Devil shows Don Juan that though he believed he was a master at playing romantic and sexual games, in truth he was but a plaything. This translation of one of Rostand's final works is, like the French original, written completely in rhymed couplets.

One Hell of a Ride: A Memoir

One Hell of a Ride: A Memoir

Edmond F. Jared

Ed Jared's memoir is a big story. For one thing, it's the memoir of a member of the generation Tom Brokaw called "the greatest generation any society has produced." Ed Jared served America as a pilot in World War II; he was part of the China, Burma, India Hump operation, flying over the Himalayas to supply troops in China. His insider's observations of day-to-day life as a Hump pilot as well as extreme emergencies, pranks, and personalities are set in his overall awareness of the realities of the danger he faced and his always firm grasp of how to achieve his goal: do his job and survive the experience. If all we had of Ed Jared's life story were his Hump tales, we would feel he had had quite a life indeed. But there is so much more. When he returned home after the war, he made a good life for himself and his family, beginning with flying and then developing other areas of expertise as well. He worked hard at whatever he found to do in the Gainesville, Georgia, area where he settled: flying, training pilots, economic development. A most illuminating moment in this part of his story occurs when he is offered a job as a corporate pilot by Jesse Jewell, a prominent poultry man. Jared made it clear that he did not want to sit and wait at the airport while the passengers went off to attend to business. He wanted to be a part of the action, too, learning and gaining experience. And that's what he did, building a fine career in the world-wide military resale market, while at the same time continuing his military service in the United States Air Force Reserve. Perhaps most importantly, he also managed to achieve his dream of establishing a stable life for his family with a place his children could call home. Ed Jared's memoir is a national and personal history, a fascinating story and a primer for how to succeed in business and live a good life.
