Farmer Herman and the Flooding Barn is a truly unique children's book with a big heart. Based on a true story, this beautiful and whimsical book explores Farmer Herman's quest to solve a VERY big problem. After considering a few silly ideas of how to take care of his flooding barn, Farmer Herman comes up with maybe the silliest idea of all-find 344 friends to come help pick it up and move it! This inspiring story from Bruno, Nebraska has been told around the world demonstrating the power of solving big problems together. One group of people who were inspired by the Bruno barn-moving story were a group of advocates around the country who are working together to provide more than enough for kids and families in foster care. As a way to raise awareness for children in foster care, 344 of these passionate people wrote and illustrated this book together. Kids, adoptive and foster parents, child welfare professionals, pastors, organizational leaders, recording artists, and authors have all contributed original drawings that have been used to illustrate the entire book. Illustrators include Jars of Clay, Andrew Peterson, Dennis and Barbara Rainey, Dr. Karyn Purvis, John Luke Robertson (Duck Dynasty) and many others. Danny Herman was born in 1935 in Königsberg in East Prussia. As the Nazis were rounding up Jews, Danny’s father managed to escape to England in July 1939. He travelled to the Kitchener Camp in Kent, which helped refugees secure visas for safer places. Danny and his mother arrived in England just three days before war was declared in 1939, and his father was later sent to an internment camp on the Isle of Man.Danny went on to become a successful runner, competing in many international athletics events and volunteering in many roles, including at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Danny’s detailed memories of arriving in England, initially at the seaside in Kent and then moving to Manchester, create a vivid picture of life-changing events as experienced by a young child.Danny’s book is part of the My Voice book collection, a stand-alone project of The Fed, the leading Jewish social care charity in Manchester, dedicated to preserving the life stories of Holocaust survivors and refugees from Nazi persecution who settled in the UK. The oral history, which is recorded and transcribed, captures their entire lives from before, during and after the war years. The books are written in the words of the survivor so that future generations can always hear their voice. The My Voice book collection is a valuable resource for Holocaust awareness and education.

A true game changer for writers that gives the latest insider information about getting published from the three-decade guru of the publishing industry As a new agent in the late 1980s, Jeff Herman was bothered by the fact that most writers had minimal access to agents and editors. It simply wasn't a meritocracy, and many excellent works never saw the light of day. He decided to give everyone access to the information needed to realize their writing and publishing dreams. Sharing insider insights from his fellow publishing gatekeepers became his mission, and for each new edition of this guide, he queries 175 of his fellow agents and presents their frank and fresh, often quirky and entertaining responses. Over the past three decades, countless writers have turned to Herman's guide to figure out how to unlock the seemingly impervious doors to getting published. It reveals: the crucial differences between independent houses and the "Big Four" publishershard truths about self-publishingtools to discern and exploit the rapidly changing publishing environmenthow writers unwittingly disqualify themselves from the consideration they deserve, and how to optimize chances with agentscritical thinking skills for outside-the-box publishing strategiesthe nuts and bolts of superior query letters and proposalshow to spot and avoid ever-more-prevalent scamsthe value of "book doctors" and when to consider hiring themwhat to do -- and not do -- once you've got an editor or publisher interestedHerman's guidance is lauded by new and veteran writers, publishing professionals, and critics alike. It remains the go-to guide for everything anyone ever wanted to know about book publishing.
Sam Herman (1936-2020) stands at the very centre of the development of the international Studio Glass Movement. He was not only present for the birth of the Movement in the United States, but was its founding father in Great Britain and Australia. This book is the first to deal directly with the genesis of the Movement and the pioneering work of Herman within it, while also shedding light on his wider practice in sculpture and painting. The son of Polish immigrants, Mexican by birth, and brought up in the tougher New York boroughs, Herman travelled to London in the mid-1960s and went on to head up the Glass Department at the Royal College of Art. From there he inspired a generation of artists, created revolutionary techniques and was instrumental in the development of colour and texture in blown glass. For art historians, collectors and aficionados of glass, this book provides a welcome and comprehensive evaluation of Herman’s position within the Studio Glass Movement, the history of glass art, as well as the wider context of modern British art. While discussion of his sculpture and painting reveal further dimensions to Herman's ongoing, and indefatigable, explorations in form, composition and colour.
These journals provide great insight into the mind and art of one of the great 20th century artists. Though born in Poland, he is best known for his paintings of Welsh miners, for it was workers that inspired him, and he painted them with great simplicity, almost as monuments to work, and often with the sun and sky behind them so that they looked like latter-day saints. The journals reveal his artistic heritage, who inspired him, what he was in painters, what he thought of their technique. This is a fascinating book for anyone interested in art.
