Passionate Work

Passionate Work

Corps de ballet literally means the "body" of the ballet company, and it refers to the group of dancers who are not principals. Another large group of dancers puts together portfolios of work, often across several dance companies. These categories of dancers typically don't have name recognition and yet comprise the majority of professional dancers today. The ways that they stitch together careers, through dedication, grit, and no small amount of skill – and the reasons they have for doing so without the promise of fame or fortune – are telling of broader trends that shape the precarious labor of professional dance, and creative careers more generally. In Passionate Work, dance hobbyist and sociologist, Ruth Horowitz captures their stories. When creative labor is studied, it is often thought of in opposition to more conventional work, and the primary metric that distinguishes them is passion. Professional creatives are not working in the traditional sense because they are following their passion. By tracing the careers of such dancers, Horowitz troubles the binary understanding of passion and work. A career in dance requires both, and approaching her subjects through this lens allows her to explore their strategies for sustaining passion through the ups and downs of a career. Horowitz explores how dancers evaluate the rewards and challenges of a notoriously underpaid, and uncertain profession. Horowitz considers major dimensions of a career in a performing art, documenting each stage in a dancer's life. Above all, she shines a light on the strategies used to achieve a sense of biographical continuity in a world often marked by discontinuity and rupture.

One Simple Idea

The power of positive thinking. It is an idea deeply rooted in American culture, from Oprah to The Secret to the mass-media ministries of Joel Osteen and T.D. Jakes. Yet no one has examined how this one simple idea?to think positively?has morphed from metaphysics into mass belief. In One Simple Idea, Mitch Horowitz tracks the history of the positive-thinking movement from its pioneers to its most dramatic personalities, including Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale. Positive thinking has been the root of studies on the placebo effect, the 12-step approach to overcoming addition, and the mind-body connection in treating illness. And it is central to the American idea of success, as seen in political messages like Ronald Reagan’s ?Nothing is impossible” or President Obama’s ?Yes, we can” and slogans such as the U.S. Army’s ?Be all you can be” and Nike’s ?Just do it.” This paperback edition includes new exercises and methods, which readers can use to test the validity of positive-mind mechanics in their daily lives. One Simple Idea answers the age-old question?Does it work??and shows that, yes, positive thinking can change the world.
America Betrayed: How a Christian Monk Created America & Why the Left Is Determined to Destroy Her
"America Betrayed deserves a place among the greatest books of our time."--CONGRESSMAN LOUIE GOHMERT America is now engulfed in a crisis that goes to the very foundations of its democracy. To destroy Americans' pride in their heritage and undermine their will to defend it, the attacks on America's heritage begin with malicious slanders intended to turn the American dream of equality and freedom into a "white supremacist" nightmare. We are told America, from its inception, has been a "racist" nation that treats minorities as less than human. We are told America deserves to be destroyed. This destructive lie is now the official doctrine of the Biden White House, the "woke" Pentagon, the Democratic Senate, and the curricula of American schools. America Betrayed restores the true history of America's achievements and its role as a beacon of freedom. Framed by an account of Martin Luther's history and ideas, David Horowitz demonstrates that racial progress in America originates not from Leftist policy but from its founding ideals. America Betrayed is a history and a manifesto focused on the current war to save our country and restore the dignity and freedom of the individual.

becuz is a little narration of an ego death and a bunch of people you meet. now in black and white to save some bucks. do you find yourself asking "why?" trying to lose 5 pounds fast or make a quick buck or day hooking or losing track of your authentic self? well it's me here, the emotion machine and i'd like to set some things straight and also introduce you to some of my friends. when doctor Freud invented emotions in the 1890s he had no idea how popular they'd become. oh, well here comes my physical trainer dr. Beef: he said do you ever feel what you'd call a "negative sensation?" do you ever resent yr body, which can get in the way of goodtimes? do you ever wish instead of piece of aching fishy flesh you were simply a brain in a yellowgreen jar of vinegar? you've had a body almost yr whole life and what of it? you barely use the thing. when yr in the shower you only scrub the highlights. of course you remember the honeymoon years, when u figured out locomotion and the uh particular brand of acupressure if-you-know-what-i-mean? that's what the book's about. what's on the idiot box? oh, him? we keep him there because he has become addicted to corners. the news: is man a bad species? see more at 11. are we all insane? or just Charlie? but can get off the television and just speak about the "intimate act" for a moment? the tippy top on the haunted hay ride called "human experience." yesterday i saw a hit flick called "while i'm naked" in the genre of "help i'm a teenage werewolf/alcoholic " and it got me thinking. i took my very illustrated kama sutra off the wall and then you may have noticed i never came back. . . okay it's me the emotion machine speaking now you may have noticed my exhaust has turned black. no it does not mean i have not decided on the new pope. it's much worse. yes, it's me, the emotion machine. do you feel it yet? i have a scale model of the human heart in my office but i think there was a mistake at the factory cuz the coin slot seems a tad too big. but let me tell you about my predecessor, The Poet: he faked his death. and then he didn't move eat drink blink or speak for 70 years until he died.
