This book is a companion to A general topology workbook published by Birkhiiuser last year. In an ideal world the order of publication would have been reversed, for the notation and some of the results of the present book are used in the topology book and on the other hand (the reader may be assured) no topology is used here. Both books share the word Workbook in their titles. They are based on the principle that for at least some branches of mathematics a good way for a student to learn is to be presented with a clear statement of the definitions of the terms with which the subject is concerned and then to be faced with a collection of problems involving the terms just defined. In adopting this approach with my Dundee students of set theory and general topology I found it best not to differentiate too precisely between simple illustrative examples, easy exercises and results which in conventional textbooks would be labelled as Theorems.

Such lyric moments find grounding in stories woven through this book—in one story line, a boy with a black mother and white father wishes he could shed his white skin or carve into what lies beneath: “I flung my almost white self / into my mother’s embrace—that brown / embrace I hoped would swallow me whole / and spit back a boy four shades darker.” Another thread follows a marriage and a woman intertwined with hunger and the blues, a woman who hears a whale song in a refrigerator’s hum, who cries hard like the lonely barking of a fox.Even when these poems soften, they can’t be complacent about good fortune: for all the maple seedpods and snow fluttering down here, the poems are always aware of wreckage and car bombs there, and they keep conscious of the mustard gas of old wars and the losses of recent ones. Punctuated with lives that end early, such as those of Hart Crane and Mikey Clark, a high-school classmate who once swiped the Communion wine, Pollock’s collection earns its vitality and romance without closing its eyes to violence and sorrow.

Kant scholars since the early nineteenth century have disaxadgreed about how to interpret his theory of moral motivation. Kant tells us that the feeling of respect is the incentive to moral action, but he is notoriously ambiguous on the question of what exactly this means. In Kant and the Role of Pleasure in Moral Action, Iain Morrisson offers a new view on Kant's theory of moral action. In a clear, straightforward style, Morrisson responds to the ongoing interpretive stalemate by taking an original approach to the problem. Whereas previous commentators have attempted to understand Kant's feeling of respect by studying the relevant textual evidence in isolation, Morrisson illuminates this evidence by determining what Kant's more general theory of action commits him to regarding moral action. After looking at how Kant's treatment of desire and feeling can be reconciled with his famous account of free maxim-based action, Morrisson argues that respect moves us to moral action in a way that is structurally parallel to the way in which nonmoral pleasure motivates nonmoral action. In reconstructing a unified theory of action in Kant, Morrisson integrates a number of distinct elements in his practical philosophy. Kant and the Role of Pleasure in Moral Action is part of a new wave of interest in Kant's anthropological (that is, psychological) works.

This includes a detailed discussion of Morita equivalence of $C^*$-algebras, a review of the necessary sheaf cohomology, and an introduction to recent developments in the area. The book is accessible to students who are beginning research in operator algebras after a standard one-term course in $C^*$-algebras.The authors have included introductions to necessary but nonstandard background. Thus they have developed the general theory of Morita equivalence from the Hilbert module, discussed the spectrum and primitive ideal space of a $C^*$-algebra including many examples, and presented the necessary facts on tensor products of $C^*$-algebras starting from scratch. Motivational material and comments designed to place the theory in a more general context are included. Graph algebras are a family of operator algebras which are associated to directed graphs. These algebras have an attractive structure theory in which algebraic properties of the algebra are related to the behavior of paths in the underlying graph. In the past few years there has been a great deal of activity in this area, and graph algebras have cropped up in a surprising variety of situations, including non-abelian duality, non-commutative geometry, and the classification of simple $C^*$-algebras.The first part of the book provides an introduction to the subject suitable for students who have seen a first course on the basics of $C^*$-algebras. In the second part, the author surveys the literature on the structure theory of graph algebras, highlights some applications of this theory, and discusses several recent generalizations which seem particularly promising. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in graph theory and operator algebras.
