Anna Hierta-Retzius var dotter till tidningskungen Lars Johan Hierta, gift med skallmätaren Gustaf Retzius och i sin ungdom nära vän med Ellen Key. Anna Hierta-Retzius arbete för kvinnors och barns rätt har lyfts fram av enstaka moderna kvinnohistoriker men när kvinnokampen beskrivs på bred front faller hon ofta bort. Länge var hon ihågkommen endast som "sedlighetshyenan", överklasskvinnan som med blå plym i håret tågade in till festligheterna till diktaren Ibsens ära, och som sedan sägs ha legat bakom de 284 kvinnornas protest mot Ellen Keys tal om en Ny moral för Den nya kvinnan. Hur kom det sig att hon, som i ungdomen varit beundrad och älskad av många i Stockholms liberala kulturkretsar, i mogen ålder gjordes till åtlöje i skandalpressen? Vem minns idag att Anna Hierta i sin strid för samma kvinnofrid som vi slåss för idag, oförskräckt och radikalt argumenterade för samskolor som en väg mot ett naturligare umgänge mellan könen? I sina unga år hade hon tillsammans med sin syster Ebba en central roll bland eleverna i den berömda Lärokursen för fruntimmer. Tillsammans med Lars Hierta och Ellen Ankarsvärd grundade systrarna Hierta också Föreningen för Gift Qvinnas Eganderätt. Och 1878, precis innan hon gifte sig, förverkligade hon en dröm om en skola som snart togs ifrån henne. Detta är den första volymen av två om en av vår tids mest beryktade offentliga kvinnor och om hennes tid, 1841-1924. Gerda Helena Lindskog är född i Västergötland och har under flera decennier bott växelvis i norra Sverige och Visby. Som författare och forskare har hon haft inriktning på bilden av samerna och Norrland i barnlitteraturen, men också på den kontroversiella historien om arbetsstugor för barn i Norrbotten och Västerbotten. Ongoing transformations of the political organization of Europe, where both the nation-state and the European Union are challenged, make it possible to explore phenomena that are difficult to see in stable periods. An upsurge in accountability-demands, where political leaders are required to explain and justify what they are doing, is one such phenomenon. Mainstream approaches to democratic accountability, assuming settled principal-agent relations may give insight into the routines of institutional accountability. This book argues that it is not enough to analyze how accountability processes contribute to routinized maintenance of an established order within relatively stable, simple, and well-known situations. We need to understand accountability in eras of institutional confusion and contestation and in dynamic, complex, and unknown situations. First, variations in the relations between democratic accountability and political association, organization, and agency are endogenous to politics. Second, accountability processes take place within both settled and unsettled orders. They can be both order-maintaining and order-transforming. Third, accountability involves sense-making as well as decision-making. Fourth, accountability may involve mass mobilization or go on largely unnoticed by the public. Fifth, accountability processes may or may not foster new ideas about political order, government, and the role of rank-and-file citizens in political life. They may or may not affect what democracy will mean and imply in the future. The aim of this book is twofold: to contribute to the theorization of democratic accountability and to discuss what accountability processes tell us about political order and orderly change in general.

Its most ubiquitous ingredient, hops, was used by the Hanseatic League to establish the export dominance of Hamburg and Bremen in the sixteenth century. The world we live in is hugely unequal. People in a better socioeconomic position do not only lead more comfortable lives, but also longer and healthier lives. This is true not only in the poorer parts of the world but also in the richest countries, including the advanced welfare states of Western Europe which have successfully pushed back poverty and other forms of material disadvantage. Why are health inequalities - systematically higher rates of disease, disability, and premature death among people with a lower level of education, occupation or income - so persistent? How can we expect to reduce this when it persists even in the most advanced states? Written by a leading figure in public health, this book looks to answer these questions by taking a broad, critical look at the scientific evidence surrounding the explanation of health inequalities, including recent findings from the fields of epidemiology, sociology, psychology, economics, and genetics. It concludes that a simplistic view, in which health inequalities are a direct consequence of social inequality, does not tell us the full story. Drawing upon a unique series of studies covering 30 European countries and more than three decades of observations, it shows that health inequalities are partly driven by autonomous forces that are difficult to counteract, such as educational expansion, increased social mobility, and rapid but differential health improvements. This book deals with ongoing processes of European cooperation and integration, processes that may have a potential to change the political organization of Europe. Based on ideas from 'the new institutionalism' the book offers a systematic perspective on institutional change and in particular the role of institutions in relation to four central and durable issues in the study of political life. These are: (1) the mediation between unity and diversity: what ties a society together and what keeps it apart. (2) The relations between citizens and their helpers: why the democratic deficit in the European Union can not be eliminated solely by making mechanisms of direct citizens participation and representation more efficient. Needed are also institutions that make direct participation redundant because they routinely work with integrity, generating expected and desired outcomes. (3) The relation between democratic design and historical drift: To what degree democracies are able to design and reform key institutions of governance so that their structures reflect popular will, understanding and control. Many reformers argue that the future of democracies depends on the quality of their political institutions. If so, it may be worthwhile examining the democratic-instrumental vision of citizens and their representatives -- which assumes that they can and should decide how they might be organized and governed -- and thereby develop a better theoretical understanding of the nature, architecture, dynamics of change, performance, and effects of institutions. It may be useful to study the possibilities and limitations of governing through deliberately changing institutional arrangements and thereby achieving intended, anticipated and desired effects - including how institutions contribute to organized rule, orderly change, civilized co-existence, unity in diversity and the ability to accommodate and continuously balance rather than eliminate what John Stuart Mill called "standing antagonisms". This book offers an organization-theory-based institutional approach and it assumes that a fruitful route to improved understanding of political organization and government is to observe large-scale institutional reforms. The primary source of insight is the grand experiment in political integration through institution building and polity formation in Europe - the European Union. Yet, the book relates to century-long controversies concerning what is good government and how best to organize common affairs. The main challenge is to examine the claim that theoretical ideas and concepts developed in the context of the sovereign state are outdated in the context of the emerging European polity and a globalized world and to analyze what students of political institutions, as well as citizens, can learn from recent European experiments in democratic organization and government.

Today, most Uyghurs are Muslims. For centuries, however, Uyghurs were Buddhists. By around 1000 CE, they, like many of their neighbors, had decisively turned toward the Dharma, and a golden age of Uyghur Buddhism flourished under the Mongol empire. Dwelling along the Silk Road in what is now northwestern China, they stood at the center of Buddhist Eurasia, linking far-flung regions and traditions.
