Mappae Mundi

Michael Fox; Stephen R. Reimer

University of Alberta Press
2008
sidottu
This catalogue showcases some of the treasures of the University of Alberta's Map and Special Collections, as well as other U of A Libraries, particularly in terms of resources to aid in the study of the cultures of Medieval and Early Modern Europe. The curators have focused on "facsimiles," and one of the ways to view the exhibit is in terms of the art of the facsimile, from early twentieth-century black-and-white photographs to twenty-first-century colour, digital photographs on CD-ROM. A second theme is ancient book production, from the papyrus roll through the medieval parchment codex, down to the modern printed book. The curators have also considered representations of the world and its inhabitants: humans in their many activities and occupations, animals wild and tame, and monsters that dwelled in those parts of the world just beyond the boundary of the known.

Here are earthy poem-prayers for those who believe that God is actually interested in what we think and how we feel. Even if God causes the clouds to roll and stars to shine, God is known as the trustworthy friend and confidant who can be teased, yet also called upon to "look out your window" to "see the smoke hear the noise / please get up." And, yes, here God is always addressed as "Boss," employing the language of nature and rural living. The paradox in these psalms is that calling God "Boss" reminds us that in every psalm, God has powers and understanding the speaker does not, yet the one uttering each prayer believes that the Boss welcomes whatever is on the pray-er's mind. Indeed, the Boss is "all ears."

The Bible and Poetry

The Bible and Poetry

Michael Edwards; Stephen E. Lewis

New York Review Books
2023
nidottu
A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. It includes the Psalms and the Song of Songs of course, but poetry plays an immense part in the prophets and shows up in the historical books of the Old Testament. The New Testament, for its part, reverberates with allusions to the poetry of the Old and concludes with Revelations, a visionary poem, while Jesus, seeking to open his listener's eyes to the kingdom of heaven, describes it with the poetic epithet of "a treasure hid in a field," while the son of God is the "true vine," "the light of the world," "the good shepherd," "the way, the truth, and the life." The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically throughout, and yet readers have rarely considered the implications of that, much less heeded its call. In Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards seeks to transform how the Bible and Christianity are understood, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature of the Bible, but central to its meaning. The creative use of words that is poetry is the necessary medium of the Creator's word, and belief emerges not from precepts and propositions, but out of the lived experience--this is what the Bible offers above all--of the power of that word.

Rapid Review of Medicine in Old Age

Rapid Review of Medicine in Old Age

Michael Vassallo; Stephen Allen

Manson Publishing Ltd
2007
nidottu
This book has two main purposes: formative case analysis and self-assessment of medicine in old age. It presents clinicians with a series of cases on which to base discussion of the investigation and management of patients. It also provides the trainee, or established doctor, with a medium to help prepare for post-graduate examinations and clinical practice. The authors have chosen 109 cases, a total of 250 questions/answers, illustrated by color photographs, diagrams, and tables. The cases cover the main modes of presentation of acute illness in old age, such as fall, confusion, incontinence, weight loss and immobility, with examples from all the major systems. These illustrate the complexity of diagnosis and treatment of medical illness in frail older people and the need to think widely and laterally when caring for such patients. The questions are mostly in best-of-five format to reflect the current style of multiple choice questions used in examination, though some are open questions as the basis for tutorials. Many of the clinical stems have been expanded to improve the educational function of the book and to test more rigorously the reader’s deductive thinking.

Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts, planned for 2020 but postponed because of the pandemic, explores the role of animals in his work – not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. In this powerful series of works, the interaction between man and beast is dangerous and cruel, but also disturbingly intimate. Both are contorted in their anguished struggle, and the erotic lurks not far away: ‘Bullfighting is like boxing,’ Bacon once said. ‘A marvellous aperitif to sex.’ Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication – a significant addition to the literature on Bacon – expert authors discuss Bacon’s approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included wildlife photography and the motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by considering animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon was able to lay bare the role of instinctual behaviour in the human condition. The most effective way for children to learn about science is through hands-on experience, not through memorising theory. That principle is at the heart of Waldorf science teaching, and is the basis for this invaluable book. The authors explore the nature of 'phenomenological' -- experiential -- science' and how it can help middle-school students engage with physics, and stimulate observation and wonder. The book has step-by-step experiments that demonstrate how to approach science in this lively, real-life way. It is an essential book for any teacher who wants to bring this kind of fulfilling interaction into their classroom.
Physiology for Engineers

Physiology for Engineers

This book provides an introduction to qualitative and quantitative aspects of human physiology. It examines biological and physiological processes and phenomena, including a selection of mathematical models, showing how physiological problems can be mathematically formulated and studied. It also illustrates how a wide range of engineering and physics topics, such as electronics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and control theory can be used to describe and understand physiological processes and systems. Throughout the text, there are introductions to measuring and quantifying physiological processes using both signaling and imaging technologies. This new edition includes updated material on pathophysiology, metabolism and the TCA cycle, as well as more advanced worked examples. This book describes the basic structure and models of cellular systems, the structure and function of the cardiovascular system, and the electrical and mechanical activity of the heart, and provides an overview of the structure and function of the respiratory and nervous systems. It also includes an introduction to the basic concepts and applications of reaction kinetics, pharmacokinetic modelling and tracer kinetics. It appeals to final year biomedical engineering undergraduates and graduates alike, as well as to practising engineers new to the fields of bioengineering or medical physics.

This ambitious book provides a comprehensive history of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Programme on AIDS (GPA), using it as a unique lens to trace the global response to the AIDS pandemic. The authors describe how WHO came initially to assume leadership of the global response, relate the strategies and approaches WHO employed over the years, and expound on the factors that led to the Programme’s demise and subsequent formation of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS(UNAIDS). The authors examine the global impact of this momentous transition, portray the current status of the global response to AIDS, and explore the precarious situation that WHO finds itself in today as a lead United Nations agency in global health.Several aspects of the global response – the strategies adopted, the roads taken and not taken, and the lessons learned – can provide helpful guidance to the global health community as it continues tackling theAIDS pandemic and confronts future global pandemics.Included in the coverage:The response before the global responseBuilding and coordinating a multi-sectoral responseContaining the global spread of HIVAddressing stigma, discrimination, and human rightsRethinking global AIDS governanceUNAIDS and its place in the global responseThe AIDS Pandemic: Searching for a Global Response recounts the global response to the AIDS pandemic from its inception to today. Policymakers, students, faculty, journalists, researchers, and health professionals interested in HIV/AIDS, global health, global pandemics, and the history of medicine will find it highly compelling and consequential. It will also interest those involved in global affairs, global governance, international relations, and international development.
