Colleen Moore (1899-1988) was one of the most popular and beloved stars of the American silent screen. Remembered primarily as a comedienne in such films as Ella Cinders (1926) and Orchids and Ermine (1927), Moore's career was also filled with dramatic roles that often reflected societal trends. A trailblazing performer, her legacy was somewhat overshadowed by the female stars that followed her, notably Louise Brooks and Clara Bow. An in-depth examination of Moore's early life and film career, the book reveals the ways in which her family and the times in which she lived influenced the roles she chose. Included are forewords written by film historian Joseph Yranski, a friend of the actress, and by Moore's stepdaughter, Judith Hargrave Coleman.

Greg Moore is one of three sons of NASCAR Hall of Famer Bud Moore. Bud is a highly decorated World War II veteran who landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. Greg grew up in an auto racer's world in which his father's cars and drivers won dozens of races and back to back championships. Those drivers were Greg's friends, and two died in racing crashes within a year when he was 6 to 7 years old. Greg chose racing over college and went to work in his father's business, staying there for the next 25 years. He worked especially with racing engines and became team manager for such winning drivers as Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Ricky Rudd and Geoff Bodine until Bud Moore Engineering was sold in 2000. Greg accompanies his father everywhere making personal appearances. His personal recollections of a life that others could only dream of, from childhood to adulthood, give fascinating insight into the world of big-time stock car racing.

One of NASCAR's pioneers, Bud Moore won countless races in the sport's early rough and tumble days. In almost four decades as a car owner, he was victorious at the Daytona 500, the Southern 500--three times--and at dozens of other NASCAR events, and won three Grand National Division championships, a Grand American championship and the Sports Car Club of America Trans Am championship. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011, with 63 wins and 43 poles. The cars built by Bud Moore Engineering have been raced by some of America's most talented drivers, including Buck Baker, Bobby Allison, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Tiny Lund, David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Fireball Roberts and many others. Moore continuously sought to improve his machines, making them not only faster but safer, and many of his innovations were quickly adopted throughout NASCAR and by the auto industry. This is Moore's story in his own words, covering his early life in Depression-era Spartanburg, South Carolina, his combat experience during the Invasion of Normandy, his racing career, and his family life and retirement as a gentleman farmer. Many never before seen photos are included.

Not afraid to tackle provocative topics in American culture, from gun violence and labor policies to terrorism and health care, Michael Moore has earned both applause and invective in his career as a documentarian. In such polarizing films as Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Sicko, Moore has established a unique voice of radical nostalgia for progressivism, and in doing so has become one of the most recognized documentary filmmakers of all time.In the first in-depth study of Moore’s feature-length documentary films, editors Thomas W. Benson and Brian J. Snee have gathered leading rhetoric scholars to examine the production, rhetorical appeals, and audience reception of these films. Contributors critique the films primarily as modes of public argument and political art. Each essay is devoted to one of Moore’s films and traces in detail how each film invites specific audience responses.Michael Moore and the Rhetoric of Documentary reveals not only the art, the argument, and the emotional appeals of Moore’s documentaries but also how these films have revolutionized the genre of documentary filmmaking.

This book provides a methodological understanding of the theoretical and technical limitations to the longevity of Moore’s law. The book presents research on factors that have significant impact on the future of Moore’s law and those factors believed to sustain the trend of the last five decades. Research findings show that boundaries of Moore’s law primarily include physical restrictions of scaling electronic components to levels beyond that of ordinary manufacturing principles and approaching the bounds of physics. The research presented in this book provides essential background and knowledge to grasp the following principles: Traditional and modern photolithography, the primary limiting factor of Moore’s law Innovations in semiconductor manufacturing that makes current generation CMOS processing possible Multi-disciplinary technologies that could drive Moore's law forward significantly Design principles for microelectronic circuits and components that take advantage of technology miniaturization The semiconductor industry economic market trends and technical driving factorsThe complexity and cost associated with technology scaling have compelled researchers in the disciplines of engineering and physics to optimize previous generation nodes to improve system-on-chip performance. This is especially relevant to participate in the increased attractiveness of the Internet of Things (IoT). This book additionally provides scholarly and practical examples of principles in microelectronic circuit design and layout to mitigate technology limits of previous generation nodes. Readers are encouraged to intellectually apply the knowledge derived from this book to further research and innovation in prolonging Moore’s law and associated principles.
George Moore and the Autogenous Self

In the midst of an explosion of interest in the field of autobiography, there have developed critical languages and approaches that allow us to read both George Moore's fiction and his fictive autobiographies in new and exciting ways. Elizabeth Grubgeld presents a fresh look at the diverse experiments in fiction and the highly ironic and multi-generic performances Moore put forth as his life story. She focuses on the tension between Moore's fascination with deterministic theories of human behavior and his need to assert a principle of self-creation, his "autogenous self." Moore's work exhibits a profound recognition of the forces of heredity, gender, culture, and history while simultaneously declaring his belief in an autogenous self. In early novels like A Drama in Muslin and Esther Waters, there is a notable conflict between his postulation of the pure, instinctive individual and the emphasis upon the shaping power of heredity and economics inherent in the traditions of social realism that he adopts. In The Untilled Field, The Lake, and later works, Moore perfects a narrative technique that, in highlighting the power of subjective memory, allows his characters to work out a new relation with the forces of history. Grubgeld's discussion of satire, caricature, and parody as autobiographical forms will contribute greatly to an understanding of how Moore viewed the relations between the self and the surrounding world. This study, which also incorporates a theoretical discussion of letters as autobiography, will be of interest to specialists in Irish studies, late Victorian and modern British literature, gender studies, and autobiography.

The Southern and Central Alabama Expeditions of Clarence Bloomfield Moore
Covering 19 years of excavations, this volume provides an invaluable collection of Moore's pioneering archaeological investigations along Alabama's waterways. In 1996, The University of Alabama Press published The Moundville Expeditions of Clarence Bloomfield Moore, which covered a large part of Moore's early archaeological expeditions to the state of Alabama. This volume collects the balance of Moore's Alabama expeditions, with the exception of those Moore made along the Tennessee River, which will be collected in another, forthcoming volume focusing on the Tennessee basin. This volume includes: Certain Aboriginal Remains of the Alabama River (1899); Certain Aboriginal Remains of the Tombigbee River(1901); a portion of Certain Aboriginal Remains of the Northwest Florida Coast (1901); The So-Called 'Hoe-Shaped Implement' (1903); Aboriginal Urn-Burial in the United States (1904); A Form of Urn-Burial on Mobile Bay (1905); Certain Aboriginal Remains of the Lower Tombigbee River (1905); Certain Aboriginal Remains on Mobile Bay and on Mississippi Sound (1905); a portion of Mounds of the Lower Chattahoochee and Lower Flint Rivers (1907); a portion of The Northwest Florida Coast Revisited(1918). Craig Sheldon's comprehensive introduction focuses both on the Moore expeditions and on subsequent archaeological excavations at sites investigated by Moore. Sheldon places Moore's archaeological work in the context of his times and against the backdrop of similar investigations in the Southeast. Sheldon discusses practical matters, such as the various assistants Moore employed and their roles in these historic expeditions. He provides brief vignettes of daily life on the Gopher and describes Moore's work habits, revealing professional and personal biographical details previously unknown about this enigmatic archaeologist.

"Everything I do, I intend to make on a large scale . . . Size itself has its own impact, and physically we can relate ourselves more strongly to a big sculpture than to a small one." —Henry Moore It was Moore’s intention that these large-scale forms be interacted with, viewed close-up, and even touched. In order that their heft and mass be perceived in a myriad of settings, they were most commonly placed outdoors, subject to the effects of changing light, seasons, and terrain. Within the controlled white environment of the gallery space, the sheer volume and mammoth proportions of the sculptures are more keenly felt. Brimming with latent energy, their richly textured surfaces and sensual, rippling arcs and concavities can be seen to new effect.

Here is a collection intended to showcase Mavor Moore's dramatic talent--these are theatre pieces stripped to the bare essentials of character sketches in quick, subtle lines; dramatic conflict, development and resolution with a minimum of props; and an emphasis on the performer's resources as an actor, rather than the externals of scene changes and stage contexts. This collection includes his latest two-act play The Apology, and five one-act plays: The Store, The Pile, Getting In, The Argument and Come Away, Come Away. These plays have all been performed in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.
