Play as personal and social therapy: portraits of the resilience of children In 2017, award-winning Boston- and San Francisco–based photographer Nancy Farese visited Bangladesh to photograph the Rohingya refugee crisis. While she saw firsthand the most violent tendencies of humankind, she also bore witness to endless displays of perseverance from the youngest members of these communities. On the edge of every frame she saw children at play, adapting to their circumstances to socialize and heal with one another. This photobook documents children’s play across 14 countries, including Haiti, Cuba, Burkina Faso, Jordan and the US, in full-color photographs. Farese invites us to consider how this universal activity is threatened by the unrelenting forces of technology, consumerism and even overparenting. Featuring a foreword by New York Times staff photographer James Estrin, Potential Space offers a global view of a mundane activity that powerfully shapes who we are, both as individuals and as a society.

The concept of community is one of the most frequently used and abused of recent philosophical or socio-political concepts. In the 1980s, faced with the imminent collapse of communism and the unchecked supremacy of free-market capitalism, the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy (in The Inoperative Community) and the writer Maurice Blanchot (in The Unavowable Community) both thought it essential to rethink the fundamental basis of "community" as such. More recently, Nancy has renewed the debate by unexpectedly attacking Blanchot's account of community, claiming that it embodies a dangerously nostalgic desire for mythic and religious communion. This book examines the history and implications of this controversy. It analyses in forensic detail Nancy's and Blanchot's contrasting interpretations of German Romanticism, and the work of Heidegger, Bataille, and Marguerite Duras, and examines closely their divergent approaches to the contradictory legacy of Christianity. At a time when politics are increasingly inseparable from a deep-seated sense of crisis, it provides an incisive account of what, in the concept of community, is thought yet crucially still remains unthought.

I first got my inspiration to cook at the tender age of 9 when I said to my mother, Dory, "Mommy, can I make soup?" She didn't hesitate and asked me what kind of soup did I want to make and I responded with "what do we have?" I had a small pot, chicken stock cubes, water and access to whatever was in the fridge. I CUT UP AND PUT EVERY VEGGIE I COULD FIND INTO MY SOUP plus pasta shells...From that moment on, in that Eichler kitchen, on my mother's stove in Foster City, CA I fell in love with cooking and what I could create just using my imagination and what was in the cupboards... I have learned over the years that if I don't have a few basic things on hand I couldn't come up with a new culinary creation when the inspiration struck me and it would drive me crazy. So as a prelogue I would like to outline the 'I gotta have it on hand at all times" pantry list so my creative cooking soul feels safe and content to cook or not to cook...

Nancy Cunard: Perfect Stranger reshapes our understanding of a woman, whose role in key historical, political, and cultural moments of the 20th century was either dismissed and attacked, or undervalued. Here, Jane Marcus, who was one of the most insightful critics of modernism and a pioneering feminist scholar, is unafraid and unapologetic in addressing and contesting Nancy Cunard’s reputation and reception as a spoiled heiress and “sexually dangerous New Woman.” Instead, with her characteristic provocative and energetic writing style, Marcus insists we reconsider issues of gender, race, and class in relation to the accusations, stereotypes, and scandal, which have dominated, and continue to dominate, our perception of Cunard in the public record. In the wake of inadequate histories of radical writing and activism, Nancy Cunard: Perfect Stranger brings its subject into the 21st century, offering a bold and innovative portrait of a woman we all thought we knew.
