Rebellion, Community and Custom in Early Modern Germany

Rebellion, Community and Custom in Early Modern Germany

Norbert Schindler

Cambridge University Press
2002
sidottu
When this volume first appeared in German it inspired a whole generation of young scholars. Schindler recreates the lives of both the poor and excluded; the milieu of the burghers; and the rumbustuous lifestyles of the Counts von Zimmern. A true archivist, he evokes the lost worlds of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century people. He investigates popular nicknames, snowball fights, carnival rituals, even what people did at night-time before the advent of lighting. A final essay deals with an extraordinary late set of trials for witchcraft, in which over 200 people died. Translated into English for the first time, the volume contains a new Foreword by Natalie Zemon Davis and a new introductory essay setting out the key influences of Schindler's work. Norbert Schindler is the leading exponent of historical anthropology in the German-speaking world. A founding member of the German journal Historische Anthropologie, Schindler teaches at the University of Salzburg.
Turbulent Combustion

Turbulent Combustion

Norbert Peters

Cambridge University Press
2000
sidottu
The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.
A Theory of Syntax

A Theory of Syntax

Norbert Hornstein

Cambridge University Press
2008
pokkari
Human language seems to have arisen roughly within the last 50-100,000 years. In evolutionary terms, this is the mere blink of an eye. If this is correct, then much of what we consider distinctive to language must in fact involve operations available in pre-linguistic cognitive domains. In this book Norbert Hornstein, one of the most influential linguists working on syntax, discusses a topical set of issues in syntactic theory, including a number of original proposals at the cutting edge of research in this area. He provides a theory of the basic grammatical operations and suggests that there is only one that is distinctive to language. If this theory is correct then this narrows the evolutionary gap between verbal and non-verbal primates, thus facilitating the rapid evolutionary emergence of our linguistic capacity.
Revelation and the God of Israel

Revelation and the God of Israel

Norbert M. Samuelson

Cambridge University Press
2002
sidottu
Revelation and the God of Israel explores the concept of revelation as it emerges from the Hebrew Scriptures and is interpreted in Jewish philosophy and theology. The first part is a study in intellectual history that attempts to answer the question, what is the best possible understanding of revelation. The second part is a study in constructive theology and attempts to answer the question, is it reasonable to affirm belief in revelation. Here Norbert M. Samuelson focuses on the challenges given from a variety of contemporary academic disciplines, including evolutionary psychology, political ethics, analytic philosophy of religion, and source critical studies of the Bible. This important book offers a unique approach to theological questions and fresh solutions to them and will appeal to those interested in the history of philosophy, religious thought, and Judaism.
Understanding Minimalism

Understanding Minimalism

Norbert Hornstein; Jairo Nunes; Kleanthes K. Grohmann

Cambridge University Press
2005
sidottu
Understanding Minimalism, first published in 2005, is an introduction to the Minimalist Program - the model of syntactic theory within generative linguistics. Accessibly written, it presents the basic principles and techniques of the minimalist program, looking firstly at analyses within Government and Binding Theory (the Minimalist Program's predecessor), and gradually introducing minimalist alternatives. Minimalist models of grammar are presented in a step-by-step fashion, and the ways in which they contrast with GB analyses are clearly explained. Spanning a decade of minimalist thinking, this textbook will enable students to develop a feel for the sorts of questions and problems that minimalism invites, and to master the techniques of minimalist analysis. Over 100 exercises are provided, encouraging them to put these skills into practice. Understanding Minimalism will be an invaluable text for intermediate and advanced students of syntactic theory, and will set a solid foundation for further study and research within Chomsky's minimalist framework.
A Speck of Atlantis - Bimini: the Top of God's Mountain
This art book is a visual and written documentation of a modern-day visionary and his journey into the heart of Bimini. It links the Island of Bimini to the lost continent of Atlantis, and contains 149 color images painted on Bimini by internationally acclaimed visionary artist Norbert H. Kox. His writings suggest the probable connection between the last remaining speck of Atlantis and this tiny island in the Atlantic, located directly within the Bermuda Triangle. The writings postulate interdimensional portals and possible time travel (in agreement with quantum physics) explaining subtle energies that interact with and affect our physical world. The research is well documented and the paintings are stunning. The artworks in this book represent eleven years of painting and research on the Island of Bimini, and although they do not all correlate with Atlantis and the energy of the Universe, they are a documentation of Kox's art exhibitions on the Island. (Soft cover, 8 1/2 X 11; 118 pages).
The Holy Cipher: Who Changed God's Name?

The Holy Cipher: Who Changed God's Name?

Norbert H. Kox

Apocalypse House
2008
pokkari
Norbert H. Kox has researched the Bible in its original languages for more than 30 years, and presents his startling findings here. a"Modern Christianity has been duped. Without ever knowing it, the Antichrist they are warning against has already infiltrated the Church.a" The Key of knowledge has been hidden and the names of God and Saviour gradually removed from common use without raising suspicion or inciting controversy. The two most important names in the history of mankind have been all but obliterated from existence. Where these names are still in tact they are being undermined, by missionaries who believe they are doing a service to God. This treatise is part of a documented research study into the historical linguistic changes in the names of God and Saviour, from the oldest known manuscripts to the modern present-day English versions of the Bible. Along with solid historical and etymological evidence, symmetrical Bible codes are presented as irrefutable ratification.
Logical Form

Logical Form

Norbert Hornstein

Blackwell Publishers
1995
nidottu
This book critically reviews grammatical research into logical form over the past 20 years and reconsiders some of its major themes in the light of recent theoretical innovations. In the late 1970s generative grammarians proposed the existence of an abstract syntactic level of grammatical representation derived from surface structure which was phonetically invisible. This level, dubbed logical form, has been thought of as the information that the grammar contributes to semantic interpretation. The first part of the book reviews the standard arguments for the existence of LF and its format.

Jewish Faith and Modern Science

Jewish Faith and Modern Science

Norbert M. Samuelson

Rowman Littlefield Publishers
2008
sidottu
In Jewish Faith and Modern Science, renowned Jewish philosopher and rabbi Norbert Samuelson argues that modern Jewish philosophy has died—that it has failed to address the challenges to traditional beliefs posed by scientific advances, and is therefore no longer relevant to Jews today. Samuelson confronts these challenges head-on, critically reflecting on how all of the forms of contemporary Judaism, from orthodox to liberal to secular to new age, can address questions raised by the latest scientific advances. Considering questions ranging from the existence of the soul, to the relationship between God and particle physics, to the debate over when life begins and ends, Samuelson paves the way for a rebirth of Jewish philosophy applicable to life in the modern world.

The Semiotic Self

The Semiotic Self

Norbert Wiley

Polity Press
1994
nidottu
This work offers a novel and challenging interpretation of the nature of the self. In opposition to currently fashionable theories, Wiley argues that the self is an integral and autonomous entity. The self is interpreted as a semiotic structure and on this basis the author presents an original analysis of the origins of self-identity. The book draws particularly upon two philosophical sources: the writings of Charles Sanders Peirce and George Herbert Mead. The result is a "trialogical" model in which the present self ("I") talks to the future self ("you") about the past self ("me"). A distinctive feature of Wiley's view is that there is a mutually-supportive relation between the self and democracy, a view which he traces through American history. Providing as it does a means of interpreting the politics of identity in relation to such issues as class, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation, this book will stimulate wide interest.
