Rilke's quiet poems contain exceptional pent-up energy that encompasses the immediacy, wonder, and breathlessness with which the poet experienced life. The English versions of Rilke's poems are very loose translations from the German. Rainer Werner Fassbinder entwickelt in seinen Werken kunstlerische Strategien, um sein Land zu beschreiben. Dabei beschrankt er sich nicht allein auf die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, sondern arbeitet auch die historische Entwicklung des Landes heraus, welche er als kontinuierliche Linie sieht. Diese Kontinuitatslinie manifestiert sich fur Fassbinder jedoch nicht nur in der Historie, sie umfasst seiner Meinung nach alle Lebensbereiche. Er stellt sie auf inhaltlicher wie auch auf kunstlerischer Ebene heraus. Seine so dokumentierte Sichtweise kann als Erganzung zu einer "offiziellen" Geschichte verstanden werden. Die im Ergebnis sehr kritische Aussage uber Deutschland sieht Fassbinder als Anregung zu einer demokratischen Auseinandersetzung.
Du siehst ich stecke mitten im Wald - Rilkes Zitat von 1909 ist nur eines von zahlreichen Belegen in seinen Briefen, die Alfred Hagemann untersucht. Sein Hauptaugenmerk liegt dabei auf den Sujets Wald, Park und Garten in allen Textgattungen, Werkstufen sowie samtlichen biographischen Phasen Rilkes. Intertextuelle und intermediale Aspekte erganzen die Interpretation. Die europaischen Orte, die Rilke literarisch gestaltet, erweisen dabei ihre besondere Qualitat als poetische Orte. Bisher unberucksichtigt in der Forschung war der Aspekt Wald. Insgesamt entsteht ein Themenpanorama, das von Naturlichkeit bis Kunstlichkeit reicht. Aspekte des Themas Natur bei Rilke werden auf diese Weise erkennbar, aber auch die jeweiligen Querverbindungen zur Kunst und zum Zeitkontext.
