A tribute to the influence of one of the “intellectual forbearers” of Disability Studies in Education (DSE), this collection of six essays honors the scholar and activist Steven J. Taylor. The Centennial Professor of Disability Studies, and director of the Center on Human Policy at the Syracuse University School of Education was recognized internationally for his enduring commitment to disability policy, advocacy, and the meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities throughout society. His research, teaching, and scholarship shaped our understanding of disability through a sociological lens honed over decades of enquiry that trace back from his early work on deinstitutionalization and to the present disability trends and controversies. Taylor made clear how we socially construct humanness, belonging, community, and care in much the same way we construct deviance and stigma. Steven J. Taylor: Blue man Living in a Red World provides insight into the theoretical grounding that has fueled DSE research and scholarship for decades. You will also find opportunities for personal reflection about how one might find Taylor’s work intrinsic to current efforts to challenge the persistent segregation and mistreatment of people labeled with intellectual or developmental disabilities. As the third volume in this series that is devoted to unraveling and better understanding the evolution of thought among those recognized as the early voices and critical leaders who laid the foundation for disability studies in education, the contributors to this text reexamine the impact of Taylor’s scholarship on their own thinking, teaching, academic and civic activities. These essays will help you discover that Taylor continues his mentorship of those who ascribe to DSE tenets and more importantly, encourages each of us to use our positions to influence the next generation of disability activists and scholars. Contributors are: Julie Allan, Jennifer Randhare Ashton, Elisabeth De Schauwer, Cheryl M. Jorgensen, Nancy Rice, Janet Story Sauer, Ashley Taylor, Geert Van Hove and Linda Ware.

Comprehensive monograph on one of America’s greatest living architects by award-winning author and architecture critic Robert McCarter. This in-depth monograph is devoted to one of the leading United States architects on the contemporary scene: Steven Holl (b.1947). Richly illustrated with hundreds of colour photographs and Holl’s own watercolours, the book introduces the artist's personality and works, and the studio he founded in 1976, Steven Holl architects. Holl studied architecture at the University of Washington at Seattle, and later in Rome and at the Architectural Association in London. He has worked both in the United States and in Europe, and a great deal in the East, especially in Japan. His most important designs, outstanding in their respect for the cultural and historical environment in which they are set, include the Makuhari residential complex in Japan, the St. Ignatius chapel at the University of Seattle, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki and the extension of the Cranbrook Institute of Science at Bloomfield Hills in Michigan. A professor at the Graduate School of Architecture of Columbia University, Holl has held courses and given lectures in several other institutions in the United States. Examines Steven Holl's intricate and distinctive process of making architecture through approximately one hundred models, related sketches and other studies created for nine recent projects. This publication, and the exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art that it accompanies, investigates the architect Steven Holl's unique process of making architecture, the foundation of which is drawing, almost always by hand. The publication includes an extensive critical essay about Steven Holl and his process by exhibition curator Nina Stritzler-Levine, and additional essays by Kerry Dean Carso and Peter Olshavsky. The projects section that follows these chapters includes descriptions of the eleven projects that are the focus of the exhibition; the exhibition checklist, which corresponds with the organization of the installation; and photographs of the installation.
At the pinnacle of his career and now in his fourth decade as a director, Steven Spielberg is firmly established as the world's most popular film-maker. Celebrated for his mastery of spectacle and fantasy he has, more recently, proven his skill as a craftsman of compelling populist drama. He is an icon of late twentieth century popular culture. From the thrills and zestful adventure of Jaws and the unflinching recreation of Auschwitz in Schindler's List, to the tender idealism of ET and the sombre hymn to brotherhood of Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg takes his audience on new journeys, to places often unknown to the eye but always familiar and recognisable to the heart. With his films AI, Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can, Spielberg continues to invest powerful emotion into familiar genres. His work has become more nuanced and shaded, but its sense of optimism remains. This Pocket Essential examines every Spielberg film since Duel and includes a career overview of a singular director whose work has transcended its origin to become the cinematic vision for a generation of moviegoers.
