Die Geschichte der Moderne ist gekennzeichnet von dem steten Bewusstsein ihrer Krise. The book won the Surveillance Studies Network Book Prize 2014. The book argues that the mobile as a political technology in a broad sense facilitates the global export of the Western concept of individuality. This empowers those subjectivities and mindsets which can adapt to the communication regime of ubiquitous connectivity. Exemplifying two focal points – the use in protests and the surveillance of mobile phones – the book traces political trajectories of mobile phones, just as it provides deep insights into the actual practice of mobile phone use by activists and their surveillance. 50 semi-structured interviews with activists from countries including Brazil, India, Pakistan and Mexico offer a detailed and profound discussion of mobile phone success and failures in different struggles for justice. By situating mobile phone mass dissemination within a political rationality of neoliberalism and its political technology of governmentality, it shows how sovereign rule updates to catch up with the subject’s empowerment through mobile phones. The limits of mobile phone impact on activism are examined, and how it compromises its users when new sovereign means such as data retention or silent SMS surveillance are invoked.

This book is an account of protests organized by trade unions from the late socialism to the 21st century. It uses protest event analysis and mass surveys to examine the impact of trade unions on institutions before and after systemic change. Social protest in the post-war Poland was primarily a working-class phenomenon. Unionized employees were able to influence transformation processes in many ways: directly in enterprises, politically via their representatives in parties, and indirectly by creating a public opinion sympathetic with their goals. Individual chapters contain theoretical assumptions, an overview of employee protest under state socialism, the dynamics of trade union membership, and a detailed description of trade union protest activities after systemic change. A comparison between protest dynamics in Poland and in Hungary serves as illustration of legacies of negotiated transition on social mobilization.

Im Fokus dieser Studie stehen als Protest gerahmte Ereignisse, bei denen politische Forderungen mit kollektivem Spaß, Erlebnis, Spektakel und Vergnügen verbunden Ausdruck verliehen wird. Zu den längst tradierten kulturellen und Spaß betonenden Protestelementen werden aktuell vielfältige neue Ausdrucksformen und Programmelemente in das Repertoire der Organisierenden von Protest aufgenommen. Dabei werden häufig in anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen tradierte Rituale übernommen, modern interpretiert und neu miteinander verknüpft. Diese ‚hybridisierten‘ Formen kollektiven Ungehorsams werden anhand von drei Fallbeispielen ethnografisch und wissenssoziologisch fundiert erforscht und dabei die Bedeutung von Vergnügen, Freude und Spaß herausgearbeitet.
