Surveying for Archaeologists and Other Fieldworkers
Although the preparation of plans is an essential part of the work of a field archaeologist or excavator, many University Departments of Archaeology give very little attention to surveying, regarding it as a subject which should either be left to technicians or picked up during work in the field. As a result, some archaeologists do not even realise that their survey techniques are unsatisfactory. Others, driven by the requirements of their work, devise idiosyncratic methods which are inherently liable to inaccuracy and unnecessarily laborious. The object of this book is to enable archaeologists, even without relevant training, to deal with any problem in surveying. The book is arranged by technique for ease of reference. Thus one part is devoted to Chain Surveying, which has evolved over centuries into the simplest and quickest way of making accurate plans for most types of site; but methods of reconnaissance and of rough survey are also described. Since instrumental work is sometimes necessary, details are given of the construction and use of the Level and of the Theodolite and Tacheometer. Simple but accurate methods – those not requiring a computer – are described for plotting from oblique aerial photographs, and although numerical calculations are seldom needed in archaeological surveys, there are occasions when they can save considerable time and labour, so fully worked examples are given of all relevant calculations, with alternatives according to whether logarithms or an electronic calculator are available.

First Published in 1975. The first Kuwait oil concession agreement, granted on 23rd December 1934 by the late Shaikh Ahmad al Jaber al Subah to the Kuwait Oil Company Ltd., has been of fundamental importance in the history of the State of Kuwait; whose great increase in prosperity and international influence during the last twenty-eight years has directly resulted from its oil production since 1946 under the Agreement and its 1951 successor. Hitherto no full or authoritative account of the very long and complex commercial and political negotiations preceding the Agreement has been compiled; and consequently all descriptions of them so far published (except those merely quoting the Agreement's terms and naming the parties concerned) have contained substantial omissions or errors of fact involving a wrong impression of what actually occurred. This text is a record of the negotiations between 1911 and 1934.

Short-term Visual Information Forgetting (PLE: Memory)

When this title was originally published in 1981, the information processing approach to perception and memory was dominant in experimental psychology, and the research reported here had major implications for future development. After exploring the shortcomings of earlier work in this field, the author develops a new model which he shows to be capable of accounting for a variety of experimental data connected with human information processing, visual perception and attention. The central theme which is discussed is how we select relevant and discard irrelevant information. The basic assumption is that all incoming information is identified, that is, it reaches and activates the appropriate lexical entries. A piece of identified information is described as a unit consisting of three distinguishable codes: a visual code, a lexical or semantic code and a motor or action code. Identified information decays fast, so selective attention operates by selecting those units which have to be saved from this rapid decay. In a sense, therefore, the human information processor is described as struggling against forgetting.
