Relocation by choice. Retirement by accident. Widowed by surprise. Oh. I'm a Widow chronicles my journey after the year in which these life-changing events occurred. At sixty-seven, my husband died soon after we'd moved to the Washington D.C. area for my career-capping job. On the day he died I had no family or friends nearby and no professional engagement. The book recounts the steps I took, the help I found, and the emotional and practical struggles I encountered as I built a new, full life. It presents essays written over years, some published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Grieving, Loss and Healing, in Contagious Optimism and in its sequel, 10 Habits of Truly Optimistic People, and in print and online journals.Unlike most books on widowhood, this is more about living than grieving.Written in a conversational voice, the book offers practical, empathetic support to widows. After losing someone close, Oh. I'm a Widow aims to help readers recover, rebuild, and realize a full new life. What Other Readers ThinkBarbara Rady Kazdan's book Oh. I'm a Widow pulled me in and held me rapt as I watched the confident retiree's life unravel upon losing her husband of forty-two years. Though her three grown children rally to support her, she's stunned as she stares into an empty future. Sprinkled with research studies, humor, and quotes from literary and philosophical greats, such chapters as 'Get Up, Get Dressed, Now What?, ' 'Kissing a Lot of Frogs;' and 'Paddling Upstream and Down' guide us along her rocky path. As Barbara stumbles to move forward, her honesty about what's gone right-and wrong-in her marriage and her life, make her story real and relatable. Her] attempts at finding community, support groups, a purpose, and a new partner will resonate with divorcees, empty nesters, aging singles, all of us who have been thrust into worlds we're not prepared to enter.Marian Mathews Clark, author of These Doors and Sixty Something and Flying Solo

When he was just a boy, he saved a man from drowning. Determined to stop the flooding that plagued his humble San Antonio neighborhood, young Willie Velasquez dedicated his short life to increasing the political power of Latinos. In Dear San Antonio, I'm Gone but not Lost, Willie explains how he helped register millions of Latinos to vote, challenged unfair voting practices, and made his mark on the nation's storied civil rights movement. Join Willie on his door-to-door journey from Westside hero to national voting rights champion. Part memoir, part grassroots political action strategy guide, this lively book reveals the steps Willie took that ultimately transformed the American electoral landscape.
BARBARA is a riches-to-rags tale about an extraordinarily talented, troubled young woman. After Barbara's death in 20 I 0, the author, Wendell Affield, discovered thousands of documents locked in a rodent-infested chickenhouse. Having spent his childhood living with his mother's mental illness, Affield studies the contents in an effort to understand his mother's life and search for clues to his biological father. BARBARA, PARTS I and II, explore Barbara's two-decade downward spiral as she struggles with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Taught by the famous pianist, Emile Bosquet at Institut Droissard, Brussels, Belgium, Barbara's natural talent blossoms. Mouse-gnawed 1939 documents reveal Barbara's impulsive engagement (and possible marriage) in Poland, and her narrow escape from the Nazi invasion. Upon her return to New York, after dropping out of juilliard School, Barbara begins a decade of running from her problems, leaving a wake of failed marriages and rendezvous resulting in four children. Feeling abandoned by her family and searching for a new start, she posts an advertisement in Cupid's Columns that is answered by a bachelor farmer in northern Minnesota. BARBARA, Part III, chronicles the author's search for his biological father and the labyrinth leading to a breakthrough. Acceptance by his new-found family is an incredible testament to the power of love.

The films of Pedro Almodovar have demonstrated great crossover appeal in their ability to attract both mainstream and marginal audiences and to command critical as well as commercial success. The contributors to this anthology of critical essays seek, through close readings of the director's 10 feature films, to analyze the multiple contexts of Almodovar's phenomenal international success. This volume offers a corrective to the glib approaches that have dominated previous discussions of Almodovar's films, which have treated them, on the one hand, as simply the latest contribution to the travel poster image of passionate, romantic Spain, or, on the other, as historical joyrides through the global pop culture scene. As the first comprehensive study of Almodovar's cinema to be published in North America, the book is also noteworthy for the range of critical and theoretical methodologies that the contributors bring to the study of his works. Drawing upon disciplines that run from psychoanalysis, feminism, queer theory, film and media studies, and cultural theory to the empirical study of audience response, the authors nevertheless share a concern to illuminate the specifically Spanish context of the director's films. While this volume serves the important function of introducing American audiences to post-Franco Spanish culture, it also pursues the complementary goal of projecting contemporary Spain into the critical debate on the forms and functioning of postmodern culture and society.
Alone in the Mirror: Twins in Therapy chronicles the triumphs and struggles of twins as they separate from one another and find their individuality in a world of non twins. The text is grounded in issues of attachment and intimacy, and is highlighted by Dr. Barbara Klein’s scholarly research, clinical experiences with twins in therapy, and her own identity struggles as a twin, all of which allow her to present insights into the rare, complicated, and misunderstood twin identity. She presents psychologically-focused real life histories, which demonstrate how childhood experiences shape the twin attachment and individual development, and she describes implications for twins in therapy, their therapists, and parents of twins. Unique to this book are effective therapeutic practices, developed specifically for twins, and designed to raise the consciousness of parents as well. Readers will find these practices and the insights within invaluable, whether they use them to communicate with twin patients, family members, or if they are part of a twinship themselves.
