Zanthius De Lombardo is a womanizing, home-wrecking, self-absorbed, inconsiderate screwup. But all that is about to change. After the failure of his marriage and a suicidal bout with alcoholism, he lands a job as the HR director for a government-run energy company, where he expects nothing more than watercooler gossip and maybe a casual office romance.Instead, Zanthius discovers the business trip he has been sent on is a one-way journey with no return ticket needed, and that the energy company he works for is a front for a consortium of off-book government assassins and spies. When Zanthius doesn't die after swallowing a capsule containing a world-changing formula-as was expected of the 'idiot spy'-he finds himself caught up in a game of international espionage as world governments race to get their hands on the secret formula for the Carbon Factor, a powerful, cheap dirty bomb that fits in a half-gallon milk carton. While attempting to keep the Carbon Factor formula from falling into the wrong hands, Zanthius's once lackluster life is suddenly filled with spies, crooked politicians, terrorist groups, a secret government society, mercenaries, and the threat of death at every turn. He has a passionate romance with a spy who later becomes his wife, and he discovers from his mother shocking revelations about his father, Ben Beckmire, who, along with eleven of his friends, comes to his rescue. Little by little, the 'idiot spy' becomes the man he is meant to be. But is it enough to save the world?

In book four of the 'idiot spy' series, the adventure continues as the group expands and travels overseas to help the new members of its team combat threats to their nation, their families, and possibly humanity itself. What was initially a convenient opportunity to avoid an impending battle by leaving the country becomes a tactical decision necessary to escape Walter, aka Diablo, who vowed to stop at nothing short of the group's complete annihilation. Under the stalwart leadership of Benjamin "The Sarge" Beckmire, the group must once again band together to protect the Carbon Factor and each other, all while being stalked by an international caucus of assassins, terrorists, and crooked politicians. The squad must deftly evade their enemies-foes who are happy to conclude the existence of old Vietnam vets and their families for a lucrative payday-while reminding them that collecting that ransom has been a reward that few have enjoyed.

In book number 5 of the 'idiot spy' series, mayhem becomes the operative word of the group as they continue to witness the wrath of their enemies, both foreign and domestic. In this book, a former adversary, now a valuable informant, is murdered at one of the group's getaways, for reasons unrelated to the Carbon Factor formula. As usual, the group is under extreme pressure to turn over the remaining aspects of the Carbon Factor formula or suffer the consequences. Money continues to flow into their coffers from a lack of payment to those who were unsuccessful in terminating them. New additions to the group occur-death still plagues and pursues them-the former extractionist delivers a baby boy in the mysterious outback. And, the stork continues to fly to another awfully familiar place. A distant family member is appointed to upgrade their defenses. The resultant changes yield a weapons system of apocalyptic proportions-mechanized mayhem
From the Mines to the Streets

From the Mines to the Streets

Benjamin H. Kohl; Linda C. Farthing; Félix Muruchi

University of Texas Press
2011
pokkari
From the Mines to the Streets draws on the life of FÉlix Muruchi to depict the greater forces at play in Bolivia and elsewhere in South America during the last half of the twentieth century. It traces FÉlix from his birth in an indigenous family in 1946, just after the abolition of bonded labor, through the next sixty years of Bolivia's turbulent history. As a teenager, FÉlix followed his father into the tin mines before serving a compulsory year in the military, during which he witnessed the 1964 coup d'État that plunged the country into eighteen years of military rule. He returned to work in the mines, where he quickly rose to become a union leader. The reward for his activism was imprisonment, torture, and exile. After he came home, he participated actively in the struggles against neoliberal governments, which led in 2006-the year of his sixtieth birthday-to the inauguration of Evo Morales as Bolivia's first indigenous president. The authors weave Muruchi's compelling recollections with contextual commentary that elucidates Bolivian history. The combination of an unforgettable life story and in-depth text boxes makes this a gripping, effective account, destined to become a classic sourcebook.
Evo's Bolivia

Evo's Bolivia

Linda C. Farthing; Benjamin H. Kohl

University of Texas Press
2014
nidottu
In this compelling and comprehensive look at the rise of Evo Morales and Bolivia’s Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), Linda Farthing and Benjamin Kohl offer a thoughtful evaluation of the transformations ushered in by the western hemisphere’s first contemporary indigenous president. Accessible to all readers, Evo’s Bolivia not only charts Evo’s rise to power but also offers a history of and context for the MAS revolution’s place in the rising “pink tide” of the political left. Farthing and Kohl examine the many social movements whose agendas have set the political climate in Bolivia and describe the difficult conditions the administration inherited. They evaluate the results of Evo’s policies by examining a variety of measures, including poverty; health care and education reform; natural resources and development; and women’s, indigenous, and minority rights. Weighing the positive with the negative, the authors offer a balanced assessment of the results and shortcomings of the first six years of the Morales administration. At the heart of this book are the voices of Bolivians themselves. Farthing and Kohl interviewed women and men in government, in social movements, and on the streets throughout the country, and their diverse backgrounds and experiences offer a multidimensional view of the administration and its progress so far. Ultimately the “process of change” Evo promised is exactly that: an ongoing and complicated process, yet an important example of development in a globalized world.

Restraining Air Power

Restraining Air Power

THE UNIVERSITY PRESS OF KENTUCKY
2022
sidottu
Is it possible for two combatants who possess equally strong air forces to conduct limited warfare by restraining air operations? In Restraining Air Power, Robert C. Owen asks this question and allows contributing authors to provide theoretical and empirical assessments of restrained air warfare through five historical case studies since 1945. Through an objective analysis of the past, this collection evaluates the principles of escalation and escalation management in conventional warfare scenarios to better understand when, why, and how peer opponents in past conflicts have expanded or restrained air operations. The surge in cyber warfare, the development of artificially intelligent weaponry, and the founding of the US Space Force in 2019 means that analysts and military planners must be prepared to think about escalation management and peer conflict in increasingly complicated and challenging ways. This comprehensive study provides readers with refined theoretical visions of the possibilities and challenges of managing escalation as a powerful mode of warfare between opponents who believe they must choose between sacrificing their own national interests or risking escalated destruction of their economies, military forces, and governing authority. The analysis within the pages of this volume is an attempt to update our understanding of air warfare within a world of unprecedented military complexity and, as such, will hold immense value for specialists in advanced military studies as well as those studying international relations and history.
