At first glance, the Vallée de Joux, a high mountain valley in Jura, Switzerland, does not seem like an especially unusual place. Yet this impression is deceptive, as the British photographer Dan Holdsworth (*1974) has shown in his photographs. Commissioned by the watchmaker Audemars Piguet and recorded over a period of seven years in an area known as the coldest place in Switzerland, Holdsworth’s pictures present the valley in romantic sublimity, as if it were as frozen in time as it is in temperature. This volume of photographs is concerned with time in more ways than one: in the late seventeenth century, the art of timekeeping came to the Vallée de Joux. In 1875, Audemars Piguet settled here.Holdsworth’s work is always informed by an understanding of geology, observations of the climate, and the role of humankind on earth, and has developed a poetic visual vocabulary in which the issue of the nature of time is always palpable.
In 1960, Eberhard Fischer had the opportunity to accompany his father, the art ethnologist Hans Himmelheber, on a major expedition to West Africa. He was actually only meant to film the Dan mask carvers as they worked, as well as their festive performances. Yet the strong personalities of these sculptors impressed the young man deeply and he began to document their life stories, record their artistic work methods in detail, and also to collect their works. The biographies and many of the photographs shown in the book of four mask carvers from the Liberian hinterland are unique in the study of African art, as masks are carved in secret in many of these cultures. Until recently, the works were recognised by art ethnologists and collectors, but rarely the people who created them. The new book presents Fischer's essay for the first time in English, supplemented by additional images and an epilog. A DVD with the historic film recordings of the artists at work completes the book.

Since the mid-1960s when he started out as a fledgling critic, Dan Graham has carved out a unique role for himself, expanding the scope of the Conceptual artist to incorporate art criticism, music criticism, photography and architecture. For this volume, curator Hans Ulrich Obrist met with Graham on several occasions to discuss the artist's work, life and the numerous interests he passionately follows. The conversation thus wanders seamlessly from architecture to rock and roll, philosophy to astrology, Graham's early performance pieces, photography and articles, to the films and glass pavilions for which he is best known today. A fountain of art folklore, Graham offers recollections of friends and colleagues, art work and influences, providing an invaluable insight not only into the New York art scene of the 60s and 70s, but also one of its most influential representatives.
This is the first book to bring together Dan Mitchell’s complete posters and flyers. The British artist designs subversive, socially critical and humorous posters to promote his own shows as well as those of fellow artists, and to serve as critical commentary on everyday occurrences. Whilst carrying on the age-old tradition of poster art, he explores contemporary approaches involving various print sizes and even digital posters. “The Age of LOLZ is Over. Long Live DEATH LOLZ” proclaims Mitchell in a satirical commentary on a serious state of affairs: the age of “laughing out loud” is over. The book is rounded out with an interview of the artist by Swiss curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen.
