This book provides a "birds eye" view of social change in France during the "long seventeenth century" from 1589-1715. One of the most dynamic phases of French history, it covers the reigns of the first three Bourbon kings, Henri IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV. The author explores the upheavals in French society during this period through an examination of the bonds which tied various classes and groupings together: including rank, honour, and reputation; family, household and kinship; faith and the Church; and state and obedience to the King. Acting as a social glue against instability and fragmentation, in periods of great transformation some of these social solidarities are eroded whilst new ones emerge. Sharon Kettering shows how nuclear family ties emerged at the expense of extended kinship ties, while traditional rural ties were eroded by a combination of demographic crisis and agricultural stagnation. Urban ties of neighbourhood, sociability and work increased with rapid urbanisation. By 1715, France had become a more peaceful and civilised place, and this book discusses some of the reasons why.

"It took all of two paragraphs for me to fall head-over-heels in love with this story. Naive, plucky Margot was perfection, New York City brimmed loud and clear from the pages, and I absolutely adored the love story. I'll be thinking about this one for a while."--Jenna Evans Welch, New York Times bestselling author of Love & Gelato A charming, high-energy romance in the city that never sleeps about a girl who can't wait to be a part of Manhattan's restaurant scene--and find the boy she fell for last summer. Perfect for fans of Emily in Paris Welcome to New York. . . . He's been waiting for you. Margot hasn't been able to stop thinking about Zach, the dreamy American boy she met one magical night in Paris. In an instant, they fell head over heels in love and spent the perfect evening ensemble--sealed with a kiss and a promise: if the universe wants them to be together, fate will find a way. Flash forward one year later: Margot has finished high school and is newly arrived in New York, ready to roll up her chef's-coat sleeves in Manhattan's bustling restaurant scene, celebrate her father's upcoming wedding . . . and reconnect with Zach. But a lot can happen in a year, and promises made in the shadows of the Eiffel Tower look different in the neon glow of the Big Apple. Margot spends the summer desperate to find Zach and enlists the help of Ben, the sweet line cook at her restaurant. Margot is convinced she found her soul mate that night in Paris . . . but what if the universe has a different plan? Anything's possible in New York City. Especially l'amour, American-style.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - From the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Spool of Blue Thread--a funny, joyful, brilliantly perceptive journey deep into one Baltimore family's foibles, from a boyfriend with a red Chevy in the 1950s up to a longed-for reunion with a grandchild. "A quietly subversive novel, tackling fundamental assumptions about womanhood, motherhood and female aging." --The New York Times Book Review The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common. Their youngest, David, is already intent on escaping his family's orbit, for reasons none of them understand. Yet, as these lives advance across decades, the Garretts' influences on one another ripple ineffably but unmistakably through each generation. Full of heartbreak and hilarity, French Braid is classic Anne Tyler: a stirring, uncannily insightful novel of tremendous warmth and humor that illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives, the impossibility of breaking free from those who love us, and how close--yet how unknowable--every family is to itself.

French Public Opinion and the Transition to the Single Currency System 1981-2002
The author describes in this publcation, the institutional framework of the European Union, the existing currency systems, and provides a review of the Maastricht treaty ratification debates. He used the op-ed of Franco-German finance ministers published in the International Herald Tribune, to relate the desire of the two countries to work on the new currency creation, as well as describing the preparation of corporate France. The events to mark the new change over as reported in national newspapers and the pubic information campaign to turn millions of people into users of the Euro were well narrated.

French Quarter Tales

Magic realism is a term that is often used to describe the fiction of such Latin American writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar and Jorge Luis Borges. Literary critics such as Seymour Menton have contended that it is also present in the art and literature of Germany, Italy, France and the United States after World War I. The stories in French Quarter Tales follow such a tradition by presenting unusual (and even supernatural) situations within very familiar settings. Professor Perez explores in these stories the boundaries between reality and the supernatural, love and hate, good and evil. In these tales the everyday meets the recondite and sometimes even the terrifying. Most of these postmodern short tales are left open and defy interpretation.

Sydney Bennett is back And her pursuit of perfection is alive and well. Na ve to the core, Sydney believed that when she finally married the man of her dreams, the hard part was over. Following a civil ceremony as a means to keep Louis from being deported, Sydney continues to plan the fairytale wedding that she had dreamed of since the age of five. Much to her chagrin, she discovers that her mother-in-law is planning what seems to be a rival wedding in France that SHE has been dreaming about for her only child since before he was born. Sydney had always heard that marriage was hard, but she thought that this was just a ruse that married couples portrayed in a bid to make single girls feel less desperate. But as the bills pile up and emotions run high, she realizes that there may just be some truth to this statement. And as she watches Louis' perfection fade away before her very eyes, she begins to wonder if she made a rash decision in marrying a man that she had known for a mere six months. With all of the obstacles that Sydney and Louis will encounter, will they be raising their glasses in celebration or watching their impulsive marriage crash and burn? One thing is for certain, Sydney and Louis Durand are headed for one hell of a toast...
