Korean is the seventh most commonly spoken language in the United States, and Korean heritage students-those with some proficiency in or a cultural connection to the language through family or community-make up a substantial portion of Korean learners at the college level. Many schools offer a separate heritage track for learning Korean, but until now there has been no textbook designed specifically for heritage learners as well as the increasing number of students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing intensive learning to build on their prior experience with Korean.Integrated Korean: Accelerated 1 and 2 directly address the linguistic needs and abilities of heritage and accelerated learners in a single academic year. Volume 1 presents lessons on thematically organized subjects, starting with familiar topics such as family, friends, daily routines, schoolwork, campus activities, dining out, and shopping. Volume 2 advances to more formal subjects beyond family and friends, such as travel, transportation, housing, holidays, lifestyles, careers, and Korean history and culture. Students approach the lessons with multilevel communicative classroom activities and reading materials with standards-based exercises and projects that not only address the particular language requirements of heritage learners, but also encourage them to participate more fully in their own family and community life. Each volume’s textbook and workbook offer authentic conversations and texts in both informal and formal contexts, structured tasks, and a wealth of interesting and relevant cultural content.Integrated Korean is a project of the Korean Language Education and Research Center (KLEAR) with the support of the Korea Foundation. In addition to the five-level Integrated Korean textbooks and workbooks, volumes include Korean Composition, Korean Language in Culture and Society, Korean Reader for Chinese Characters, Readings in Modern Korean Literature, A Resource for Korean Grammar Instruction, and Selected Readings in Korean.Audio files for Accelerated Korean may be downloaded in MP3 format at https://kleartextbook.com.

Offering balanced coverage of all major aspects of the field, this comprehensive volume provides the theoretical and practical information required for the development and manufacture of high-performance, energy-efficient LCDs. The third edition incorporates new technologies and applications throughout. Several brand-new chapters discuss topics such as the application of Oxide TFTs and high mobility circuits, high-mobility TFT-semiconductors in LCD addressing, liquid crystal displays in automotive instrument clusters and touch-screen systems, and the use of ultra-high-resolution LCD panels in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) displays. This practical reference and guide: Provides a complete account of commercially relevant LCD technologies, including their physics, mathematical descriptions, and electronic addressingFeatures extensively revised and expanded information, including more than 150 pages of new materialIncludes the addition of Oxide Transistors and their increased mobilities, the advances of fringe field switching and an overview of automotive displaysPresents quantitative results with full equation sets, their derivation, and tabular summaries of related information sets
Leading Features of Korean Education

Korean students have continuously performed well in reading and mathematics in international tests for more than ten years. However, the more critical reviewers both in and outside of Korea have pointed out negative sides of Korean education, such as shadow education, as the main reason behind the consistent high performance. In the mean time, educational experts and policy makers, particularly from developing countries, are interested to learn about the leading features of the Korean educational system and policies that contribute to the "success" of Korean education. Such differing views, namely, a constructive approach to learn positive aspects of the system and a critical approach to focus on its weaknesses should find a better balance for concrete understanding of the national system. Thus, it is essential for academic scholars best versed in Korean education to collectively present the real features of Korean education, to enable readers to construct more neutral and scientific perspectives toward Korean education, particularly in terms of the contributions Korean education has made toward national development.
How Can So Many Be Wrong?

How Can So Many Be Wrong?

Of the 347 U.S. false criminal convictions overturned so far through DNA testing 73% were based on erroneous eyewitness testimony. How could so many eyewitnesses be wrong? How Can So Many Be Wrong? answers that question. The analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court eyewitness cases shows that most the Court’s holdings were likely in error. The Court—like the judges and juries in the courts below—greatly overestimated the reliability of eyewitnesses against the defendants and decided their convictions based on unsound evidence. The facts of the cases and personalities of the defendants are engaging, even compelling. An expert is needed to inform the judge and the jury of the circumstances to consider when weighing the testimony of the witness against the facts of the case. It is a clear violation of Due Process to deny the defendant the provision of an expert witness in all cases where the eyewitness testimony lacks corroboration Research assessing both cross-examination and jury instructions makes it abundantly clear that neither can effectively provide courts with the counterintuitive information necessary to evaluate eyewitness reliability. Denial of an expert is denial of Due Process.

AMPK-S6K1 Signaling Pathway as a Target for Treating Hepatic Insulin Resistance

AMPK-S6K1 Signaling Pathway as a Target for Treating Hepatic Insulin Resistance

Hepatic insulin resistance and altered insulin metabolism, as characterised by the desensitisation of hepatic parenchymal cells to insulin, play a role in the pathogenesis of liver disease, particularly resulting in steatosis and steatohepatitis. By the same token, type II diabetic patients are at higher risk for developing liver diseases, including steatosis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. On the other hand, established liver disease from any cause leads to glucose intolerance and peripheral insulin resistance systemically. The link between insulin resistance and liver pathology reviewed in this book suggests that insulin resistance is closely related with a variety of liver diseases. Recent evidence indicates that the AMP activating protein kinase (AMPK) in conjunction with p70 ribosomal S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) serves as a key signalling pathway regulating insulin-dependent physiological functions; thus, this pathway serves as a target for the therapy of diseases associated with insulin resistance. In this chapter, the regulatory role of the AMPK-S6K1 pathway is discussed in terms of enhancing insulin receptor signalling with insulin receptor substrate-1/2 and phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase activity, which may contribute to preventing and/or treating insulin resistance in the liver.
Potential Game Theory

Potential Game Theory

This book offers a thorough examination of potential game theory and its applications in radio resource management for wireless communications systems and networking. The book addresses two major research goals: how to identify a given game as a potential game, and how to design the utility functions and the potential functions with certain special properties in order to formulate a potential game. After proposing a unifying mathematical framework for the identification of potential games, the text surveys existing applications of this technique within wireless communications and networking problems found in OFDMA 3G/4G/WiFi networks, as well as next-generation systems such as cognitive radios and dynamic spectrum access networks.Professionals interested in understanding the theoretical aspect of this specialized field will find Potential Game Theory a valuable resource, as will advanced-level engineering students. It paves the way for extensive and rigorous research exploration on a topic whose capacity for practical applications is vast but not yet fully exploited.
