This book is long overdue documentation on automatic wristwatches from countries other than Switzerland. These watches were always considered superior micro-mechanical products and posed a challenge to technicians. It was only a question of time, before the collectors' interest in these watches expanded from Swiss watches to those of other origins. A total of 123 watches are illustrated in three different views, through over 400 photographs in total, and each are described in detail. A price guide is provided for collectors.
For the first time, this richly illustrated book offers a comprehensive, detailed examination of the legendary Messerschmitt Bf 110, Me 210, and Me 410 series. By 1935 the Bf 109 had made Messerschmitt the leading manufacturer of fighter aircraft in Germany. The twin-engined Bf 110 followed on its heels in 1936, a type the Luftwaffe took on in large numbers as a long-range fighter, heavy-fighter, fighter-bomber, night-fighter and reconnaissance platform. As its successor, Messerschmitt developed the better performing Me 210, which flew for the first time in 1939. But this airframe soon began manifesting serious design flaws, and accidents with the Me 210 quickly started piling up due to the type’s questionable flight handling characteristics. The Luftwaffe refused to accept any more aircraft as a result, and at a stroke the type’s overzealous full scale production ground to a halt. More powerful engines and a number of design changes saw this aircraft produced from 1943 to 1944 under the designation of Me 410, and as such the type gave an excellent accounting of itself in service with the Luftwaffe.
Gliders formed a special category of aircraft within the Luftwaffe. While other aircraft types were used for many years, as a rule gliders were conceived for short service lives, in some cases just a single mission. The purpose of the glider, most of which were built using the simplest materials, was to deposit soldiers and materiel behind enemy lines undetected. In this book the various types used by the Luftwaffe in World War II, and their development are described in detail – from military gliders for a few soldiers to large-capacity gliders capable of transporting tanks.

In this first-of-its-kind treatment, Heinz Tschachler offers an account of Edgar Allan Poe's relation to the world of banking and money in antebellum America. He contends that Poe gave the full force of his censure to the acrimonious debates about America's money, Andrew Jackson's bank war, the panic of 1837 and the ensuing depression, and the nation's inability to furnish a "sound and uniform currency." Poe's attitude is overt in his early satires, more subdued in "The Gold-Bug," and almost an undercurrent in writings that enter into and historicize the discovery of gold in California. In Poe's writings much is concealed, though his art also reveals while it conceals, in this instance, a deep felt desire for an authority that would guarantee a measure of permanence and continuity to the nation' s currency. That kind of currency was finally furnished by Abraham Lincoln (both were born in 1809; Poe died in 1849), at one time a dedicated reader of Poe's tales and sketches. Wielding his "power of regulation," Lincoln came to save the Union not just militarily but also economically. Under him, the United States government finally provided the kind of "sound and uniform currency" that Poe in his writings could only name and rehearse.

In the last two decades, the field of inverse problems has certainly been one of the fastest growing areas in applied mathematics. This growth has largely been driven by the needs of applications both in other sciences and in industry. In Chapter 1, we will give a short overview over some classes of inverse problems of practical interest. Like everything in this book, this overview is far from being complete and quite subjective. As will be shown, inverse problems typically lead to mathematical models that are not well-posed in the sense of Hadamard, i.e., to ill-posed problems. This means especially that their solution is unstable under data perturbations. Numerical meth ods that can cope with this problem are the so-called regularization methods. This book is devoted to the mathematical theory of regularization methods. For linear problems, this theory can be considered to be relatively complete and will be de scribed in Chapters 2 - 8. For nonlinear problems, the theory is so far developed to a much lesser extent. We give an account of some of the currently available results, as far as they might be of lasting value, in Chapters 10 and 11. Although the main emphasis of the book is on a functional analytic treatment in the context of operator equations, we include, for linear problems, also some information on numerical aspects in Chapter 9.
