Protein Bioinformatics

Protein Bioinformatics

Genomics and bioinformatics play an increasingly important and transformative role in medicine, society and agriculture. The mapping of the human genome has revealed 35,000 or so genes which might code for more than one protein, resulting in 100,000 proteins for the humans alone. Since proteins are attractive targets for developing drugs, efforts are now underway to map sequences and assign functions to many novel proteins. This book takes the novel approach to cover both the sequence and structure analysis of proteins in one volume and from an algorithmic perspective. Key features of the book include: Provides a comprehensive introduction to the analysis of protein sequence and structure analysis.Takes an algorithmic approach, relying on computational methods rather than theoretical.Provides an integrated presentation of theory, examples, exercises and applications.Includes coverage of both protein structure, and sequence, analysis.Accessible enough for biologists, yet rigorous enough for computer scientists and mathematicians.Supported by a Web site featuring exercises, solutions, images, and computer programs. Shapes and Shells in Nuclear Structure

Shapes and Shells in Nuclear Structure

Ingemar Ragnarsson; Sven Gvsta Nilsson

Cambridge University Press
2005
pokkari
There are a variety of models which can be used to study nuclear structure and dynamics. This book gives a comprehensive overview of these various models, concentrating in particular on a description of deformed and rotating nuclei. Following a treatment of the semi-empirical mass formula and nuclear stability, the liquid-drop and simple shell models are introduced and described. The spherical nuclear one-particle potential is introduced and developed to cover the case of deformed nuclei. The latter chapters of the book are devoted to discussions of barrier penetration, fast nuclear rotation, nucleon-nucleon interactions and the pairing interaction. Many problems and solutions are included, which help to illustrate key concepts. The book will be invaluable to graduate students of nuclear physics, and to anyone engaged in research in this field.

Luther and World Mission

Luther and World Mission

Ingemar Oberg

CONCORDIA PUBLISHING HOUSE LTD

sidottu
This book provides a new interpretation of Luther and mission and serves to "rehabilitate" the reformer in modern missiological studies. berg argues that Luther fully embraced the missionary task to the world. Because Luther was foremost a teacher and pastor, his writings interact with Scripture and address current, local situations. Yet in Luther's Bible exposition, pamphlets, and treatises, a clear and passionate commitment to the Gospel and world mission emerges. Shaped by a critical attitude toward Luther, past scholars have misinterpreted the reformer. An honest portrait recognizes Luther's subtle but solid contribution to evangelical missiology. In Luther and World Mission, Luther emerges as a mission-minded servant of the Gospel who laid the foundation for a Lutheran theology of mission.

Today about 85 per cent of the world population of Muslims live in areas outside the Arab world, and due to population growth, missionary endeavours and migration, the number of Muslims in these areas is rising rapidly. This volume presents the spread and character of Islam in many non-Arab countries, focusing particularly on the contemporary situation. The book deals with the great variety and complexity that characterize Islam outside the Arab world, with Sufism (the predominant form of Islam in most non-Arab Muslim countries), and with the growing significance of Islamism which challenges secularism and Sufi forms of Islam.

This groundbreaking book on shorebirds examines the taxonomy, appearance, behavior, ecology, and conservation of Golden and Grey Plovers, and compares and contrasts their natural history and biogeography. It gives detailed accounts on all aspects of their lifestyle including feeding, mating, parental care, moults, migration, and avoidance of predators. The authors' first hand experiences add to its value. Tundra Plovers explores the differences in plumage, vocalizations, habitat use, breeding, movements, and food. The connections between phylogeny, biogeography, and behavior will be of interest because the authors have focussed on the differences between the sexes as well as the four species. Byrkjedal has also contributed all of the wonderful color and line illustrations. More than 40 photographs, 150 tables and figures, and many other embellishments complete this definitive book. A comprehensive overview of the history of bird keeping across the world. This book discusses the history of aviculture and the cultural extent of keeping and raising birds in captivity for pleasure, companion, ornamental reasons, religious causes or various economic or practical purposes. Since the dawn of mankind, humans have kept birds in captivity. Several species are truly domesticated, while others have simply been bred in captivity for many generations. Today bird-keeping for pleasure appears to be declining in the West, mostly due to bird protection and growing awareness about conservation issues. Although aviculture has had, and still has a deep impact on human beings, it remains a neglected field within humanities and social sciences. Relatively little is published about the cultural and historical aspects of aviculture. This anthology is intended for a general audience of readers and it shows various aspects of keeping birds in captivity for pleasure, ornamental reasons or practical purposes around the world. It also deals with the great variety and complexity of the practice of keeping birds, and the specific cultures which have developed around it. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the questions we focus on in the book, together with a historic overview from prehistory to early twenty-first century, including pet birds among natives in South America, Southeast Asia and Africa, sailors and their parrots, birds in religious rituals, primitive domesticates in various peasant societies, etc. The other chapters offer descriptive case studies in pre-modern and early modern ways of bird-keeping in various historical contexts. Modern aviculture in zoological gardens is discussed and specific bird categories within twentieth-century aviculture are described in some chapters. We encounter sophisticated bird-keeping in pre-Columbian societies, Norse trade with falcons, the European craze for songbirds, practices with captive birds used in human habitations to keep vermin under control, and how avicultural expertise is used for trying to save vanishing species by breeding them in captivity.Together these topics illustrate the great variety and complexities of bird-keeping practice. The authors are specialists in aviculture and most of them hail from the countries about which they write. This book bridges the disciplines of cultural anthropology, ethnobiology, history, natural history and ornithology and is intended to benchmark the development of the subject for a broader audience, which until now has had few possibilities to become acquainted with it.

Stochastic Modeling in Broadband Communications Systems

Stochastic Modeling in Broadband Communications Systems

Mathematical methods based on the theory of stochastic processes have long been used effectively in telephone traffic modeling. Today's modern network traffic, which is distinctly different from traditional voice traffic, generates challenging mathematical and statistical problems. Stochastic Modeling in Broadband Communications Systems provides a concise overview of stochastic models and mathematical techniques for solving these problems and enhances readers' overall understanding of communications systems. The book also presents an excellent introduction, particularly for students and professionals in probability and applied mathematics, to a huge area of interesting problems and models arising from modern developments in broadband channel transmission systems. The author's clear presentation is based on sound mathematical reasoning, and he has taken special care to make the material easily accessible to readers unable to devote excessive amounts of time to rigorous mathematical detail and generality.Topics include models ranging over different time scales of calls, bursts, and cells; different protocol layers for transport, control, and applications; mechanisms for queuing, collisions, delay, and loss; and the effects of buffering, retransmission, multiplexing, and traffic control. Comprehensive exercises are provided at the end of each chapter.

The Wealth of Generations

The Wealth of Generations

Ingemar Alexander Anderson

Our capitalistic system's dirty little secret is that capital tends to grow much faster than salaries and wages. So, people working for money have been losing the race to building wealth against those who use financial capital to create wealth. The gap between individuals leveraging financial capital and workers is growing bigger each year. Spurred by technological advances, this trend is now even accelerating, and the value of skilled labor is declining further each year. Consequently, our precious democracy seems to turn into an oligarchy. Power would then rest with a small group of people distinguished by wealth, education, corporate, political, or military control. Our society would then be controlled by a few families who pass their influence from one generation to the next. Is this what we want?Today, the fundamental principle of capitalism, the concept of skilled labor, is at stake. Is it possible that we can all pass wealth from one generation to another? Can we manage a paradigm shift from nation-centered capitalism to a shared economy based on the Wealth of Generations by enabling all workers to become capitalists-sophisticated investors? The answer is yes This book casts a positive outlook into the future by suggesting using artificial intelligence and other technologies to make us all capitalists, reaping equitable returns.
