Jason Langer (*1967) lived on a kibbutz in Israel from the age of six to eleven, formative years which have shaped him to this day, so when he was invited to Berlin in 2008 to photograph the city, he met the suggestion with trepidation. Associating the German capital with its 20th century atrocities, he saw it as a cold, unfriendly place. Even so he accepted, and from 2009-2013 he explored the city mostly on foot, with two film cameras and black and white film. He photographed Berlin with an eye towards places where Jewish people were deported or killed but also took it as an opportunity to confront and update his preconceived notions and find a new narrative of contemporary Germany and the German people. Photographing the streets, people he met on the way, and acquaintances who grew to be friends, he tracked traces of the Holocaust, the Cold War, and imagined the freedom and creative expression of the roaring '20s.

Artists II is the second volume of Jason Schmidt's ongoing photographic documentation of today's most significant artists. From young to old creative forces, emerging to career-peaking, world-famous or as yet unknown, Schmidt's images, captured over a period of twelve years, are an incisive look into the art world of today. Artists II depicts 166 artists, including John Baldessari, Ai Weiwei, Glenn Ligon and Cindy Sherman, in their studios or work environments, showing the practitioners in their most intimate moments--in the process of creation. A revealing text by each artist accompanies his or her portrait; some are literal descriptions of the encounter, others are poetic or enigmatic. Situated between portraiture and landscape, Schmidt's photographs show art and artist in constant transformation, and form a comprehensive archive of contemporary artistic practice.

A glimpse inside the mind of Jason Rhoades, through a facsimile edition of the visionary artist’s sketchbook Illastrations is a facsimile of an undated sketchbook of drawings by Jason Rhoades that he and his wife, the artist Rachel Khedoori, gifted to their friend and patron Iwan Wirth. A leading figure of the 1990s international art world, Rhoades was a world builder, an outlier. Like his art, the book is a dynamic construction designed to systematically explore and communicate life’s big questions. It serves as a guide to Rhoades’s visionary work: a collection of didactic cartoons, organized by keyword, that illustrate key concepts, materials, works of art, and personal references, including “abstraction,” “curator,” “donut,” “Marcel Duchamp,” “unfair.” Presented in a slipcase and bound as what feels like an art supply sketchbook, Illastrations is an object to treasure, encapsulating the playfulness of a Californian cowboy who never relinquished his sense of punk practicality.

Contemporary ideals about what constitutes beauty have gradually become more homogenized due to the widespread popularity of shared digital experiences. Before the emergence of the internet, application of makeup for the majority of non-celebrity civilians was a process of untutored, organic self-experimentation. Photographer Jason Hetherington and make-up artist Mel Arter debunk the modern-day fashion industry bias towards airbrushed perfection with their collaborative insight entitled, Elements. The book presents an exhilarating, uninhibited study of cosmetics, landscape and light – taking a hedonistic trip to a bygone era of analogue film photography and bold, spontaneous artistry inspired by natural, environmental forms. Celebrating the powerful relationship between human and earth, Elements is an iconic ode to a time when makeup represented freedom, ritual and instinctive creativity. Their work has been published across international fashion magazines and beauty campaigns worldwide.

The first critical companion to the world of multi-Tony Award-winning American musical theatre practitioner Jason Robert Brown, hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer). Rather than taking a show-by-show approach, Jason Robert Brown: A Critical Companion is structured according to topics of analysis, moving through three parts: Techniques, Identities, and Adaptation. All of Robert Brown's main musicals are covered, including the song cycle Songs For a New World; chamber musical The Last 5 Years; original musicals Parade and Mr Saturday Night through to adaptions such as The Bridges of Madison County and Urban Cowboy. The book fuses together narratological analysis with musicological analysis, considering the influences on Brown’s music and the way that words and music portray protagonists, narrative, relationships and identities across his works. The final chapter gives comparative analysis to garner a portrait of Jason Robert Brown as an artist. Published in Methuen Drama's Musical Theatre Critical Companion series this book combines traditional essays with primary research and practitioner interviews that offer a fresh look at key moments of musical theatre as a form.
