Mission as God's Spiral of Renewal

Mission as God's Spiral of Renewal

Kenneth R Ross

In this remarkable volume covering diverse subjects, in a span of three decades, Kenneth R. Ross articulates his views on the meaning and practice of Christian mission and challenges the binary view of mission that prevailed before the 1950s. He further reflects on Scotland's experiences in the world-wide Christian mission and demonstrates the centrality of Africa in any discourse on Christianity. This volume is invaluable in its argument for a rethinking of Christian mission especially in relation to the West, which is now a new frontier for Christian mission. The book will be immensely beneficial to students of missiology and general readers who are interested in the subject of Christian Mission.

This is the first attempt to comprehend the whole of Malawi's church history in a single volume. The focus of this book is about documenting the religious experience which was at the centre of founding the new nation of Malawi as we have come to know it. The book strikes a balance in covering issues pertaining to both mission activities and African agency. In many instances interesting pieces of evidence have been marshalled to corroborate or emphasize some of the conclusions reached.

Many scholars have noted the importance of Christianity in Malawi and have written on the social, economic and political influence of the Christian faith. What is harder to find is a study of the nature of the faith, and an analysis of the inner logic of the religious consciousness which developed in Malawi as its peoples responded to the Christian message. By bringing forward a selection of key primary sources this book provides the opportunity to read the story of Malawian Christianity "from the inside." It allows some Malawian Christians to speak for themselves so that church history might be formed by listening directly and critically to voices from the past. This revised and expanded edition includes all the primary texts that appeared in the original 1996 version as well as six additional documents that extend the range of the collection.

Malawi's first two Presbyterian ministers, Harry Kambwiri Matecheta and Stephen Kundecha, were ordained in March 1911. Ecclesiastically, this made them fully equal with their European fellow-ministers. There were, however, subtle and not-so-subtle racial codes that reminded them that they were expected to occupy a subordinate position. This Occasional Paper explores how they discovered their identity and vocation in a challenging context.
Mission, Race and Colonialism in Malawi
The first intellectual biography of Alexander Hetherwick, a key figure in Scotland-Malawi relations. Mission, race and colonialism were three forces shaping Malawi's history during the early years of the 20th century. They found a concentrated meeting point in the life of Scottish missionary Alexander Hetherwick, who led Blantyre Mission from 1898 to 1928. This book presents a fresh assessment of this towering figure in Malawi's history, contesting the scholarly consensus that Hetherwick betrayed the early ideals of Blantyre Mission by compromising too much with the colonial system that was in force during his leadership. Kenneth R. Ross assesses the pervasive influence of colonialism, from which Hetherwick was not exempt, and traces the ways in which he resisted such influence through his relentless commitment to the interests of the African community and the inspiration he found in the emergence of the African church.Kenneth R. Ross is Professor of Theology and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Zomba Theological University, and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria.

"Studies on the history of the Blantyre Mission in Malawi often suggest that 1881 marked a turning point in the mission's tradition, following a crisis triggered by a series of scandals that resulted in the dismissal of its top leadership. Kenneth Ross challenges this interpretation, arguing that while a crisis did occur, it did not significantly disrupt the mission's work. Ross maintains that there was a strong element of continuity between the earlier and later phases of the mission, largely sustained by African missionaries trained for the work, a core group of dedicated missionary personnel, and female staff who played a vital role in maintaining the Mission's stability. Through a thorough and detailed examination of archival records, Ross's work offers a fresh and deeper understanding of the Blantyre Mission and its enduring influence - insights that previous accounts have not fully captured." Gift Wasambo Kayira, Head of the Department of History, Archaelogy and Heritage Studies, University of Malawi."In this book Kenneth Ross enables readers to step into the footsteps of our ancestors and to closely experience the travails they endured. From this treasure trove we can discover where we are coming from, where we are, and where we want to be tomorrow. As Blantyre Synod marks its 150th anniversary in 2026, I commend this volume to all Presbyterians and to all who cherish our Malawian history". Malawian Missionaries in Tanzania's Southern Highlands 1916-1928
Opportunities for Malawians to demonstrate their leadership skills were severely limited during the colonial period. Even the Missions, like Livingstonia and Blantyre, that provided a high level of education often frustrated their graduates by requiring them to work under European supervision on an indefinite basis. This study shows how some early Malawian church leaders took advantage of an unexpected opportunity that arose during the First World War. European missionaries were not allowed to enter Tanzania, but African staff were permitted to cross the border to help the Tanzanian churches to regroup after the devastation caused by the war. For such remarkable figures as Yoram Mphande, George Nyasulu and Jones and Catherine Chikoga, this was a chance to show their mettle.

This book is a collection of essays written in the early 1990s. Some are an attempt to think theologically about the social and political changes and challenges that Malawi was navigating during those years. Others are critically reflecting on the nature and content of the Christian faith as it was coming to expression in an African context. The essays are a plea for relevancy and contextuality in Christian praxis and theological reflection in Malawi and, indeed, in Africa as a whole.

Foreword by Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean, Simon Wiesenthal Center A real-life adventure story told by a New York Times bestselling author and war correspondent who reveals how he became a hostage, an arms dealer, and an Israeli spy. And the Rest Is History takes readers on a traveling circus from Paris to Beirut, Baghdad, and beyond, introducing them to spies and terrorists, arms dealers and crooks, and along the way reveals a few surprises about the secret underbelly of recent history you won’t find in WikiLeaks. This book pinpoints precisely when the era of “fake news” actually began in America, and will change the way you think about journalism and journalists. It includes: • riveting testimony of the author’s torture and born-again experience as a hostage in a Beirut cellar; • unusual insight into the beginnings of the Iran–Contra scandal; • eyewitness reporting from the battlefields of the Middle East; • the inside scoop on Saddam Hussein’s WMD programs; • astonishing stories of French government dirty tricks, the intelligence underworld, Israeli hostage negotiations, and the real-life escapades of a Soviet sleeper agent. And the Rest Is History is a reporter’s journey from Left-Bank leftist to born-again Christian conservative. But most of all it’s a rollicking good read full of unusual characters, places, and events you will never hear about on the evening news. “Ken Timmerman is a superb investigative reporter—and old school—which means he does his research. His behind-the-scenes adventures in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Israel, and even France are a terrific read for those of us who share his passion for tracking down the facts, not molding the facts to a ‘narrative.’” —Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute and NY Times bestselling author of Clinton Cash and Profiles in Corruption “I have followed for some time your excellent reporting on the Mid-East. You consistently provide insights and facts nowhere else available to the public. Your professionalism and persistence make a great contribution to our understanding, to the public debate, and ultimately to our national security.” —R. James Woolsey, former director, Central Intelligence Agency “I have spent my life tracking the murderers of yesterday. Mr. Timmerman is tracking the murderers of tomorrow.” —Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, introducing the author to an audience in Paris, France, in 2002
