Summertime Blues in the Vast Old North: A Book of Poetry by Jonathan Sebastian Maxwell Johnson
I wrote these poems in the summer of 2015 by hand in a little black sketch book. They are mostly random but somehow stick together. A lot of them were written in the early morning after work. There is no rhyme or reason to them except for that which you the reader creates. Thank you for taking the time to read this work.

Five of Maxwell's PapersJames Clerk MaxwellJames Clerk Maxwell FRS FRSE (13 June 1831 - 5 November 1879) was a Scottish scientist in the field of mathematical physics. His most notable achievement was to formulate the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, bringing together for the first time electricity, magnetism, and light as manifestations of the same phenomenon. Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism have been called the "second great unification in physics" after the first one realised by Isaac Newton. With the publication of A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field in 1865, Maxwell demonstrated that electric and magnetic fields travel through space as waves moving at the speed of light. Maxwell proposed that light is an undulation in the same medium that is the cause of electric and magnetic phenomena. The unification of light and electrical phenomena led to the prediction of the existence of radio waves.Maxwell helped develop the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, a statistical means of describing aspects of the kinetic theory of gases. He is also known for presenting the first durable colour photograph in 1861 and for his foundational work on analysing the rigidity of rod-and-joint frameworks (trusses) like those in many bridges.Table of ContentsOn the Unequal Sensibility of the Foramen Centrale to Light of different ColoursOn the Theory of Compound Colours with reference to Mixtures of Blue and Yellow LightOn an Instrument to illustrate Poinsot's Theory of RotationAddress to the Mathematical and Physical Sections of the British AssociationIntroductory Lecture on Experimental Physics
The Sons of Maxwell Perkins

In April 1938 F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote to his editor Maxwell Perkins, ""What a time you've had with your sons, Max - Ernest gone to Spain, me gone to Hollywood, Tom Wolfe reverting to an artistic hill-billy."" As the sole literary editor with name recognition among students of American literature, Perkins remains permanently linked to Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Wolfe in literary history and literary myth. Their relationships, which were largely epistolary, play out in the 221 letters Matthew J. Bruccoli has assembled in this volume. The collection documents the extent of the fatherly forbearance, attention, and encouragement the legendary Scribners editor gave to his authorial sons. The correspondence portrays his ability to juggle the requirements of his three geniuses. Perkins wanted his stars to be close friends and wrote to each of them about the others. They responded in kind: Fitzgerald on Hemingway and Wolfe, Wolfe on Fitzgerald, Hemingway on Wolfe and Fitzgerald. The novelists also wrote to each other. But contrary to Perkins's hopes for a brotherhood among them, their letters express rivalry and suspicion rather than affinity. Perkins encouraged the writers professionally b
Conversations with William Maxwell

Conversations with William Maxwell collects thirty-eight interviews, public speeches, and remarks that span five decades of the esteemed novelist and New Yorker editor's career. The interviews collectively address the entirety of Maxwell's literary work--with in-depth discussion of his short stories, essays, and novels including They Came Like Swallows, The Folded Leaf, and the American Book award-winning So Long, See You Tomorrow--as well as his forty-year tenure as a fiction editor working with such luminaries as John Updike, John Cheever, Eudora Welty, Vladimir Nabokov, and J.D. Salinger. Maxwell's words spoken before a crowd, some previously unpublished, pay moving tribute to literary friends and mentors, and offer reflections on the artistic life, the process of writing, and his Midwestern heritage. All retain the reserved poignancy of his fiction. The volume publishes for the first time the full transcript of Maxwell's extensive interviews with his biographer and, in an introduction, correspondence with writers including Updike and Saul Bellow, which enlivens the stories behind his interviews and appearances.

James Clerk MaxwellJames Clerk Maxwell was a brilliant mathematician and scientist, but his impact on this world goes even deeper than that. Maxwell singlehandedly overturned what was believed to be fact with a whole new outlook on fundamental aspects of the universe. Maxwell is often credited as one of the first pioneers of quantum physics and rightly so because it was Maxwell who envisioned particles such as electrons spinning inside an electric current before anyone else had so much as guessed that such a thing might be possible. Inside you will read about...✓ Early Life and Loss✓ The World's First Color Photograph✓ Maxwell's Equations✓ The Cavendish Laboratory✓ Illness and DeathAnd much more The rarefied scientific mind of James Clerk Maxwell has left us with a lasting legacy of incredible innovations in thought that still affect us to this very day. Read this book in order to get a full grasp of just what kind of enlightening fire this nineteenth-century Prometheus has gifted all of humanity with.

Perspectives on Peter Maxwell Davies

Perspectives on Peter Maxwell Davies

"As a composer one forgets, in time, the fine detail of composition processes which produced past work... it must be left to scholars to recreate, slowly and painstakingly, earlier creative processes." Peter Maxwell Davies. In the eight essays presented here, leading scholars of the music of Peter Maxwell Davies explore some of the composer's creative processes. David Roberts, Peter Owens and Richard McGregor examine Davies's employment of pitch-class sets and other models evident in his sketch material, while Joel Lester looks at the serial elements that produce structure and effect in the work Ave Maris Stella. The political, literary and musical influences evident in the 1987 opera Resurrection and in subsequent orchestral works come under scrutiny from John Warnaby. Davies's use of older dramatic forms and ritual is the focus of Michael Burden's examination of his music theatre. The composer's own descriptions of his compositional process contain distinctly modernist overtones as Arnold Whittall suggests in the concluding essay in the volume. The sustained textural multiplicity evident in much of Davies's music points to this modernism. It is a multiplicity mirrored in the variety of approaches taken by the commentators in this volume. The differing points of view on offer complement and contrast each other, allowing the reader to appreciate the different levels on which Davies's music works.

Written by leading experts in this field, this proceedings volume originates from a workshop held in Toulouse on March 1–2, 2023, organized by the ESIM European project (Energy Storage Inside Molecule(s)). The book explores the intersection and convergence of various perspectives, disciplines, and research areas related to a modern version of the Maxwell demon at the nanoscale. It presents interdisciplinary perspectives on topics such as intramolecular thermodynamics and single molecule motive power and overviews the realm of single objects, be it atoms or molecules, while also emphasizing on theoretical and experimental approaches, with or without the presence of supporting surfaces. Notably, this comprehensive collection represents the first instance where such intertwined contributions on diverse versions of the Maxwell demon are discussed within the context of the nanoscale. It is of great use to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers who are interested in single molecule mechanics.
