Oliver St John Gogarty was called by Yeats ‘one of the great lyric poets of the age'. Asquith thought Gogarty the wittiest man in London. His brilliant conversation was said to have the flavour of Wilde's, and exemplified the rich Dublin talk of his time. Gogarty was also skilful surgeon, a senator, a playwright, a champion athlete and swimmer and author of two renowned books, As I Was Going Down Sackville Street and Tumbling in the Hay. He was the garrulous and flamboyant drinking companion of James Joyce, providing the character of Buck Mulligan for Ulysses, the exuberant and mocking wit who delighted George Moore, and a friend and inspiration to the man who was high priest of the Irish literary renaissance, William Butler Yeats. From his boisterous student days, through the time of the Irish Civil War, and in all his years as a successful surgeon and unrivalled conversationalist, Gogarty embodied the life of Dublin during one of its richest and most turbulent periods. Gogarty himself appointed Ulick O'Connor to be his biographer. O'Connor spent six years researching published and unpublished material, as well as collecting the reminiscences of Gogarty's many friends. The result is a surprising and intimate portrait of a great Irishman and a stirring period of Irish history.
Oliver Heaviside

Oliver Heaviside (1850-1925) was one of the great pioneers of electrical science. His ideas led to huge advances in communications and now form much of the bedrock of electrical engineering - every textbook and every college course bears his stamp. Despite having little formal education he created the mathematical tools that were to prove essential to the proper understanding and use of electricity. At first his ideas were thought to be outrageous and he had to battle long and hard against ignorance, prejudice and vested interests to get them accepted. Yet they are now so much a part of everyday electrical science that they are simply taken for granted and our great debt to him is rarely acknowledged. Caring nothing for social or mathematical conventions, he lived a fiercely independent life, much of the time close to poverty. His writings reveal a personality like no other and are laced with wickedly irreverent humour; he is by far the funniest author of scientific papers. Basil Mahon combines a compelling account of Heaviside's life with a powerful insight into his scientific thinking and the reasons for its enduring influence.

Born in 1917 in Bizana in the Eastern Cape, Oliver Reginald Tambo became Nelson Mandela's legal partner and a prominent member of the ANC's Youth League. Following the Sharpeville massacre in 1960, Tambo left South Africa to set up the ANC's international mission. As President of the ANC in exile, he led the fight against apartheid on both the diplomatic and military fronts. He died in 1993 on the eve of liberation. Tambo had a profound influence on the ANC during the difficult years of uncertainty, loneliness and homesickness in exile. His simplicity, his nurturing style, his genuine respect for all people seemed to bring out the best in them. This is the story of one of South Africa's great sons - 'the most loved leader', the Moses who led his people to the promised land but did not live to enter it. This superb biography is certain to win prizes.

A filmmaker and installation artist based in Toronto, Oliver Husain has called his pieces “attractive traps,” for the way in which they offer up an initial interpretation to the viewer which is eventually revealed to have been misleading. In a similar vein, Husain has inserted visual interruptions that interfere with the essays in this, his first monograph.

TASK documents a burgeoning phenomenon begun in 2002 by artist Oliver Herring. Herring developed TASK as a self-generating, improvisational gathering in which a community engages in a collaborative art-making event. Using cardboard, tape, aluminum foil, pipe cleaners, markers and other materials, participants follow a simple set of rules: write a task for someone to perform, then randomly select a task to perform yourself (e.g. “Use cardboard mailing tubes to make a symphony;” “Form a conga line;” “Create a crime scene” ). The cycle continues, task building upon task, as people share new ways to develop ideas and solve problems. This volume includes a detailed history of TASK by Herring; extensive photo-documentation of TASK parties and events in the U.S., Canada, England, France and Japan; statements by participants; instructions on how to organize a TASK party; and essays by curators/ organizers Ian Berry, Kendra Paitz and Kristen Hileman.
