The Ruler Portraits of Anglo-Saxon England

Catherine E Karkov

Analysis of a group of images of kingship and queenship from Anglo-Saxon England explores the implications of their focus on books, authorship and learning. Between the reign of Alfred in the late ninth century and the arrival of the Normans in 1066, a unique set of images of kingship and queenship was developed in Anglo-Saxon England, images of leadership that centred on books, authorship and learning rather than thrones, sword and sceptres. Focusing on the cultural and historical contexts in which these images were produced, this book explores the reasons for their development, and their meaning and functionwithin both England and early medieval Europe. It explains how and why they differ from their Byzantine and Continental counterparts, and what they reveal about Anglo-Saxon attitudes towards history and gender, as well as the qualities that were thought to constitute a good ruler. It is argued that this series of portraits, never before studied as a corpus, creates a visual genealogy equivalent to the textual genealogies and regnal lists that are so mucha feature of late Anglo-Saxon culture. As such they are an important part of the way in which the kings and queens of early medieval England created both their history and their kingdom. CATHERINE E. KARKOV is Professorof Art History at the University of Leeds.

A blip of prosperity at the turn of the 20th century brought American trout to Patagonia, then for a half-century they were forgotten to fight wars and build a nation. Rediscovered by fishermen a half-century later, the fish had grown to epic proportions. In Chasing Rumor, Cameron Chambers chronicles his modern-day pilgrimage to the rivers of Patagonia in pursuit of these legendary 20-pound trout. What started as a trip focused on catching fish became a love affair with the Patagonian landscape, environment, and, mostly, the people. From a business mogul turned B&B owner to a kid determined to save a local trout population, Chasing Rumor is at times the story of a handful of fishermen, and at other times a tale of enormous trout.

Lt. Plate and Daphne face a new mystery together that takes them back generations but find the answer cannot be categorized by time. The world is changing in the 1980s and the new generation is having to cope with the legacy of the old. Elites would like to forget the social ills of the past and proclaim the new social order has arrived. But the boast is premature. Intolerance and prejudice are major factors in the murder of an innocent woman who should have been without an enemy in the world. The Ruler of the Toys- second in the series"An in depth mystery that explores social change in the 1980s while being highly entertaining. Part of a series but not necessary to read them in sequence. More serious and thought provoking than the first, still enjoyable in the tradition of old fashioned mysteries." 1983 spin says the days of racial hatred are over. Yet prejudice leads to murder in a mystery which reaches back a century, finding the age old motives devaluing lives of some, while enhancing others are the same as ever. Innocents are the victims when sin becomes legal. Tamica was a threat to no one and would have little claim to notoriety if not for being the granddaughter of a living legend. Amelia Mattworks is 94 and beloved as an entertainer of color who withstood the bigotry of the early 20th century, though numerous tragedies cost her most of her family. In the eyes of her fans, even if her soap opera life did make good drama, Amelia did not deserve the heartbreaks of the past, and much less this compelling new tragedy in the winter of her days. But rather than compensate for the appalling treatment that the high society of the first half of the century meted out to her and her family, those in power in the second half are oblivious to Amelia's latest suffering, or patronizing at best, when she suddenly loses her only granddaughter to a murderer. Lt. Sinclair Plate, second ranking officer in the tiny police force in the community where Amelia lives, is shouldered with the responsibility of protecting the only surviving blood relative the famous diva apparently has left- the 16-year-old daughter of the victim, also the seemingly inexplicable target of the murderer. Surrounded by in-laws who are strangers, jealous competitors from the past, contemporary fortune hunters, and disloyal employees, the vulnerable Amelia, and her pregnant great-granddaughter, are encompassed in danger from all sides. The absence of motive for the murder and continuing threat is balanced with a plethora of suspects for the detective to choose from. They range from the famous- politicians, rights activists, sports figures, movie stars- to the ordinary- servants, security guards, medical and security personnel, even apparent drifters. Before he can expose the masquerade of the killer, Lt. Plate has to uncover and understand deep dark secrets of long vanished eras. Eager to delve into history with Lt. Plate, exploring superstitions and evils of ages gone by, is insurance agent Daphne Martin who has a secret agenda of her own. Plate and Daphne find sins of the past have long tentacles that reach far into their own times of the 1980s, and threaten to multiply in their future which, for the reader, is now. Before the end, this 1980s couple must make life and death choices in a world where good and evil have blurred and a wrong decision is fatal. Second in a series with the descendant of a 1900s law man and his insurance agent girlfriend. 350 pages in 12 Pt Times New Roman Font, 6 by 9 paperback.

The Ruler's Guide: China's Greatest Emperor and His Timeless Secrets of Success
In the classic tradition of Sun Tzu's The Art of War, here for the first time in English is the timeless wisdom of China's greatest emperor Tang Taizong (598-649 AD), which is still being studied more than 1,300 years later as an invaluable guide to leading and managing. Tang Taizong is arguably the greatest Emperor in Chinese history. In Asia, many historians rank him with such rulers as Augustus, Genghis Khan, and Napoleon. When he founded the Tang dynasty, Taizong was only twenty-eight years old, and his chief accomplishments were on the battlefield, where he personally slew 1,000 of the enemy. Ultimately, he would defeat the descendants of Attila the Hun, open up the Silk Road trading route, create a golden age of prosperity and cosmopolitan culture, preside over a society in which women enjoyed higher status, and allow Christianity and Islam into China for the first time as well as introduce Buddhism into Tibet. His dynasty would last 300 years. Here, author Chinghua Tang presents conversations between Taizong and his gifted advisers that reveal core aspects of leadership, among them: how to appraise oneself and assess others, how to enhance organizational effectiveness, how to compete with rivals, how to grow power and influence without losing the respect of others, how to learn from the rise and fall of predecessors, and how to craft one's legacy. An indispensable guide that is as relevant for a middle-manager, military commander, or athletic coach as for a school principal, political leader, or over-stressed parent, The Ruler's Guide doesn't just reveal the insights that have kept Taizong's legacy alive, it spells out how that wisdom is a match for today's fast-paced, ever changing world.

This is my third book of poems (the other two were Grief, Loneliness, and Redemption . . . sorta, and Modern Psalms: Poems for Those Who Mourn). These poems are about my struggle to find who I am after the death of my wife. They are the meanderings through the loss, of grief and sorrow that losing a loved one creates. Their lack of a straight path is the result of confusion, anger, and longing to find a new way to live. Did I find it? No, but the self is never complete. May these poems be of some small use to you in your loss, whatever it is.

This story will fulfil your ideas of what a really good, gripping detective story should be. We think that the standard set in the U. J. Sexton Blake stories cannot be equalled elsewhere-and we endeavour to justify that belief by printing nothing that falls shod of typical U. J. quality. This particular yarn, written by a man who has been on the spot and knows what he is talking about, is rather better than usual, if anything. We will not shout its praises; we will leave you to be the judge. If you think you can honestly recommend such yarns as this to your friends, please do so.
