Sentient bog bodies, living marionettes, deranged tramp clowns, fairies turned human, tooth fairies gone bad, shadowy figures on stilts... these and many other strange characters haunt the pages of this unique collection of fantasy and horror. "Jay Sturner's collection of stories, poems, prose poems, vignettes, and fables has much to recommend it. Inspired by the work of Lord Dunsany and other classic writers, yet also exhibiting vibrant originality, the highly diverse works in this book will take you out of our frenetic contemporary era and into realms of ethereal fantasy and clutching terror. And yet, pathos and poignancy are not absent."- S. T. Joshi, literary critic and leading figure in the study of weird and fantastic fiction "Jay Sturner has created a phantasmagorical assortment of surreal wonders, bone-chilling horrors, and intimate whimsies, each holding a mirror to our most hidden selves. I recommend this amazing collection of poetry and short fiction wholeheartedly."- David Lee Summers, author of Owl Dance and The Astronomer's Crypt

This is a book with a download to the album. BLACK BLACK BLACK is four men who have nothing to prove, thus allowing their music to pour forth uncompromised, undiluted and utterly ass-kicking. Featuring members of ex Cleveland Ohio heavy rock luminaries Disengage, Black Black Black converged in New York City, with intentions to inflict damage; this isnot music for the faint of heart. Their playing is lean, economical, no breath or gesture wasted. Live & on record, Black Black Black presents an avalanche of sound, impeccably played, with the passion of lifers. Black Black Black's emotional core is singer Jason Byers -- his searching, searing lyrics guide the righteous fury of a locked-in and battle-tested band. The rhythm section of Johnathan Swafford and Jeffrey Ottenbacher (bass and drums, respectively) erect rhythmic structures like steel girders, laying down an earthquake-proof foundation over which guitaristJacob Cox unleashes an array of methodical riffing, waves of feedback, and arabesque flourishes within deceptively melodic, and occasionally epic songs.

Self-Deception's Puzzles and Processes

Self-Deception's Puzzles and Processes

Jason Kido Lopez

The contemporary literature on self-deception was born out of Jean-Paul Sartre’s work on bad faith—lying to oneself. As time has progressed, the conception of self-deception has moved further and further away from Sartre’s conception of bad faith. In Self-Deception’s Puzzles and Processes: A Return to a Sartrean View, Jason Kido Lopez argues that this departure is a mistake and that we should return to thinking about self-deception in a Sartrean fashion, in which we are self-deceived when we intentionally use the strategies and methods of interpersonal deception on ourselves. Since literally tricking ourselves cannot work—we will always see through our own self-deception, after all—self-deception merely consists of the attempt to trick ourselves in this way. Other scholars have rejected this notion of self-deception historically, dismissing it as paradoxical. Lopez argues first that it isn’t paradoxical, and he further suggests that moving away from this notion of self-deception has caused the contemporary literature on the topic to be littered with disparate and conflicting theories. Indeed, there are a great many ways to avoid the allegedly paradoxical Sartrean notion of self-deception, and the resulting plethora of accounts lead to a fragmented picture of self-deception. If, however, the Sartrean view isn’t paradoxical, then there was no need for the host of contradictory theories and most researchers on self-deception have missed what was originally so intriguing about self-deception: that it, like bad faith, is the process of literally trying to trick oneself into believing what is false or unwarranted. Self-Deception’s Puzzles and Processes will be of great interest to students and scholars of epistemology, philosophy of mind, psychology, and continental philosophy, and to anyone else interested in the problems of self-deception.
Imagining Ireland's Independence

Imagining Ireland's Independence

Jason K. Knirck

The key turning point in modern Ireland's history, the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 has shadowed Ireland's political life for decades. In this first book-length assessment of the treaty in over seventy years, Jason Knirck recounts the compelling story of the nationalist politics that produced the Irish Revolution, the tortuous treaty negotiations, and the deep divisions within Sinn FZin that led to the slow unraveling of fragile party cohesion. Focusing on broad ideological and political disputes, as well as on the powerful personalities involved, the author considers the major issues that divided the pro- and anti-treaty forces, why these issues mattered, and the later judgments of historians. He concludes that the treaty debates were in part the result of the immaturity of Irish nationalist politics, as well as the overriding emphasis given to revolutionary unity. A fascinating story in their own right, the treaty debates also open a wider window onto questions of European nationalism, colonialism, state-building, and competing visions of Irish national independence. Alfred Gilbert's Aestheticism

Alfred Gilbert's Aestheticism

Jason Edwards

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2006
sidottu
Alfred Gilbert's Aestheticism presents the first sustained re-evaluation of the life and work of one of the most acclaimed sculptors of the late-Victorian period. Drawing on important new archival sources, this ground-breaking study challenges the customary assumption that Aestheticism was primarily a literary, painterly or architectural phenomena. Jason Edwards reveals both the diverse ways in which Gilbert's sculptures operated within the context of Aestheticism and also how these works provided a unique and provocative commentary on the history of masculine friendship and eroticism in the period leading up to and beyond the Wilde trials in 1895. Detailed readings are offered of the relationship of Gilbert's work to essays by Pater and Swinburne, poems, plays, and novels by Wilde and W. S. Gilbert, and paintings by Burne-Jones, Leighton, Rossetti, Solomon, Whistler, and Watts. With over 90 illustrations, including key contemporary photographs showing Gilbert's works in their original contexts, this book makes a major contribution to the field of Victorian sculpture studies.
