How long can the terrible secrets of the past remain buried? As the caskets of her adoptive parents are lowered into the ground, sixteen-year-old Jessica has no idea what her future holds. All too soon, however, she finds herself forcibly separated from her sister and sent to live with an aunt she has never known. Aunt Carson, a high-society gold digger, will do whatever it takes to get her hands on Jessica's sizeable inheritance-even if it means betraying her own son, even if it means resorting to murder.About the Author: Melanie Lane Wells began writing poetry when she was twelve years old, but it wasn't long before she moved on to storytelling. The idea of the main characters of Jessica and Nathan from Secrets of Sandy Cove came to her when she was about fourteen, but the motivation to write their story did not flow from her until she was a married woman with children. To date, she has completed her second book, Sacrifice, which is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet/Mob story. Today, Melanie and her three children live in Ludowici, Georgia. I've known few poets with more energy, more of a need, line by line, metaphor by metaphor, in exploring his subjects and experiences than Rod Torreson. His subjects vary from rural, in town, family, for instance, but he also writes well about inanimate things-carved ducks, an electric fence, for instance-giving them a life of their own. I'll recommend the book by quoting from just two poems: first, the opening lines of a poem about a storm: "The leaves on edge, clouds/with buried match heads." And second, the opening lines of my favorite poem in the book, about a snow man: "When a snowman is built, like a man it has death/already in him."-David Allen Evans, author of nine collections of poems and of a poem that's amongmany others going to the moon next year in a NASA project.Rodney Torreson's poem "The Candling," in his latest collection, The Ascension of Sandy's Drive-In, illuminates the life pulsing inside an otherwise featureless egg in much the way that Torreson himself illuminates red-veined life pulsing within what many might see as the vast featureless expanse of the Midwest. For the most part, Torreson doesn't hew to the dramatic but to the mundane, revealing what can be noteworthy, startling-even expansive-in collecting the mail, bagging groceries, packing a suitcase, strolling past a neighbor on the sidewalk. In moments that draw no attention to themselves, Rodney Torreson sees not just consequence, but blood and bone.-Barbara Saunier, winner, The MacGuffin 16th National Poet HuntRodney Torreson's poems carry the reader deep into the Midwest where the past is visible in the present, "wheel tracks from a stagecoach, where grass never grew back," where there is "no dawn, no sunset, but days all the same mirrored in sumptuous puddles." The imagery and language depict a landscape teeming with flowers, trees, fields, tractors and machinery, but also people who define a life: parents, siblings, old flames and townspeople all rendered in their memorable particularity. This collection is a homage to the value of close attention to life and to the world, where "the leaves suggested in their loll as they tinkered with wind that I should live in grace and look for good."-Robert Haight, author of Shimmer

Short Story Press Presents Sandy's Mended Heart
This story follows Sandy, a 19-year-old woman, as she makes the difficult transition from living in an insular religious community to "outside" life in a college town. Sandy struggles with: - Living alone when she has always been surrounded by a close family; - Meeting different types of people when she has always been in a small community; - Making her way with new people who don't think or act like those at home--she has to figure out how they think and what they actually mean by what they say and how they act; - Meeting men who live and work in environments - a college campus, a military base--that are the total opposites of the community she has known all her life; - Dealing with her need to find love, and hopefully a marriage, in a new world, without the guidelines of her strict community or the oversight of her family; - Falling in love with a man who is so totally different from her father, brothers, cousins and all the men she has known in her life, and in fact is a soldier, someone whom her pacifist religious community would find totally unacceptable; - Finding a church home and a place where she can live with her strong religious convictions even though she does not totally accept the limitations of her original church; - Coping with love and loss, putting lessons of forgiveness into practice, and picking up the pieces of a broken heart without becoming bitter.Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Resisting Removal: The Sandy Lake Tragedy of 1850

The account of a nearly-forgotten tragedy of American history, Resisting Removal brings to life a story of political intrigue and bitter betrayal in this moving depiction of a people's desperate struggle to adapt to a changing, hostile world. Captivating and engaging for all the right reasons; talented historical storytelling at its finest. In February 1850, the United States government ordered the removal of all Lake Superior bands of Ojibwe living upon ceded lands in Wisconsin. The La Pointe Ojibwe, led by their chief elder Kechewaishke, objected, citing promises made just eight years earlier that they would not be removed during their lifetimes. But, Minnesota Territorial Governor Alexander Ramsey and Indian Agent John Watrous had a devious plan to force their removal to Sandy Lake, Minnesota. Put into action, the negligence and ill-intents of Ramsey and Watrous resulted in the death of approximately four hundred Ojibwe people in an event that has become known as the Sandy Lake Tragedy. Despite the tragedy, government officials, aided by the interests of traders and businessmen, continued their efforts to remove the La Pointe Ojibwe from their ancient homeland on Madeline Island. But the Ojibwe resisted removal time and again. Relying on their traditional lifeways and the assistance of missionaries and local residents, the Ojibwe survived numerous hardships throughout the removal efforts. By 1852, without government approval, the La Pointe Ojibwe traveled to Washington, D.C. to finally right the wrongs against them and to protect their homes. Two years later they earned permanent homes near their homelands after signing the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe. Follow along as trader and interpreter Benjamin Armstrong, a real historical participant, lives through the harrowing and ever-changing times on the Wisconsin and Minnesota frontiers. Discover the truth about this tragic past and the intentional exploitation of the Ojibwe people and culture. But also, come to understand the complexity of history and question whose story is really being told.

The assemblage of animals living in sandy shores is richer than it might first appear, and it offers wonderful opportunities for ecological explanation without the need for expensive equipment. This book introduces the natural history of the community and provides keys that will enable readers to name the animals they find. It provides practical approaches for behavioural and ecological studies, including the survey and monitoring of populations. Local investigations of this kind form an essential basis for planning the conservation of sandy shore habitats, which are important both in their own right and as feeding grounds for birds. This is a digital reprint edition of the book originally published in 1994 with ISBNs 0855462949 (hbk) & 0855462930 (pbk).
