Chunni Lal grew up among heroes. And at the age of nineteen, he became a hero himself. In the 1987 Siachen attack, he was the first to reach the enemy post and was, subsequently, awarded the Sena Medal. Lt Gen. Satish Dua (Retd.) was his commanding officer in the battalion at the LoC a decade later, when Chunni was a combat-experienced Havildar and an inspirational figure. For counter insurgency operations, he was awarded the Veer Chakra at this time. Seven years later, in 2007, while deployed again on the LoC in North Kashmir during a counter infiltration operation, Naib Subedar Chunni Lal was killed in action. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra. With the Sena Medal, the Veer Chakra and Ashok Chara, Naib Subedar Chunni Lal became the highest awarded soldier of the Indian Army.

This book provides a comprehensive examination of animal biotechnology and its practical applications in the fields of veterinary medicine, pharmaceuticals, and animal food production. Transgenic technologies are widely utilized in enhancing milk production and meat yield in farm animals, as well as in developing models for human diseases. Transgenic animals also play a crucial role in the production of proteins for human medical use. In addition, biotechnology facilitates xenotransplantation from animals to humans, and genetic engineering is commonly employed in farm animals. Nuclear transfer technology has emerged as a preferred method for cloning animals. The potential applications of biotechnology in managing animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, avian flu, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy are significant. Vaccines, particularly genetically engineered or DNA vaccines, are among the most important biotechnology-based products. Gene therapy for diseases in pet animals is a rapidly evolving field, as many of the technologies utilized in human clinical trials were initially developed in animals, and many of the diseases affecting cats and dogs are similar to those in humans. RNA interference technology is increasingly being employed in veterinary research. Molecular diagnosis, including polymerase chain reaction and its modifications, fluorescent in situ hybridization, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, is playing an important role in veterinary practice. Newer biochip-based technologies and biosensors are also being utilized in veterinary diagnostics. This book aims to elucidate the complexities of biotechnology as they pertain to animal health and production.
This book provides a step by step guide to the technique and interpretation of sonography. Written for practising physicians and radiologists, comprehensive labelled diagrams help guide you through the sonographic anatomy and ultrasound examination.
Goats hold significant potential for future domestication due to their versatile nature and ability to sustain and thrive in a more eco-friendly manner. In contrast to cattle or buffalo farming, goat rearing necessitates less initial and ongoing capital investment. Moreover, goats exhibit a higher reproductive rate compared to cattle or buffaloes, which makes them better suited for farming on marginal lands where other livestock may not survive. This book provides a comprehensive overview of goat production, with a particular emphasis on India. It also incorporates relevant information from global sources. Goats have played a pivotal role in research and development initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation through the utilization of small ruminants. For research findings to be beneficial, they must be disseminated widely, and this book serves as a means of promoting and sharing research outcomes to benefit underprivileged and resource-constrained farmers. This book is expected to serve as a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in goats.
Draws attention to new uncertainties and challenges that have emerged in India`s security environment in the last few years because of the volatile nature of international relations. The 21st century has witnessed the evolution of relations among nations in a manner that has disrupted the sanctity of the international order built in the 20th century. For instance, the rule-based international system is being violated and the violators are not being punished. There is a tendency on the part of major powers to pursue policies governed by nationalism and protectionism without caring for their impact on other nations. The legitimacy of international agreements has been diluted by abrupt withdrawal of big powers from them. The rise of China as an economic and military power and its assertiveness has ruffled the international environment, making choices difficult for smaller nations. The resurgence of Russia and its unquestioned aggressive behaviour vis-a-vis other nations has established a new norm. The proclamation of “America First” doctrine by Donald trump has cut into the very spirit of “collective security” which was the basis of United Nations. It is in this kind of disruptive environment that India has to safeguard its national security against the onslaughts of its adversaries and the shifting behaviour of its partners and neighbours. Despite India`s best efforts to improve relations with China, the future is uncertain. India`s surgical strikes across the LoC on 29 September 2016 and its retaliatory air strike on Balakot terrorist training camp on 26 February 2019 have led us nowhere to believe that Pakistan will be deterred.Despite United States and India having moved closer to each other in defence cooperation, how far United States will stand by its commitments in times of crises remains a question mark. Russia is an old and tested friend but its closeness with China in recent years and its newfound fascination for Pakistan have created a dent in the Indian mind in its trustworthiness. As far as India`s neighbours are concerned, they have been always regarded as reliable partners in India`s security architecture. But whether geopolitical changes brought about by China`s desire to intrude into India`s strategic space in South Asia will allow the neighbours to remain trustworthy partners is a new challenge that India faces. These and other aspects of India`s security environment in the context of a highly unstable international situation have been thoroughly examined.
