The concepts of territory and territoriality are analysed on the basis of anthropological and archaeological data. It is assumed that territory and territoriality are more complex concepts than simple space occupation. For the case of Egypt in the Old Kingdom, the author of this volume considers different variables related to the ideology and to the socio-political and economic systems of the Egyptian state. Its consolidation, the royal power legitimisation and that of the elite, and the socio-political and economic system are here considered from their unification in the Early Dynastic period, to the Old Kingdom, when the state expanded and its political and ideological maturity was achieved.

Il villaggio di Bressanone-Stufles (Alto Adige, Italia) stato oggetto di decennali indagini archeologiche che hanno confermato un'occupazione lungo tutta l'et del Ferro (VI-I sec. a.C.). L'ampio bacino di ossa animali analizzato, a cui sono stati aggiunti i dati editi di studi precedenti, ha permesso di formulare ipotesi sulla paleo-economia adottata dal villaggio e di stabilire un modello socio-economico dell'area retica.L'economia si basava primariamente sull'allevamento di bovini e ovicaprini al fine di sfruttarne i prodotti secondari (trazione, latte, riproduzione, lana). Integrando approcci diversi, archeologico e sociale, si tentato di stabilire le diverse destinazioni funzionali del villaggio e la presenza di gruppi sociali differenziati. L'analisi delle dimensioni degli animali si rivelata utile per valutarne i cambiamenti in senso cronologico e geografico con le regioni confinanti. Ci , assieme alla scoperta di un reperto riferibile ad un asino, ha aperto la strada ad ipotesi di legami con il mondo etrusco e mediterraneo.The village of Bressanone-Stufles (South Tyrol, Italy) has been the subject of archaeological investigations for decades; the excavations have confirmed a continuity of occupation throughout the Iron Age (6th-1st c. BC). The large animal bone assemblage analysed in this study, which includes published data from previous publication as well as unpublished materials, made it possible to formulate hypotheses on the palaeo-economy adopted by the human group inhabiting this village and to establish a socio-economic model for the Rhaetian area.The economy at the site was primarily based on the rearing of cattle and sheep/goats to exploit their secondary products (traction, milk, reproduction, wool). By adopting a social and archaeological approach a study of the possible functional uses of several areas of the village was carried out and an investigation of the presence of differentiated social groups was accomplished. A biometric comparison between the Bressanone-Stufles assemblage and assemblages from neighbouring regions was also conducted to understand whether livestock size differences through time could be identified. This analysis, together with the discovery of a bone find attributed to a donkey, points toward the likely existence of links with the Etruscan and Mediterranean worlds.

The Society of Jesus was founded by Ignatius Loyola on a principal of strict obedience to papal and superiors’ authorities, yet the nature of the Jesuits's work and the turbulent political circumstances in which they operated, inevitably brought them into conflict with the Catholic hierarchy. In order to better understand and contextualise the debates concerning obedience, this book examines the Jesuits of south-western Europe during the generalate of Claudio Acquaviva. Acquaviva’s thirty year generalate (1581-1615) marked a challenging time for the Jesuits, during which their very system of government was called into doubt. The need for obedience and the limits of that obedience posed a question of fundamental importance both to debates taking place within the Society, and to the definition of a collective Jesuit identity. At the same time, struggles for jurisdiction between political states and the papacy, as well as the difficulties raised by the Protestant Reformation, all called for matters to be rethought. Divided into four chapters, the book begins with an analysis of the texts and contexts in which Jesuits reflected on obedience at the turn of the seventeenth century. The three following chapters then explore the various Ignatian sources that discussed obedience, placing them within their specific contexts. In so doing the book provides fascinating insights into how the Jesuits under Acquaviva approached the concept of obedience from theological and practical standpoints.

El espanol y su estructura, Segunda edicion, es un repaso integro del espanol para estudiantes bilinguees a nivel universitario. Ha sido concebida para hispanohablantes que han vivido en contacto con el idioma pero que no han recibido instruccion formal en la adquisicion de la escritura estandarizada del idioma. Este texto puede usarse en un nivel basico como a nivel intermedio, sin embargo rinde mejores resultados cuando se emplea en cursos secuenciales a nivel de universidad. Sus 15 capitulos han sido corregidos y modificados con vistas hacia un mejor y mas facil entendimiento del material, teniendo en cuenta la poblacion estudiantil para la que ha sido concebida. Dos capitulos preliminares sirven de base para las lecciones subsiguientes. Entre los temas introductorios se exploran cuestiones sobre la puntuacion, la entonacion y otros relacionados. Asimismo se ha hecho hincapie en el area de los anglicismos y los problemas que se generan a partir de la interferencia lingueistica. Ademas de abarcar temas especificos de gramatica, tambien se incluyen secciones de ortografia destacando areas clave en el uso o abuso de consonantes o en la confusion entre ciertos pares de palabras y frases que al pronunciarlas suenan de forma muy parecida pero se escriben de forma muy distinta y no tienen el mismo significado. Esta segunda edicion incluye tambien tres autoexamenes, uno despues de cada 5 capitulos. Estos ejercicios representan un reto para los estudiantes y podrian usarse como practica para los examenes del curso. El espanol y su estructura, Segunda edicion, posee la ventaja de que incluye una seleccion de lecturas lo cual elimina la necesidad de comprar un libro de lectura adicional. Los estudiantes invierten en un libro de texto que integra en un solo volumen material adecuado y de calidad que provee una base firme que muy bien puede servir para prepararlos para una sub-especializacion o para una carrera en espanol.

Nuestro texto se basa en la evolucion de la lengua castellana, desde sus origenes en latin hasta su forma presente. Al ser una segunda edicion, se infiere que el libro se ha estado preparando por mas de 10 anos y es el producto de extensas investigaciones en distintos campos linguisticos como trasfondos historicos, lenguas en contacto, dialectologia, etc. Sus numerosos y variados ejercicios proveen una herramienta idonea para que el estudiante alcance un alto nivel de proficiencia en el aprendizaje de nuestro idioma, su evolucion a partir del periodo latino y tambien las influencias que ha recibido de otras lenguas. Nuestras bibliografias se han puesto al dia y, finalmente, hay tres apendices referentes a terminologia linguistica, fonetica y el sistema verbal latino. La primera edicion (1999) del libro se ha empleado durante varios anos, lo cual nos ha permitido ver sus virtudes tanto como sus defectos, por lo cual nos hemos concentrado en aquellas e intentado corregir estos ultimos. El resultado es un producto maravilloso e innovador que ha probado ser muy efectivo para el grupo de alumnos al que va dirigido. Como nuestros propios estudiantes en el City College of New York han observado en diversas ocasiones: !Este curso es fenomenal y tambien es divertido! Creemos que ese aspecto "ligero" de la mayor parte de los ejercicios ha permitido que los estudiantes aprendan una asignatura arida dentro de una atmosfera relajada, todo sin perder, a la vez, su profundidad.
