This book is the first comprehensive effort to bring together Water, Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) in a way that goes beyond the traditional focus on irrigated agriculture. Apart from looking at the role of water and sanitation for human well-being, it proposes alternative and more locally appropriate ways to address complex water management and governance challenges from the local to global levels against a backdrop of growing uncertainties. The authors challenge mainstream supply-oriented and neo-Malthusian visions that argue for the need to increase the land area under irrigation in order to feed the world’s growing population. Instead, they argue for a reframing of the debate concerning production processes, waste, food consumption and dietary patterns whilst proposing alternative strategies to improve water and land productivity, putting the interests of marginalized and disenfranchized groups upfront. The book highlights how accessing water for FSN can be challenging for small-holders, vulnerable and marginalized women and men, and how water allocation systems and reform processes can negatively affect local people’s informal rights. The book argues for the need to improve policy coherence across water, land and food and is original in making a case for strengthening the relationship between the human rights to water and food, especially for marginalized women and men. It will be of great interest to practitioners, students and researchers working on water and food issues.

The team behind Disegno: A Quarterly Journal of Design is proud to announce Design Reviewed, a new biannual publication devoted to experiential writing around design and its users. Each issue of Design Reviewed contains ten essays in which writers get hands-on with design and its various manifestations in the world. The texts are not qualitative assessments of their subjects, but rather personal reflections on design and the contexts in which it operates. This issue is structured around ten different forms of design output: technology, ecology, media, object, body, system, interface, policy, space and phenomena. While these categories are not exhaustive, they aim to provide a structuring principle for a discipline that is increasingly diffuse and varied. In contrast to Disegno s journal format, Design Reviewed is a smaller, more book-like publication, which takes its cue from publications such as field guides, jotters and technical manuals. It is a publication designed to be portable and handy, with a cream dust jacket to help protect it during journeys. While Disegno will be reserved for long-form reporting, in-depth interviews, and emerging project stories, Design Reviewed will be a space for reflection on design as its users experience it

The book provides a visual run-through of liver pathology through high-quality images from the healthy liver through acute liver injury to chronic liver disease - stressing on common mechanisms for specific histological appearances, correlating them with clinical features and laboratory investigations to reach the diagnosis. Individual chapters in this richly illustrated atlas cover the wide gamut of liver disease, including types of liver injury, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease and its complications, vascular and autoimmune liver diseases, pediatric liver diseases, liver tumors, and finally, pathology of the transplanted liver. This book bridges the gap by integrating basic clinical information with histopathological findings, as existing books cater primarily to the pathologist’s needs and do not provide sufficient clinical background to engage the clinician. It serves as a quick guide for adult and pediatric hepatologists, liver surgery doctors, pathologists as well as trainees in gastroenterology, hepatology, gastrointestinal surgery, liver transplantation and pediatric gastroenterology.

Managing India's Nuclear Forces

Managing India's Nuclear Forces

India is now enmeshed in the deterrence game?actively with its traditional adversary Pakistan, and potentially with China. At the same time it is finding easier access to fissile materials and strategic technologies. In order to deal with these developments safely and wisely, the nation needs a much more sophisticated and multidisciplinary understanding of the strategic, technological, operational, and cost issues involved in nuclear matters. In this important book, Indian strategic analyst Verghese Koithara explains and evaluates India's nuclear force management, encouraging a broad public conversation that may act as a catalyst for positive change before the subcontinent experiences unthinkable carnage. The defense management system of a nuclear power absolutely needs to be sound and thorough. In addition to the considerable demands of managing its nuclear forces, it also must control conventional forces in a manner that forestalls nuclear escalation of a conflict by either side. Expanding and upgrading nuclear forces without enhancing deterrence is dangerous and should be avoided. India's nuclear force management system is grafted onto a woefully inadequate overall system of defense management.Koithara dissects all of these issues and suggests a way forward, drawing on recent developments in deterrence theory around the world.

With the backdrop of new global powers, this volume interrogates the state of writing in English. Strongly interdisciplinary, it challenges the prevailing orthodoxy of postcolonial literary theory. An insistence on fieldwork and linguistics makes this book scene-changing in its approach to understanding and reading emerging literature in English.
Counseling Asian Indian Immigrant Families

Counseling Asian Indian Immigrant Families

Varughese Jacob

This book provides insight into the unique challenges facing Indian and South Asian immigrants in the West—particularly in the United States. It explores the “baggage” they carry; their expectations versus the realities of negotiating a new cultural, social, religious, and economic milieu; nostalgia and idealization of the past; and the hybridity of existence. Within this context, the author discusses factors which often contribute to intergenerational family conflict among this population. Jacob asserts that this conflict is largely a product of differences in cultural values and identity, acculturation stress, and the experience of marginality. After analyzing and interpreting empirical data collected from two hundred families, he proposes the “Praxis-Reflection-Action” (PRA) Model: a five-stage therapeutic model and the first pastoral psychotherapeutic model developed for the Asian Indians living in the West.
