The Subordinated Sex traces the enduring, powerful legacy of male attitudes toward women, their sexuality, and their roles as wives and mothers. Traditionally the creators and chroniclers of opinion, men have until recently written a history that reflects only their own convictions and impressions--a history rarely punctuated by a female voice and founded on an almost universal belief in women's inferiority.Acclaimed as a pioneering study when first published in 1973, Vern Bullough's work has since established itself as a standard in historical literature on women. Updated and revised with Sarah Slavin and Brenda Shelton, The Subordinated Sex is a vast survey ranging from prehistoric to contemporary times, examining a diversity of cultures, and taking into account writings from a great variety of sources. From a consideration of Babylonian legal codes to Victorian prescriptive medical pamphlets, medieval clerical treatises to Islamic erotic poetry, Bullough and his coauthors recount not only how men have portrayed women but also how they have justified their subordination of the opposite sex.In recent years, women have successfully challenged males' self-designated role as gatekeepers of written records and have found within the past a more complete view of how women lived, what they thought, and what they achieved. By focusing, however, not on women's history but on the history of men's attitudes toward their female companions, The Subordinated Sex reveals, more than any other single work, the conditions that sparked the feminist movement and the reasons it must inspire a change in the lives of men as well as women.
Picked it up and couldn’t put it down, Gary… A compelling read of your accomplished career investigating drug cartels, organized crime, money laundering in Canada & working with allies overseas… Your arguments for a structural change of the RCMP are strongly & convincingly conveyed…An important work that I hope & trust will impact the national discourse on policing roles and shine a brighter light on foreign interference in Canada… Good on ya, Sir… Ralph Maher Editor, Last Post, RCMP Veterans’ Association / Past National Vice President, The Pillar Society "On a piercingly cold November night, Lee and I, freshly shifted from Vancouver Drug Section, stood at the threshold of our new abode in North Gower, Ontario. A whisper of our past echoed as the movers departed, leaving us amidst the scattered remnants of our former life. The only solace in this abrupt displacement? The phone was thoughtfully activated in tune with our arrival. The seismic shift from Vancouver wasn't by choice but rather the shadowed aftermath of a high-risk drug undercover operation. My 'evil twin', Bobby 'Spade' Williams, had daringly pierced the veil of notorious Vancouver criminal rings. But with great success came the spectre of danger. Ottawa's relative obscurity became a sanctuary until justice had its day in court. However, a slight misstep by the DOJ Crown set in motion a chilling chain of events that would bring a known contract assassin into our once serene narrative. The underworld responded with fury as Garry chipped away at the icy facade of organized crime. This daunting chapter would not only reshape Garry's identity as a lawman but galvanize him to challenge the very system that fostered criminal growth in Canada. His narrative is not just a tale of police work; it paints a larger canvas detailing the sinister web spun by the Chinese Triad crime syndicates. Their empire, built on drug trafficking, used its vast wealth for pervasive influence, elite subjugation, and systemic bribery. Disturbingly, this clandestine operation wasn't unknown to the nation's helm - the Prime Minister and other luminaries. Their silence often masked as ignorance, echoed the tragedies endured by countless virtuous souls within RCMP and CSIS. Despite the oppressive shadows cast upon him, Garry emerged, taking on a pivotal role as the National Director of the Proceeds of Crime Division, RCMP. His tenacity and grit, ironically, were the very traits that deterred him from ascending to the highest echelons of the Force. This paradox epitomizes the structural and moral decay that plagued the RCMP—a descent further exemplified by the explosive revelations of the Phantom Secure operation, spotlighting the treachery of CCP spy Cameron Ortis. Garry's moving memoir uncovers the veiled transgressions of the past, charting the RCMP's metamorphosis into a fractured entity. The nation's image as a refuge for international crime magnates and the tragic fentanyl epidemic both owe their roots to the very warnings sounded by Garry and Brian McAdam, which were covered in Michel Juneau-Katsuya's Sidewinder report.was originally panned and then destroyed by management within CSIS, who were more interested in their careers than upsetting their political Masters from high up. That report was from a bygone era and its findings sidelined until recently. With both Under Cover and The Mosaic Effect, Canadians now have a better understanding of the damage done by ambitious politicians and power-hungry corporations. Today, Garry remains on the front lines, safeguarding financial terrains as Chief Compliance Officer for VersaBank. Drawing from his vast reservoir of expertise, he tirelessly implores the government to awaken to Canada's escalating crime vortex, advocating for a safer legacy for our progeny."
"Garry Clement is a national treasure. He’s spent his life in service to Canada, and I guarantee he knows more about international organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and the state actors – China, Iran, Mexico, and Russia – who today pose a major national security threat to Canada. This book should be required reading by every politician and bureaucrat in Ottawa and everyone else who cares about the future of this country. Jeffrey Robinson, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Laundryman UNDER COVER: The True Story of One Man’s Fight Against Canada’s Criminal Collapse – Updated Edition By Garry Clement Former RCMP National Director of Proceeds of Crime | Chief Compliance Officer, VersaBank “When your enemies wear suits and your allies go silent, you’re not in a system—you’re in a war.” From a frigid November night in North Gower to the inner circles of Canada’s criminal underworld, Garry Clement’s story is not just a memoir—it’s a national reckoning. In this powerful updated edition of the bestselling Under Cover, Clement adds new, harrowing chapters to a life already shaped by danger, betrayal, and unflinching integrity. As “Bobby Spade,” Garry infiltrated Vancouver’s deadliest drug syndicates. What followed wasn’t a hero’s welcome—it was exile, death threats, and systemic betrayal. When a Crown misstep led to a contract assassin being released, Clement’s life—and Canada’s justice system—was irrevocably changed. In this new edition, Garry reveals never-before-published insights into: His role as Chief Anti-Money Laundering Officer at VersaBank, and what banks are missing. The ongoing failures of FINTRAC and federal regulators to stem the flow of illicit money. The RCMP’s internal decay—exposed further by the Phantom Secure scandal and the Cameron Ortis treason case. How organized crime, foreign influence, and political cowardice have infiltrated Canada’s democratic institutions. The damning truths buried in the Sidewinder report, silenced by CSIS and ignored by Ottawa. With the precision of an investigator and the soul of a patriot, Garry Clement delivers a chilling message: Canada is wide open for corruption—and our leadership is asleep at the wheel. "Picked it up and couldn’t put it down, Gary… A compelling read of your accomplished career investigating drug cartels, organized crime, money laundering in Canada & working with allies overseas… Your arguments for a structural change of the RCMP are strongly & convincingly conveyed…An important work that I hope & trust will impact the national discourse on policing roles and shine a brighter light on foreign interference in Canada… Good on ya, Sir… Ralph Maher Editor, Last Post, RCMP Veterans’ Association / Past National Vice President, The Pillar Society Booksellers take note: This is the kind of book readers will debate, share, and demand answers about. It’s a must-stock title for fans of real-life espionage, true crime, and political thrillers—except every word is horrifyingly real. “Under Cover is more than a story. It’s a wake-up call for a nation on the edge.”

How do survivors recover from the worst urban flood in American history, a disaster that destroyed nearly the entire physical landscape of a city, as well as the mental and emotional maps that people use to navigate their everyday lives? This question has haunted the survivors of Hurricane Katrina and informed the response to the subsequent flooding of New Orleans across many years.Left to Chance takes us into two African American neighborhoods-working-class Hollygrove and middle-class Pontchartrain Park-to learn how their residents have experienced “Miss Katrina” and the long road back to normal life. The authors spent several years gathering firsthand accounts of the flooding, the rushed evacuations that turned into weeks- and months-long exile, and the often confusing and exhausting process of rebuilding damaged homes in a city whose local government had all but failed. As the residents’ stories make vividly clear, government and social science concepts such as “disaster management,” “restoring normality,” and “recovery” have little meaning for people whose worlds were washed away in the flood. For the neighbors in Hollygrove and Pontchartrain Park, life in the aftermath of Katrina has been a passage from all that was familiar and routine to an ominous world filled with raw existential uncertainty. Recovery and rebuilding become processes imbued with mysteries, accidental encounters, and hasty adaptations, while victories and defeats are left to chance.

Mother Earth was in trouble. It was impossible to deny. The climate was changing-oceans rising, storms increasing in frequency and destructiveness. Changes that took thousands of years were happening in a span of years. With the threat of famine as global temperatures increased and international trade collapsed, the world sat on the brink of war. Meanwhile, scientists and people with deep pockets were desperately searching for alternatives-Mars, the Moon, and orbiting habitats. After being scapegoated for a catastrophic rocket explosion, engineer John Marshal thought his career was over. He was delightfully surprised to hear that his wife, Dr. Alex Cummings, was hired as a manager for the Project Voyager survey mission to Mars. Not only would he be accompanying Alex-John is also given the rare opportunity to build the first Earth spaceship... in outer space, no less
One thing that you can say about military life is that it is different. Here one day, half-way around the world the next. So, you do get to travel, maybe not first class... but travel.Sometimes the duty is hard, sometimes not so much. My biggest learning experience was that if I kept my sense of humor, there was never a location or a situation that didn't have a lighter side. This little offering is a collection of snapshots of my and my sailor's journey through that life, starting from the time that I was born-into a military family-until I retired from my own service of over thirty-five years.
Food, Farms, and Community

Throughout the United States, people are increasingly concerned about where their food comes from, how it is produced, and how its production affects individuals and their communities. The answers to these questions reveal a complex web of interactions. While large, distant farms and multinational companies dominate at national and global levels, innovative programs including farmers' markets, farm-to-school initiatives, and agritourism are forging stronger connections between people and food at local and regional levels. At all levels of the food system, energy use, climate change, food safety, and the maintenance of farmland for the future are critical considerations. The need to understand food systems-what they are, who's involved, and how they work (or don't)-has never been greater. Food, Farms, and Community: Exploring Food Systems takes an in-depth look at critical issues, successful programs, and challenges for improving food systems spanning a few miles to a few thousand miles. Case studies that delve into the values that drive farmers, food advocates, and food entrepreneurs are interwoven with analysis supported by the latest research. Examples of entrepreneurial farms and organizations working together to build sustainable food systems are relevant to the entire country-and reveal results that are about much more than fresh food.
'What is refreshing about Beyond Control is the vision for the kind of society in which protestors and police recognize their mutual humanity as well as how both are needed for a democratic society to function well. ' From the Foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu How can large protest crowds be better and more respectfully managed by police? This topical book applies the principles of community-based conflict resolution to the policing of large crowds, suggesting a completely new approach that moves away from the discourse of rabble-rousing mobs towards negotiated management, and a paradigm of mutual respect for protesters as principled dissenters and for police as non-repressive agents of public order. Both are needed, the authors argue, in order for democracy to flourish.

The International Space Elevator Consortium conducted a year-long study on the development of a space elevator Earth Port. This report addresses the functional requirements and missions leading to a mature engineering complex along the equator. The report represents the culmination of efforts by multiple contributors describing the functions and operations of the Earth Port and how it interacts with other space elevator nodes. The challenge was to bring in a fresh perspective on an Earth Port by leveraging experts in many fields beyond those normally associated with space elevators. As a result of the contributions from a variety of professional backgrounds, this study should reflect a more realistic perspective of the activities at the Earth Port of a future space elevator.

A lively memoir of LGBT activist Steve Endeanone of the most influential political strategists ever to lobby Washington DC!Bringing Lesbian and Gay Rights Into the Mainstream: Twenty Years of Progress is the spirited and provocative memoir that blows the lid off the complex machinations of state and national politics. LGBT activist Steve Endean’s autobiographical chronicle, completed shortly before his death in 1993, tells insider stories that are sometimes rousing, other times infuriating, recounting the fight for lesbian and gay rights from the trenches of the Minnesota state capital to the Washington Beltway. Readers get a clear view of the political activism of building grassroots support systems, fundraising efforts, lobbying to rally support for bills, and the election/reelection of sympathetic political representatives.Bringing Lesbian and Gay Rights Into the Mainstream: Twenty Years of Progress dynamically recounts Endean’s activism and instrumental leadership of the LGBT movement from 1973 to just before his death in 1993. From being the first Executive Director of the Gay Rights National Lobby, founder and Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, and founder of the Speak Out mailgram campaigns for grassroots pressure on congresspersons on G/L rights issues, the author discusses with amusing anecdotes and self-effacing humor his strategies, victories, and failures as movement leader. This lively mix of the accomplishments in those crucial years and the dos and don’ts of political activism is peopled with well-known and lesser-known movers and shakers on the political landscape.Bringing Lesbian and Gay Rights Into the Mainstream: Twenty Years of Progress gives an inside look at the political process, discussing: the political roots of Steve Endeanfrom his activist beginnings in Minnesota his rise from state to national politics the basics of fundraising lobbying representatives the LGBT internal conflicts building grassroots support the hypocrisy and lack of courage inherent in politics protest activitiesFrom the book:I began to ge a sense of what a challenge I had ahead when Mayo asked what brought me to DC. Exhausted from a long flight, coping with tons of luggage, and very nervous about such a big move, I mustered the energy to explain earnestly that I'd been hired to be the first director and lobbyist for the Gay Rights National Lobby. To my shock, this distinguished gentleman doubled up with laughter and, in his charming Southern drawl, told me the Gay Rights National Lobby was dead as a doornail. He went on to suggest if that is what really brought me to Washington, DC, I might not want to haul all those boxes upstairs and perhaps I should just pack up and catch a return flight to Minnesota. That was my welcome to Washington, DC. Cold, white Minnesota never looked so appealing.Bringing Lesbian and Gay Rights Into the Mainstream: Twenty Years of Progress is stimulating, eye-opening reading for educators, students, activists in search of guidance in the political process, anyone interested in LGBT history and political history, and anyone who knew the late Steve Endean.

Desperately Young introduces the masterpieces left behind by some of the greatest rising stars in fine art - all of whom died before their thirtieth birthday. Precocious talent seeps from each artist's work, along with a sense of unfulfilled potential. Informative biographies detail their legacies, while their tragic deaths lead us to wonder what heights they might've reached, had their lives not been cut short. Richly illustrated, Desperately Young presents prime examples of each artist's work, demonstrating how our cultural heritage is just a little narrower for their loss. From Europe to America to Japan and the Indian Subcontinent, the mid-14-hundreds to the late 20th century, this book hails the acknowledged greats and introduces those who died before they could leave an indelible mark on history. A compendium of 109 artists who fell prey to sickness, warfare, heartbreak or bad luck, Desperately Young is the only book to provide an in-depth study of artists who died young.
