Urban space is an important part of the political environment-a place where people congregate to discuss, deliberate, and interact with each other. In times of great public discontent, people often turn to urban spaces to make their opinions heard and to demand change, with varying degrees of success. How are mass protests affected by the urban public space in which they occur? This book provides a theoretical model to analyse city spaces, based on the use of theories from political science, urban planning, and sociology. Hansen's approach consists of a mapping of the causal mechanisms between spatial elements, the political environment, and their combined effects on protests. This mapping is applied to three case studies-Kyiv, Minsk, and Moscow. In addition to the spatial perspective model, Urban Protest provides new insights as to how the interactions in space occur, and demonstrates how geography can create limitations and opportunities in a large variety of ways.

Martin Parr’s collection of photobooks is one of the finest to have ever been assembled and The Protest Box is a box set which brings together five books from that collection as facsimile reprints. Parr has selected diverse books which each deal with the subject of protest in quite different ways. From the documentation of various protest movements to the actual book being a form of protest, all these reprints are gems within the history of photographic publishing. A few are known but many are new, even to the connoisseur of photography books. All these books are virtually impossible to locate, so these reprints will make a substantial contribution to our understanding of this sub-genre of the photobook. The box set is accompanied by a booklet which includes an introduction by Martin Parr, an essay discussing the wider context of these books by Gerry Badger, and English translations of all the texts in the books. Enrique Bostelmann América: un Viaje a traves de la injustica First published in 1970 by Siglo XXI Editores, Mexico City; Bostelmann, a Mexican photographer, journeyed through Latin America looking for examples of injustice, such as the exploitation of indigenous Indians who were forced into factories and menial jobs. Paolo Gasparini Para verte major, América Latina First published in 1972 by Siglo XXI Editores, Mexico City; Gasparini, an Italian born photographer who has lived in Caracas most of his life, traversed Latin America to document the contrast between communism and capitalism. The book also documents and uses graffiti and graphics to emphasis his polemic. Dirk Alvermann Algeria First published in 1961 in Berlin, GDR; Alvermann, a photographer originally born in West Germany, published his book about both sides of the Algerian conflict in East Berlin. The radical design was inspired by Russian film stills. Kitai Kazuo Sanrizuka First published in 1971 by Nora-Sha, Tokyo; a classic protest book which shows the huge popular uprising inspired by the proposed building of Narita airport. Paolo Mattioli and Anna Candiani Immagini del No First published in 1974 by Occhio Magico No 11, Milan; this small format book documented various protests in Italy, from the Feminist Movement to Anti-Fascism marches.
Good Governance tut not.

Many of the most successful and recognizable protest movements in the world make use of branding techniques, even when they simultaneously reject the general concepts of branding. Branded Protest dives into this antithesis. It researches the power of branding and the influence it has on current protest movements and gives iconic examples of unique branding-efforts that support protests. We are all exposed to branding: from a torn sheet of cardboard scrawled with handwriting to slick corporate advertising campaigns. Here, we take up the term branding to assess the visualization of iconic protest movements, and to identify the unique tools used to attract the general public and activate people to join in. Branding has become a means to unify a movement and to give protest a visual identity. For Branded Protest we spoke with organizers of protest movements around the world, to identify the particular techniques that help movements deliver a unique and clear message.

Social movements throughout the world have been central to history, politics, society, and culture. Observing Protest from a Place examines the impact of one such campaign, the global justice movement, as seen from the southern hemisphere. Drawing upon a collective survey from the 2011 World Social Forum in Dakar, the essays explore a number of vital issues, including the methodological problems of studying international activist gatherings and how scholars can overcome those challenges. By demonstrating the importance of the global justice movement and the role of nongovernmental organizations for participants in the southern hemisphere, this volume is an important addition to the literature on community action.
Farmers Protest, A Movement for Our Times
Under colonial rule in India in 1917, Mohandas K Gandhi led a satyagraha alongside local farmers in Bihar, resulting in what would become the nonviolent movement for India's independence. More than a century later, one of the largest nonviolent farmers' protests in recent world history took place in New Delhi. The unrest began in Punjab and Haryana in June 2020 and reached India's capital city in November 2020. By January 2021, hundreds of thousands of farmers and farm labourers demonstrated against three draconian farm laws passed at the height of the COVID19 pandemic. The farmers' protest continued until the Indian Government finally relented and withdrew the laws. Most people living in towns and cities in India today have been cut off from their rural roots. They know little about how their food reaches them from farm to table. They know even less about the lives of the farmers and farm labourers who produce this food. Farmers Protest tries to bridge this gap as it narrates why Indian farmers were compelled to resist, and how they are the first responders to the challenges created by climate change.

This study of British missionary activity in the later nineteenth century India focuses attention on the missionaries' concern with social issues and involvement in agitation for social reform. With no stake in the Indian social system, the missionaries were sometimes more outspoken than the Hindu reformers in attacking social evils. They were also involved in controversies over the status of Hindu women, in campaigns against European abuse of Indian labour, in temperance campaigns, and in crusades for reform of opium system. In the course of his analysis, the author not only raises questions about the nature and ramifications of the missionary movement itself, but also about the attitude of the educated elite and the nature of the forces opposing reforms within Indian society. What, for instance, were the missionaries' objectives and why, if conversion with their ultimate aim, were they so concerned with these social issues? Was their social zeal exogenous in its origin or indigenous? How far were they divided among themselves and why? Again how far did they help to shape Indian views and influence Government policy?
Migrant Protest

Migrant protest has proliferated worldwide in the last two decades, explicitly posing questions of identity, rights, and equality in a globalized world. Nonetheless, such mobilizations are often considered anomalies in social movement studies, and political sociology more broadly, due to "weak interests" and a particularly disadvantageous position of "outsiders" to claim rights connected to citizenship. In an attempt to address this seeming paradox, Migrant Protest: Interactive Dynamics in Precarious Mobilizations explores the interactions and spaces shaping the emergence, trajectory, and fragmentation of migrant protest in unfavorable contexts of marginalization. Such a perspective unveils both the odds of precarious mobilizations and the ways they can be temporarily overcome. While adopting the encompassing terminology of "migrant," this book focuses on precarious migrants, including both asylum seekers and "illegalized" migrants.

“A book like this that sets out the law relevant to protest is essential for campaigners and activists. But it’s not just a guide to legal rights when protesting, it’s also a handbook for the defence of civil disobedience and non-violent direct action in our democracy. That makes it essential reading for us all.” Caroline Lucas MP, in her Foreword to the Second Edition The Protest Handbook, Second Edition is a clear and accessible guide to protest law, which brings together both the criminal and civil aspects of this area of law and explains complex legal issues in a user-friendly format. The authors guide practitioners and non-practitioners through the various issues and proceedings, covering the following: protestors’ rights and police powers; criminal proceedings; common offences and defences; the law on occupations; challenging injunctions; and holding the police to account. The Second Edition covers all the core legislation and case law including: Public Order Act 1986; Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994; Human Rights Act 1998; Boddington v BTP, Rice v Connolly and R (Laporte) v Chief Constable of Gloucestershire as well as more recent developments such as: Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Police Act 2014; The Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020; James v DPP (2016); R (DPP) v Stratford MC (2017); DPP v Ziegler (2019); R v Roberts (2019); Catt v UK (2019); Canada Goose v Persons Unknown (2020); INEOS v Boyd (2020); R (Jones) v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis (2020). This is an essential guide for all legal practitioners working in this area, as well as for organisations and groups who provide advice and support for protestors and, of course, for protestors themselves.
