Welcome to Goodship, New York. The sleepy suburban hamlet harbors a terrible secret. A secret that may be at the heart of two murders.Twenty-five years after the "big game" and the requisite homecoming party, Goodship's secret begins to haunt its otherwise comfortable residents. When the first murder is reported, the townsfolk are warned, but take no action. When town landmarks are vandalized, residents are aghast. And, when an attempt is made on a local hero's life, the town mobilizes, especially former soap star (and now proprietor of a favorite lunch spot) Eliza Gordon and her pal and local radio personality Midge Sumner. When the prime suspect turns up dead, Eliza and Midge mobilize to solve the murders and catch the real perpetrator. The clues are are all there. Who is doing more in Goodship than just KILLING TIME?

College admissions can be murder In Murder, She Tweets, the third in Amy Beth Arkawy's award-winning Eliza Gordon mystery series, a high-profile Admissions honcho from local Quimby College meets a deadly fate. And when Eliza's pal and sleuthing partner radio DJ Midge Sumner and her brother-in-law Jonas Gordon find themselves on the suspect list, the former actress turned Soup Opera proprietor and amateur detective, is once again embroiled in an intriguing and complicated mystery. This time she enlists aid from her reluctant sweetheart Goodship police Chief Tom Santini and eager assistant Dee Dee Danziger. But the murder's not the only mystery buzzing through bucolic Goodship, New York. A woman from Tom's past arrives with secrets of her own and nary a departure date. And Eliza is held hostage by social media as a 'fan' from her soap opera days tweets increasingly threatening messages. With pluck and humor Eliza and her cohorts wind their way through each mystery, making surprising connections and uncovering shocking revelations. Murder, She Tweets, is Eliza's most exciting adventure yet
Statistical Inference via Convex Optimization

Statistical Inference via Convex Optimization

This authoritative book draws on the latest research to explore the interplay of high-dimensional statistics with optimization. Through an accessible analysis of fundamental problems of hypothesis testing and signal recovery, Anatoli Juditsky and Arkadi Nemirovski show how convex optimization theory can be used to devise and analyze near-optimal statistical inferences.Statistical Inference via Convex Optimization is an essential resource for optimization specialists who are new to statistics and its applications, and for data scientists who want to improve their optimization methods. Juditsky and Nemirovski provide the first systematic treatment of the statistical techniques that have arisen from advances in the theory of optimization. They focus on four well-known statistical problems—sparse recovery, hypothesis testing, and recovery from indirect observations of both signals and functions of signals—demonstrating how they can be solved more efficiently as convex optimization problems. The emphasis throughout is on achieving the best possible statistical performance. The construction of inference routines and the quantification of their statistical performance are given by efficient computation rather than by analytical derivation typical of more conventional statistical approaches. In addition to being computation-friendly, the methods described in this book enable practitioners to handle numerous situations too difficult for closed analytical form analysis, such as composite hypothesis testing and signal recovery in inverse problems.Statistical Inference via Convex Optimization features exercises with solutions along with extensive appendixes, making it ideal for use as a graduate text.

With an emphasis on timeless essential mathematical background for optimization, this textbook provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to convex optimization for students in applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Authored by two influential researchers, the book covers both convex analysis basics and modern topics such as conic programming, conic representations of convex sets, and cone-constrained convex problems, providing readers with a solid, up-to-date understanding of the field. By excluding modeling and algorithms, the authors are able to discuss the theoretical aspects in greater depth. Over 170 in-depth exercises provide hands-on experience with the theory, while more than 30 'Facts' and their accompanying proofs enhance approachability. Instructors will appreciate the appendices that cover all necessary background and the instructors-only solutions manual provided online. By the end of the book, readers will be well equipped to engage with state-of-the-art developments in optimization and its applications in decision-making and engineering.

One of the most important features of nonlinear systems with several degrees of freedom is the presence of internal resonances at certain relations between natural frequencies of different modes. This monograph is the first book devoted predominantly to internal resonances in different mechanical systems including those of practical importance. The main purpose is to consider the internal resonances from the general point of view and to elucidate their role in applied nonlinear dynamics by using an efficient approach based on introducing the complex representation of equations of motion (together with the multiple scale method). Considered here are autonomous and nonautonomous discrete two-degree-of-freedom systems, infinite chains of particles, and continuous systems, including circular rings and cylindrical shells. Specific attention is paid to the case of one-to-one internal resonance in systems with cubic nonlinearities. Steady-state and nonstationary regimes of motion, interaction of the internal and external resonances at forced oscillations, and bifurcations of steady-state modes and their stability are systematically studied.
