Mapping Abundance for a Planetary Future

Mapping Abundance for a Planetary Future

Candace Fujikane

Duke University Press

In Mapping Abundance for a Planetary Future, Candace Fujikane contends that the practice of mapping abundance is a radical act in the face of settler capital's fear of an abundance that feeds. Cartographies of capital enable the seizure of abundant lands by enclosing "wastelands" claimed to be underdeveloped. By contrast, Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) cartographies map the continuities of abundant worlds. Vital to restoration movements is the art of kilo, intergenerational observation of elemental forms encoded in storied histories, chants, and songs. As a participant in these movements, Fujikane maps the ecological lessons of these elemental forms: reptilian deities who protect the waterways, sharks who swim into the mountains, the navigator Maui who fishes up the islands, the deities of snow and mists on Mauna Kea. The laws of these elements are now being violated by toxic waste dumping, leaking military jet fuel tanks, and astronomical-industrial complexes. As Kanaka Maoli and their allies stand as land and water protectors, Fujikane calls for a profound attunement to the elemental forms in order to transform climate events into renewed possibilities for planetary abundance.

Cook without worry or intimidation Cooking without a Parachute began as a cooking class for teenagers graduating from high school with my older daughter. She was interested in learning some basic cooking skills and thought her friends would enjoy that too. We had a class with eight kids headed to college and called it "Cooking without a Parachute: No recipe, no fear". They learned basic knife skills, how to turn on a stovetop burner and how to saut chicken in a pan. I taught that class and others while I was a personal chef. I had numerous requests for catering which I could not do in Tulsa without a certified professional kitchen. And, there is really no place where you can go to cook on a regular basis. So Urban Kitchen was born. People from all walks of life and cooking skills come to the kitchen to learn everything from basic knife skills to risotto making to butchering a chicken. And, most importantly, they have a great time doing it. These recipes represent the first two years of Urban Kitchen and a few come from those years before. They are favorite, often requested, recipes from those classes. As I tell everyone who cooks at Urban Kitchen...recipes are merely a guide. Take them and make them your own.

How Coptic Christian migrants reshape religious identity through the imagination of US empire Coptic Orthodox Christians comprise the largest Christian community in the Middle East and are among the oldest Christian communities in the world. While once the objects of American missionary efforts, in recent years Copts have been in the spotlight for their Christianity. A spate of ISIS-related bombings and attacks have garnered worldwide attention, leading to a series of efforts from US politicians, think tanks, and NGOs to re-channel their efforts into "saving" these Middle Eastern Christians from Muslims. The increased targeting of Copts has also contributed to the moral imaginary of the "Persecuted Church," particularly among American evangelicals, which embraces the idea that Christians around the globe are currently being persecuted more than any other time in history. Drawing on years of extensive fieldwork among Coptic migrants between Egypt and the United States, Martyrs and Migrants examines how American religious imaginaries of global Christian persecution have remapped Coptic collective memory of martyrdom. Transnational Copts have navigated the sociopolitical conditions in Egypt and the global consequences of the US "war on terror" by translating their suffering into the ambiguous forms of religious and political visibility. Candace Lukasik argues that the commingling of American conservatives and Copts has shaped a new kind of Christian kinship in blood, operating through a double movement between glorification and racialization. Occupying a position between threat and victim, Copts from the Middle East have been subject to anti-terror surveillance in the US even as they have leveraged their roles as "persecuted Christians." Through Lukasik's careful examination of the everyday processes shaping Coptic communal formation, Martyrs and Migrants broadly reveals how ideologies of spiritual kinship are forged through theological histories of martyrdom and of blood, demonstrating the global dynamics and imperial politics of contemporary Christianity.

A quest to find a lost prince. A duke goes to war to be made a king. A young man and woman discover love in a season of strife. A woman of arcane power exceeds her own expectations, to the damnation of them all. Years ago, Brian, heir to the High Throne of the Pentarchy, on a private mission, left home and headed north into the Tarrant Mountains. He never returned, yet was never declared dead. Now, with no legitimate heir to take the high throne, civil war is brewing within the Houses. Taking the initiative, Hollin, Head of House Langstraad, declares her intention to go in search of the errant prince. For Hollin, betrothed by her family to Brian when she was a child, possesses a ring which is attuned to the prince which she proposes to use as an arcane compass to find him. With misgivings, the regent and ruling council agree to the quest, but stipulate that, if she fails to find the prince, she must agree to return and marry a candidate of their choice to be crowned king. Far from home, family or friends, Hollin must use her own gifts and abilities to track down the one man who might be capable of preventing a war that will tear the Pentarchy apart. Can one woman prevent the fall of night? For time is running out and, as deeds of valor tangle with those of deceit, it is the many shifting facets of magic, in all its guises, that may soon determine the ultimate fate of the realm. Where will the lust for power lead the unscrupulous - or the unwary? "...once the game has been set in motion it will go on whether you will or no." Evocative and atmospheric, The Pentacle War: Book One - Hearts in Cups is an epic fantasy novel with a captivating and courageous woman at its heart. It is a tale of adventure, intrigue, deception and magic, driven by its characters; all of them ensnared within the politics of power.
