Han bliver endelig gift med sin Adelheid, og alt er lykkeligt, lige indtil bryllupsnatten, hvor en jaloux adelsmand forsøger at dræbe Adelheids søster, som blev gift med den unge Svend, som var Victors væbner. Mordet blev forhindret af Victors far, som han havde genfundet efter mange års uvished. Det blev Victors far, som måtte lade livet. Så Victor og hans udkårne, grevinde Adelheid, måtte rejse med ligtog hjem til deres hjem, Danefeldt Slot. Med sig har de Sir Otto van der Stern og hans mest betroede mænd.
