The Great Dissenter: The Story of John Marshall Harlan, America's Judicial Hero
The "superb" (The Guardian) biography of an American who stood against all the forces of Gilded Age America to fight for civil rights and economic freedom: Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan. They say that history is written by the victors. But not in the case of the most famous dissenter on the Supreme Court. Almost a century after his death, John Marshall Harlan's words helped end segregation and gave us our civil rights and our modern economic freedom. But his legacy would not have been possible without the courage of Robert Harlan, a slave who John's father raised like a son in the same household. After the Civil War, Robert emerges as a political leader. With Black people holding power in the Republican Party, it is Robert who helps John land his appointment to the Supreme Court. At first, John is awed by his fellow justices, but the country is changing. Northern whites are prepared to take away black rights to appease the South. Giant trusts are monopolizing entire industries. Against this onslaught, the Supreme Court seemed all too willing to strip away civil rights and invalidate labor protections. So as case after case comes before the court, challenging his core values, John makes a fateful decision: He breaks with his colleagues in fundamental ways, becoming the nation's prime defender of the rights of Black people, immigrant laborers, and people in distant lands occupied by the US. Harlan's dissents, particularly in Plessy v. Ferguson, were widely read and a source of hope for decades. Thurgood Marshall called Harlan's Plessy dissent his "Bible"--and his legal roadmap to overturning segregation. In the end, Harlan's words built the foundations for the legal revolutions of the New Deal and Civil Rights eras. Spanning from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement and beyond, The Great Dissenter is a "magnificent" (Douglas Brinkley) and "thoroughly researched" (The New York Times) rendering of the American legal system's most significant failures and most inspiring successes.

Renowned for making films that are at once sly domestic satires and heartbreaking 'social realist' dramas, British writer-director Mike Leigh confronts his viewers with an un-romanticized dramatization of modern-day society in the hopes of inspiring them to strive for greater self-awareness and compassion for others. This collection features new, interdisciplinary essays that cover all phases of the BAFTA-award-winner’s film career, from his early made-for-television film work to his theatrical releases, including Life is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Career Girls (1997), Topsy-Turvy (1999), All or Nothing (2002), Vera Drake (2004), Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) and Another Year (2010).With contributions from international scholars from a variety of fields, the essays in this collection cover individual films and the recurring themes and motifs in several films, such as representations of class and gender, and overt social commentary and political subtexts. Also covered are Leigh's visual stylizations and storytelling techniques ranging from explorations of the costume design to set design to the music and camerawork and editing; the collaborative process of ‘devising and directing’ a Mike Leigh film that involves character-building, world-construction, plotting, improvisations and script-writing; the process of funding and marketing for these seemingly 'uncommercial' projects, and a survey of Leigh’s critical reception and the existing writing on his work.

This book collects and integrates the results of an extensive research program conducted by the authors over the past two decades. It spans the disciplines of transportation science, operations management, and behavioral economics, and consists of 16 chapters previously published in peer-reviewed academic journals and grouped under three topical sections: queueing, route choice, and departure time. The book focuses on strategic interactions in directed networks and laboratory experiments carefully designed to test the descriptive validity of the underlying theoretical models. The research question that unifies the chapters is: do the conclusions of theoretical literature account for the decisions of network users in controlled laboratory experiments? With several major qualifications, this book answers this question affirmatively.

This book introduces the reader to Robert Govett (1813-1901), dissenting clergyman and author, who wrote as a scholar of biblical prophecy, primarily on the subject of the ""exclusion"" of believers in the Millennial Kingdom, an idea of which he conceived. The purpose of the book is threefold: (1) to describe Govett, his life, and his printed work; (2) to analyze Govett's eschatological beliefs, especially those he originated; and (3) to investigate why a respected theologian in England, who had published over 180 books and tracts, disappeared from dissenting print culture early in the twentieth century. Govett's doctrine of exclusion was heavily intertwined with most of his writings. It was a topic that he developed throughout his career. Yet, as the center of dispensationalism shifted to America, Govett's views of the Rapture began to be seen as extreme. The book explains why Govett was eclipsed as the center of the evangelical movement shifted and its theology ossified. Since his death, Govett has been occasionally remembered in scholarship, but with increasing inaccuracies and skepticism. This book seeks to remove the mystery. ""In its careful analysis of the writings of Robert Govett, this book uncovers the variety of early dispensationalism, reconstructs the crises in the formation of its eschatology, and uncovers the mechanisms by which evangelical reputations could be made and just as quickly forgotten. David Seip's new work offers important new insights into the debates out of which emerged the most widespread eschatological system in global Christianity."" --Crawford Gribben, Queen's University Belfast ""This fascinating study performs a celebratory act of theological archaeology, bringing an important but almost completely forgotten figure in Victorian religious history back into consideration. Given Robert Govett's enormous output, and the importance to the cultural historian of recovering and understanding ideas and arguments which lost the historical battle, it is of no small significance that Seip has provided us with a sense of the theological and intellectual struggles of this figure which helps fill in a gap in our understanding of a very fascinating period."" --Jarlath Killeen, Trinity College Dublin ""The real strength of this book is the prodigious archival research that underpins the account of Govett's life. Seip's judicious use of manuscript and primary sources is truly impressive. This study is a rich scholarly account that convinces us of Govett's relevance to Victorian dissent."" --David O'Shaughnessy, Trinity College Dublin David E. Seip received his PhD from Trinity College in Dublin. He is the Senior Pastor of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.

Advancing Self-Directed Learning in Higher Education
Self-directed learning (SDL) is considered a core concept in problem-based learning (PBL) and student-centered learning. More importantly, the current face-to-face model of curriculum implementation faces many challenges that seem to question its dominance over other models. The violent nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has again vindicated SDL practitioners and research enthusiasts to continue seeking solutions that will enhance skills to cope in a rapidly changing technological, globalized world. However, the higher education sector is challenged when promoting SDL due to a slow pace of digital integration since the education system is not fully transformed. This has necessitated an urgent need for global discourse on how universities globally are implementing SDL strategies to enhance the quality of curriculum delivery.Advancing Self-Directed Learning in Higher Education provides insight into various strategic approaches that could be adopted for the successful implementation of SDL in higher education. It is written for professionals who want to improve their understanding of how to improve student teaching and learning and the quality of curriculum implementation in higher education. In this realm, this book provides ideas to its readers about the approaches pertaining to strategy and innovative measures, practical implementations, and tools in the field of curriculum and SDL. Covering topics such as educational technology, intentional education practice theory, and student experience, this premier reference source is an essential resource for teachers, policymakers, lecturers, research scholars, students of higher education, administrators, librarians, academicians, and researchers.
