"From childhood, I loved the name Lilly which seems so rhythmic and musical. My grandmother was called Molly Lilly Bell by her friends." Lilly Ladybug combines folk literature characteristics using refrain and repetition. The book teaches manners, thoughtfulness, number patterns, colors, and life cycle change. The book was designed to make children want to participate in the reading process by repeating familiar patterns and phrases.Children love Dr. Richardson's books because they are about growing up and experiencing developmental changes. The life-cycle transformation of two of her books Little Lilly Ladybug and The Teeny Tiny Tadpole occurs as the main characters meet others to learn about themselves on journeys of change and insight."Children love to use their imagination and experience suspense waiting for the ending. The ending teaches a good moral like those found in fables. The book was written for children who are learning to read and transitioning to independent readers. The book was written to be used by parents and early childhood educators to help children and students learn to think as the story is being read. Grandparents love reading her books to their grandchildren.

The book, Teaching Your Child to Read Naturally, provides parents and educators of young children with strategies for interactively reading. This book is designed for adults who want to make a commitment to support children's learning, thinking, and understanding of reading. Interactive reading can be a catalyst as ED, the cat in the book, introduces parents and educators how to make books come alive by using thinking, listening, and talking strategies to promote reading. ED's suggestions will help adults create a positive association toward reading as children participate in the magic of story time and the reading of bedtime stories together. This book evolved from a nationally recognized Reading Discovery Tutor Training program featured in the U.S. Department of Education's document So That Every Child Can Read...America Reads Community and Tutoring Projects. Dr. Richardson is developing the program, Reading: The Family Adventure. Her interest in emergent literacy and children's literature provided the motivation to the write this book and publish The Teeny Tiny Tadpole, Little Lilly Ladybug, and Birds Being Birds using folk tale elements and characteristics. These books are classics to be savored and shared for generations. The collection of four books are a must for any library.

Discovering Effective Reading InstructionA Reading Instructional Playbook
"Dr. Smith's book, Discovering Effective Reading Instruction, is a true discovery. He easily explains the reading process and offers solutions and resources that are ready to implement in any classroom. He breaks the reading process down into a step-by-step process that is easy to follow and understand. It takes differentiated reading instruction to the next level as it shows how to find what skills students are missing, how to fill the holes, and move them on to the next level. He takes the hard task of small group instruction and simplifies how to implement it and do it well. This should be in the hands of every classroom teacher as it takes away the teacher guessing and gives them the tools to help every student meet or exceed grade level reading goals." Dawn Kennison-Kerrigan, Instructional Coach "The ideas in Discovering Effective Reading Instruction are easy to apply. It is a great resource for veteran teachers and new teachers alike. I have seen firsthand how a scientific approach to reading builds a strong foundation for all readers but especially those with learning disabilities. Every elementary teacher needs this book " - Ashley Nicodemus, Kindergarten Teacher and Language Specialist "Discovering Effective Reading Instruction covers so many important reading topics in a way that any teacher (novice or seasoned) should be aware of. Dr. Smith reminds us that reading is not a natural brain function, and simplifies many of the more complex reading skills. He emphasizes the importance of phonological/phonemic awareness as a foundation for later reading instruction, as well as touching on topics such as dyslexia and small-group instruction. The book reads with the tone of a mentor sharing information on the importance of reading instruction." Michelle Raible, Title I Teacher Author website

The Heart of the Matter: Five ESL Leaders and the Impact They've Had: Featuring Krashen, O'Neill, Vanpatten, Gregory, and Hopkins
There is an argument to be made that the five individuals featured in this collection personify the very essence of what it means to be a language teacher in the 21st century because of the profound effects their words and actions have had on so many teachers and so many careers in the field of ESL. All of the essays in this book were originally published on web pages in the ESL MiniConference Online newsletter. Steve Krashen, the late Robert O'Neill, and Bill VanPatten debated the nature of the language learning or language acquisition process in a series of exchanges that was instigated by O'Neill, who suggested to ESL MiniConference founding editor Robb Scott that he invite Krashen to respond to statements in which O'Neill challenged the validity of the "natural approach" that Tracy Terrell and Krashen had developed and Krashen had spent a lifetime popularizing. The bait was taken and the resulting exchanges were revealing, to say the least. At one point, Bill VanPatten served as a tag-teammate for Krashen and wrote a truly eloquent defense of unconscious acquisition with a powerful flying metaphor, accentuating significant updates to the Krashen/Terrell model, only to encounter yet further resistance from O'Neill, who drove home his points with obvious feisty pleasure. That memorable debate is just as relevant and thought-provoking today as it was in 2002. Joining Krashen, O'Neill, and VanPatten in the pantheon of ESL/EFL and second language teaching legends are O. Dean Gregory and David B. Hopkins, whose careers in teacher training are feted in two spectacular festschrifts with heart-felt essays from their students and colleagues. Gregory passed away in the year 2000 after a lifetime devoted to ESL program development and university teaching; Hopkins has spent more than five decades doing program development and teacher training overseas, and is still going strong. A close reading of the "Great Debate" and these two festschrifts -- previously only available online -- will give the reader entry into the philosophical and pedagogical concerns that are at the core of this exciting field of second language learning and teaching.

Tales of a Displaced Worker: A Practical Guide for Student Affairs Professionals Dealing with Institutional Closure
I really hope you didn't just get the news that your college is about to close. That kind of news isn't easy to face. I know this from personal experience. Over the past year I have watched and heard about more colleges announcing they will close in the very immediate future. I remember the first thing I did was go on the Internet and look for anything related to surviving a college closing. Much was written about the students, nearly nothing was written for the student affairs staff that works at these institutions.I knew I wasn't alone, and even now I hear about other people who have gone through this experience in the past. But the future of higher education is changing and we need to be prepared with more skills than stories. Forecasts of higher education feasibility have stated that more and more smaller colleges will face closure in the new few decades, as they adapt to the new markets and rising and declining birth rates across the country. While I was working at one of the colleges that closed in 2018, by no means will it be the last one. Since the closure of my own institution, three more colleges in the region have announced closure and more possible closures loom on the horizon. We will need to be prepared as colleagues to provide support and as educators to face the possibility that our institution isn't as safe from closure as we might be led to believe. I am going to focus on my journey from the time of the announcement and what I wish I had been advised to do in the weeks leading to and the weeks and months immediately following the closure. I plan to speak of the staff that were and continue to be an inspiration for values-centered leadership. And this book will provide practical ways to deal with the closure, from how to continue to be part of your professional community to dealing with the job-loss grief that you may experience. Table of ContentsChapter One: The Kids Will Be Alright: Having implicit permission to focus on your professional work & learning to breatheChapter Two: Review your resume and other immediate job search needsChapter Three: Prepare for awkward and invasive questions, and finding job in the job searchChapter Four: Develop answers to the "where do you work" questions and other personal, triggering questions at professional eventsChapter Five: Give yourself permission to grieveChapter Six: Maintain your TribeChapter Seven: You are Going to Be AlrightChapter Eight: The Unfinished Tale of a Displaced Worker
