The Will to Win: A Biography of Ferdinand Eberstadt

The Will to Win: A Biography of Ferdinand Eberstadt

Robert C. Perez; Edward F. Willett

Praeger Publishers Inc
1989

Ferdinand Eberstadt, the man whose war production strategy was credited with shortening World War II by one full year, was America's financier extraordinaire. His contributions over a period of nearly fifty years helped to shape the world of business and finance as we know it today. In this lively analytical biography, Perez and Willett chronicle Eberstadt's career in the public and private sectors and explore the motives, methods, and personal style that were responsible for his successes as well as his failures. This balanced, clearly written account is packed with information and insight on both Eberstadt's career and the radical changes we have witnessed since the 1920s. Perez once worked for Eberstadt and knew at first-hand what a tyrant he was. Nevertheless, he conceived this biography as an exercise in hero worship. Despite this, it has turned out to be an objective study, and an invaluable mine of reference material. All Wall Streeters motivated to survive the next crunch will do well to arm themselves with this digest of the Eberstadt saga. Its scenario casts Eberstadt in twin roles: as the shrewdest proprietor of a Wall Street profit center during the market's ups and downs between the 1920s and 1960s; and as the most effective troubleshooter brought to Washington during the war years. Again and again, his genius for diagnosing the cause of a crisis enabled him to turn it into an opportunity--for himself, then for the country. Eliot Janeway, in Barrons, June 4, 1990 Ferdinand Eberstadt, the man whose war production strategy was credited with shortening World War II by one full year, was America's financier extraordinaire. The foremost American expert on German finance during the 1920s, Eberstadt achieved recognition as a financial negotiator at the Paris Reparations Conference in 1929. As an investment banker, he was instrumental in helping to restore confidence in the business community following the stock market crash, through his support of small, depressed blue chip firms. The performance of Eberstadt's trendsetting Chemical Fund, founded in 1938, led to the popularization of mutual fund investing in the 1950s and 1960s. Through a series of private capital deals involving chemical and pharmaceutical companies, Eberstadt and his partner strengthened those industries and in the process developed the leveraged buyout technique--a bold innovation that has achieved major importance in modern corporate financial strategy. This balanced, clearly written account is packed with information and insight on both Eberstadt's career and the radical changes we have witnessed since the 1920s. It will be of interest to a broad readership in business, finance, investment, government, and twentieth-century American history.

Listening to the Parables of Jesus

Listening to the Parables of Jesus

Polebridge Press

"What if the purpose or function of a parable is not to instruct but to haunt?" So begins Listening to the Parables of Jesus, edited by Edward F. Beutner, who suggests that, from time to time, even scholars scratch their heads in puzzlement over the yin and yang of Jesus' parables. This concise, well-edited book brings together insights from world-renowned scholars into the interpretation of parables. Lane McGaughy's opening essay provides high fidelity earphones that let readers hear the vivid and distinctive nature of the language of parable. Robert Miller offers an original treatment of two parables from the gospels of Matthew and Thomas, parables that he renames, "The Overpriced Pearl" and "The Treasure of Immorality." With his eye for narrative structure, film Director Paul Verhoeven identifies fault lines in Matthew's version of the Vineyard Laborers and proposes an alternative version in which the first will be first. In his essay on the Leased Vineyard, Brandon Scott demonstrates how rabbinic parables can illuminate the otherwise shadowy nooks and crannies of a dark parable of violence found in Mark's gospel. The final three essays describe the parables globally as artful language events as fulcrums, so to speak, upon which our understanding of the world gets overturned and undermined. According to Robert Funk, Jesus parables are a knothole in the cosmic fence through which we glimpse the world as Jesus saw it. In Listening to the Parables of Jesus, leading scholars of the parables help readers find the knothole. The rest is up to them.

Advanced routine imaging techniques have made it possible to diagnose localized abnormalities often before they have produced irreversible damage. PET permits visualization of the metabolic or physiologic characteristics of tumors. MRI shows exclusive morphologic abnormalities, and functional MRI depicts the motor and sensory status in the vicinity of tumors. MRS offers biochemical information of tumors and surrounding normal tissues. Combining PET, MRI and MRS information we should be able to differentiate tumors from non-tumor lesions, to characterize types or grades of tumors, and to monitor tumor regression, recurrence or response to therapy. This book reports updated techniques, instrumentation and clinical application of PET, MRI and MRS in cancer management.

Originally published in 1987, the purpose of Stress, Crowding, and Blood Pressure in Prison was to present, in a single location, the rationale, background, methods, principal results, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions of the authors’ studies at Massachusetts correctional institutions. Employing a longitudinal method for studying 568 inmates, the authors drew on psychological, social and health sciences assessments to identify the effects of housing mode, prison employment, leisure activities, disciplinary actions, and personal and sociodemographic characteristics to identify what was particularly stressful for inmates. A parallel study of prison staff and a specific series of conclusions and recommendations concludes the book.
