Children's Literature Legacy Award WinnerAn extraordinary picture book from Newbery Honoree Pam Mu oz Ryan and Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick about two heroines, national treasures, and close friends, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt were birds of a feather. Not only were they two of the most admired and respected women of all time, they were also good friends. Illuminated here for the first time in picture book form is the true story of a thrilling night when they made history together On a brisk and cloudless evening in April 1933, Amelia and Eleanor did the unprecedented: They stole away from a White House dinner, commandeered an Eastern Air Transport jet, and took off on a glorious adventure--while still dressed in their glamorous evening gowns This picture book tour de force celebrates the pioneering spirit of two friends whose passion for life gave them the courage to defy convention in the name of fulfillment, conviction, and fun. Soaring text, inspired by the known facts of this event, and breathtaking drawings ask readers to dream dreams as big as Amelia and Eleanor's.

Faithful: The Robert and Eleanor Palmer Story chronicles the Palmers' early roots as children from the Midwest during The Great Depression. It follows their journey to Bible College at Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri where the authors met and would later marry, to serving as assistant pastors in St. Louis and starting a family with the birth of their son, Paul. Faithful then describes the details that led them to be senior pastors in Dunn, North Carolina where there family grew to be a family of four with the birth of their daughter, Phyllis. We then find them relocating to a church in Lee's Summit, Missouri which they also helped to build as well as pastor. All throughout the book there is the theme of service and faithfulness. Eleanor was right there with Bob, lifting up his ministry with her own ministry of music, whether it be playing the organ or the piano or the accordian or leading the choir. There were other calls to churches in the Midwest until the Palmers ultimately received the call to go West, where they have been for the past 37 years at two different churches. With each move to each new city and church, whether it was for 5 years or 11 years or more, The Palmers always listened to the still small voice within and were guided by their God.This book exemplifies steadfastness, trust and faithfulness. The underlying story of being faithful to the purpose to which God had called them is a true testimony of the Palmers' lives. Faithful also describes their lives after pastoring in the pulpit and how they helped be "pastors to pastors" to hundreds of ministers. The book also delves into their work in overseas missions and contains an informative history of the Assemblies of God.
Iraq and Eleanor Egan's The War in the Cradle of the World
Chronicling the British military's invasion of Iraq in 1917, Eleanor Franklin Egan was an intrepid American journalist whose autobiographical account of her time spent amongst British officers describes the relationship between British and American forces in the Middle East during and just after World War I. Egan's account of military life and the actions taken by British officers to secure the British Empire's position in the Middle East is particularly striking, as readers begin to see the parallels between the early twentieth century British presence there and the current American presence in Iraq. This book should be read by all those interested in understanding the ways in which the modern Middle East has adapted as a result of invasion and imperialism. With a new critical introduction that explores the choices made by the United States that have led them to inherit the United Kingdom's position in the Gulf, Paul J. Rich offers an analysis of Egan's work that will allow contemporary readers to see that what is going on in Iraq now is nothing new.

Tell Her Story: Eleanor Bumpurs & the Police Killing That Galvanized New York City
The life and 1984 murder of a beloved Black grandmother that changed community activism forever--and sparked the ongoing movement against racist policing and brutality #SayHerName: The story of Eleanor Bumpurs, told for the first time by decorated historian and Bumpurs's former neighbor LaShawn Harris On October 29, 1984, 66-year-old beloved Black disabled grandmother Eleanor Bumpurs was murdered in her own home. A public housing tenant 4 months behind on rent, Ms. Bumpurs was facing eviction when white NYPD officer Stephen Sullivan shot her twice with a 12-gauge shotgun. LaShawn Harris, 10 years old at the time, felt the aftershocks of the tragedy in her community well beyond the four walls of her home across the street. Now an award-winning historian, Harris uses eyewitness accounts, legal documents, civil rights pamphlets, and more to look through the lens of her childhood neighbor's life and death. She renders in a new light the history of anti-Black police violence and of the watershed anti-policing movement Eleanor Bumpurs's murder birthed. So many Black women's lives have been stolen since--Deborah Danner, Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, Sonya Massey--and still more are on the line. This deeply researched, intimate portrait of Eleanor Bumpurs's life and legacy highlights how one Black grandmother's brutal police murder galvanized an entire city. It also shows how possible and critical it is to stand together against racist policing now.

Born in the late 1800s to one of the wealthiest families in New York City, Eleanor Roosevelt seemed destined for a traditional woman’s role within a sedate Victorian life. Instead, she married her fifth cousin and was flung into the highest levels of American politics, culminating in Franklin’s unprecedented four-term presidency. While previous first ladies refrained from public discussion of their personal views, Eleanor’s bold opinions on political, social, and racial issues took many by surprise. She held press conferences and wrote a syndicated column. She spoke at national conventions, granted interviews, and often made appearances on her husband’s behalf. Her own influence lasted years beyond his death. She advocated for human rights, worked with the United Nations, and supported what later became the civil rights movement. The fascinating quotes in this collection are the words of an articulate, honest, and thoughtful woman. Of war, she said, “I hope the day will come when all that inventing and mechanical genius will be used for other purposes.” At a time when racism prevailed, Eleanor said, “We must be proud of every one of our citizens, for regardless of nationality, or race, every one contributes to the welfare and culture of the nation.”Organized by topic—government, money, art, education, class, relationships, emotions—these quotations reveal the personal thoughts Roosevelt shared in letters and conversations alongside the strong opinions she expressed in speeches and interviews, giving evidence to her character and her beliefs. Her words continue to resonate today.

This book focuses on the men of the convict transport Eleanor who arrived in NSW in 1831. They were all from the counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire and were transported for their part in the Swing riots - the great agricultural uprising of 1830-31. This episode which touched thirty counties and has been called 'the last peasants' revolt' led to more than 480 people being sent to Australia ('the largest single group in the history of transportation' (George Rude). The men on the Eleanor who made up 30% of the Swing transportees. Part I of the book deals with the men of the Eleanor in their English setting, Part II with their experiences as convicts and free men in New South Wales. The chapter headings below give a clear indication of the contents of each chapter and the focus of the book on ruined and then reconstructed lives Written with full academic apparatus but with that elusive being the general reader in mind, this theme will appeal to that large readership in England which is interested in rural social history and popular protest. In Australia there is a large and enthusiatic readership for books on colonial history, convictism and works which provide a context for family history. This book also has the advantage of being focussed on Hardy's Wessex and is thus, to some extent, a contribution to the regional history of southern England. The Swing Riots are a topic which features in the history syllabuses of most examination boards in southern England.

The Household Roll of Eleanor de Montfort, Countess of Leicester and Pembroke, 1265
Edition with English translation of a document shedding huge light on one of the most important figures of her time. The household roll of Eleanor, countess of Leicester and Pembroke, offers a fascinating insight into one of the most important domestic establishments in England during the Second Barons' War of 1263-7. As the wife of Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester, the leading figure within the baronial regime, and the sister and aunt of King Henry III and the Lord Edward, respectively, Countess Eleanor occupied a position at the heart of English political affairs up to, and after, her husband's death at the Battle of Evesham on 4 August 1265. This volume is a critical edition of the extant thirteen membranes of Countess Eleanor's household account roll for that momentous year, 1265 (British Library, Additional MS 8877). Presented here in the original Latin and with an accompanying English translation, Countess Eleanor's roll includes her diet account for the period from 19 February to 29 August 1265, listing her visitors and the different items of food and drink consumed on each day at each castle at which she was resident, including Wallingford, Odiham and Dover. The roll also incorporates a "wardrobe journal", covering the period up until 1 October 1265, detailing expenditure on the purchase and repair of household furnishings, goods and utensils, on clothing and wages, on the Montfortian war effort in the South, and on messengers travelling to and from the countess, Earl Simon, her sons and associates, in the months before and after the Battle of Evesham.
