In this current environment, it is urgent to understand how oppression and health are closely connected. Oppression: A Social Determinant of Health offers a thorough and accessible overview of the root or structural causes of ill health, such as capitalism, globalization, colonialism, medicalization and neoliberalism. The contributors to this volume insist that the key to tackling these structural forces is understanding and changing oppressive practices that cause ill health, thus reframing growing health inequities within the scope of moral responsibility and social change. This thoroughly updated second edition contains contributions from internationally recognized experts in the field of critical social science analyses in health systems and health sciences studies. New chapters provide timely discussions about oppression, Treaty Rights, Big Pharma, the Anthropocene and the COVID-19 pandemic. This book provides a comprehensive overview of core ideas for investigating how oppression "gets under the skin" to perpetuate health inequities.

'The book is user-friendly and includes clear diagrams in each section, along with tables to outline key points. I found these very useful and they are an easy reference/ reminder, for example, they include a normal development chart, what assessments are available and their main aims.' - National Association of Paediatric Occupational Therapists When a child has a developmental delay affecting motor coordination and development the ramifications are far reaching, from the daily tasks of dressing and brushing your teeth, to learning to write and participating in sports. How to Help a Clumsy Child is a practical resource manual and 'how to help' book for parents of, or professionals working with, young children with motor coordination developmental delays. It covers a range of topics, including recognizing normal and abnormal motor development, when and how to seek help, an overview of approaches used to help the clumsy child, and specific teaching strategies appropriate for both parents and professional caregivers. Rather than focusing upon one specific frame of reference, Lisa Kurtz offers a diverse range of ways to manage motor coordination and development problems, and also discusses the controversial nature of therapy for these children. Multiple tables and lists serve as quick reference guides and the three appendices include extensive further reading and an invaluable contacts list, making this an essential resource for anyone caring for, or working with, children with developmental motor concerns.

The Dozier School for Boys: Forensics, Survivors, and a Painful Past

From the outside, the Dozier School for Boys in Florida looked utterly charming. Carefully manicured lawns and attractive plantings adorned walkways and drives. But the reality of life at Dozier was ugly. In 2008, almost one hundred years after the reform school's founding, Robert Straley and Roger Dean Kiser discovered they shared similar abusive experiences while students at Dozier. They recalled vicious punishments at a campus building called the white house, where staff used a leather strap to beat inmates. Straley was also raped at Dozier. In their shared grief and trauma, the two men reached out to filmmaker and civil rights activist Michael O'McCarthy. He too had experienced abuse at Dozier. He contacted Miami Herald journalist Carol Marbin Miller to tell their story. As the details went public, investigations into Dozier began. The State of Florida finally closed the school in 2011 and officially apologized to survivors in 2017. A forensic investigation took place on the campus, including digging up its cemetery, since it was alleged that some boys had been killed at the school. Thus far, forensic anthropologist Dr. Erin Kimmerle and her team from the University of South Florida have uncovered over fifty sets of human remains. Yet none of the investigative or scientific work could prove any of the allegations. No perpetrators could be brought to justice. In the end, survivors and their families must live with the knowledge that justice may never be served. Follow this story of institutional abuse, the brave survivors who spoke their truth, and the scientists and others who brought it to light.
