By: Alexander S. Salley, Jr., Orig. Pub. 1919, reprinted 2020, 296 pages, soft cover, Index, 0-89308-295-3.St. Helena;s parish was established in 1712 by the General Assembly of South Carolina. It was bounded on the east by St. Helena's sound and the Combahee River on the north by a line from the head of the Combahee River to the Savannah River and on the south to the ocean. Early parish vestry minutes are extremely important as often times they contain lists of voters, care of widows, orphans and the poor, and apprenticeships for all persons of the parish, which include not only members of the church. These records are very important since they are the only existing records for Beaufort District after 1785.
"History Of The Captivity Of Napoleon At St. Helena, Volume 1" offers a compelling firsthand account of Napoleon Bonaparte's final years in exile. Authored by Charles-Tristan Montholon, a close confidant who accompanied the former Emperor to Saint Helena, this volume provides intimate details of Napoleon's daily life, his thoughts, and his interactions with his entourage. Montholon's narrative sheds light on the conditions of Napoleon's captivity, the political intrigues surrounding him, and his reflections on his illustrious career. This historical record offers invaluable insights into one of history's most significant figures during his period of forced isolation. Readers gain a deeper understanding of Napoleon's character, his enduring ambitions, and the circumstances that shaped his final years. A must-read for anyone interested in Napoleonic history, military strategy, and biographical accounts of great leaders.
